Teaching Your Dog to Allow Head Patting

Do you have a dog who dislikes being touched or patted on top of the head? Do you wonder why this might be or how to change this behavior? Body language could be telling you the dog is timid or shy.

Why do humans want to pat a dog on the head:

• the dog's head is usually the closest part for a human to reach
• humans see other humans patting dogs on the head

Be careful if you pat a dog on the head. A lot of dogs actually do not enjoy this even if they are not in general timid or shy. Dogs do not seem to like something reaching down from above toward them, perhaps it is something dangerous they might think. And if your dog experiences pain during head pats, it won't be long until they will duck from the oncoming occurrence of pain. It can become annoying if the dog shies away from you putting a leash on him for fear of pats on the head.

Here are some things you can do to prevent head shyness:

• do not allow strangers to pat your dog on the head
• ask strangers kindly to pet your dog on their chest, chin or back
• if not possible to ask strangers to pet your dog on chest, chin or back, try turning your dog to face you by rewarding him with a treat every time you call his name and the dog turns to check in with you so strangers will be forced to pat your dog on his back or chest
• teach your dog head pats are good by using a clicker to click and then immediately treat whenever you reach toward your dog, you can also use a cue word instead of a clicker
• if your dog is extremely head shy and you are unable to change the behavior with simple training techniques check with your vet for his recommendations especially if the dog is in senior years as these dogs may be developing arthritis or old age related aches and pains
• spend five minutes per day conditioning your dog to enjoy a hand reaching toward his head, give treats when dog allows the reaching

The goal is to have a dog who is happy to have you "reach" for him and perhaps even come running toward your outstretched hand, and allow head patting. To condition or train your dog to accept you reaching toward him could be another life saver in cases of dog running out of your reach into danger.
