The Brittany dogs are unique sporting dogs. They are smaller than setters, have longer legs than the spaniels and stand about 20 inches at the shoulder. They are known best for their boldly patterned coat.


Their colors are combinations of white and vivid orange and liver (reddish-brown). The Brittany dogs are rugged and strong, muscular, smooth, clean and quick on their feet. Bird dog lovers love their faces because of the soft expression their faces convey. Their high-set ears send a message of being eager.

The Briard is a Handsome and Muscular Frenchman

They have a wavy coat that comes in colors of gray, tawny or black with an impressive head topped by a peek-a-boo hairdo that parts naturally in the middle of their head. Briard dog breed fans describe them as having a frank and questioning look due to the luxurious beard and eyebrows. The males stand between 22 and 27 inches at the shoulder and as usual a female stands a few inches shorter.


The Briard move with a nimble-footed gait. They are burly and rugged. Some say their dashing looks convey an aura of Gallic romance and elegance. This dog is a very old French working dog used in earlier times to defend against wolves and poachers. With the dividing up of the land in France and the increase in population that followed the French Revolution they gradually transformed their work into the more peaceful tasks of herding the flocks, keeping the sheep within the un-fenced boundaries of pastures and guarding their master's property. These dogs should make excellent guard dogs for a family, farmland or ranch.

In a family unit the Briard becomes very sensitive to his family's feelings. They make excellent family pets if  time and effort is put into training him properly. Be serious about his socialization and education beginning in the very early stages of puppy-hood. Attend ongoing training classes with the puppy right from the start.

He or she will require more exercise than just walks on a lead. A fenced in yard will be imperative. If you don't have a fenced in yard, you will need to find a safe place where he or she can run and exercise to promote his physical and mental well-being.

The Braque Francais Pyrenean Dog From France and Spain

He is a fairly large dog weighing 40 to 55 pounds with a soft short coat. The Braque Francais Pyrenean first role was to hunt in the very rugged, arid Pyreness Mountains on the border of France and Spain. the American Kennel Club has him assigned to the Sporting group of dogs. His history goes back hundreds of years. The Braque Francais Pyrenean dogs are considered to be common ancestor to all of today's short haired pointing breeds. The Braque Francais Pyrenean are hunting dogs from a very old type of the gun dog used for pointing the location of game birds for the hunger. They are seen a lot as popular hunting dogs in France.

These dogs are not just pointers, they are versatile hunting dogs that can retrieve, flush and trail game in all sorts of terrain. They are quick and can move fast without sprinting.

They are medium to large sized dogs with long legs and long drop ears. Their coat is sometimes chestnut brown or white speckled with brown often appearing with one or more large brown spots. The head is usually brown. Very interesting looking dog with an exact purpose for being with us. I guess you call him a "bird dog."

The Braque du Bourbonnais is an Ancient Breed

He is considered one of the most ancient pointers of the pointing breeds developed in France during the 15th century and coming to the United States in 1988. From the beginning, the Braque du Bourbonnais has been known for its keen hunting instincts. It is felt they originated from the ancient Spanish pointer. Each breed of pointers in France is named for the region in which they were developed. He has a calm and gentle demeanor and is ideally suited for the foot hunter. The Classic and Ancient Pointer, The Bracco Italiano Dog

Mainly in the northern regions of the peninsula the Bracco Italiano is known as one of the classic and ancient pointer dogs. This breed had been present since the middle age and became widespread in the Renaissance period.


The Bracco Italiano dogs were held in very high regard by nobility and royal families during the Renaissance period of time in Italy. They were bred by the Gonzaga and Medici families. The puppies born into their kennels were sought out by nobles and royal families. Today, they are assigned to the American Kennel Club Sporting Group.

Italian hunters originally bred the Bracco Italiano dogs to drive game into nets. When the gun was invented, the role of these dogs developed into that of the modern day.

Interesting is that the Bracco Italiano as a hunter of game would cover ground in an elongated flowing trot while holding his nose up to the wind scenting for game. This is absolutely fascinating to me. (source: American Kennel Club)
