Teaching Your Dog to Allow Head Patting

Do you have a dog who dislikes being touched or patted on top of the head? Do you wonder why this might be or how to change this behavior? Body language could be telling you the dog is timid or shy.
Why do humans want to pat a dog on the head:
  • the dog's head is usually the closest part for a human to reach
  • humans see other humans patting dogs on the head
Be careful if you pat a dog on the head. A lot of dogs actually do not enjoy this even if they are not in general timid or shy. Dogs do not seem to like something reaching down from above toward them, perhaps it is something dangerous they might think. And if your dog experiences pain during head pats, it won't be long until they will duck from the oncoming occurrence of pain. It can become annoying if the dog shies away from you putting a leash on him for fear of pats on the head.

Here are some things you can do to prevent head shyness:
  • do not allow strangers to pat your dog on the head
  • ask strangers kindly to pet your dog on their chest, chin or back
  • if not possible to ask strangers to pet your dog on chest, chin or back, try turning your dog to face you by rewarding him with a treat every time you call his name and the dog turns to check in with you so strangers will be forced to pat your dog on his back or chest
  • teach your dog head pats are good by using a clicker to click and then immediately treat whenever you reach toward your dog, you can also use a cue word instead of a clicker
  • if your dog is extremely head shy and you are unable to change the behavior with simple training techniques check with your vet for his recommendations especially if the dog is in senior years as these dogs may be developing arthritis or old age related aches and pains
  • spend five minutes per day conditioning your dog to enjoy a hand reaching toward his head, give treats when dog allows the reaching
The goal is to have a dog who is happy to have you "reach" for him and perhaps even come running toward your outstretched hand, and allow head patting. To condition or train your dog to accept you reaching toward him could be another life saver in cases of dog running out of your reach into danger.

Reading Dog Body Language

Like humans, dogs communicate with us using body language. In this article read about some of the things your dog might be saying to you through body language.
Relaxation expression: When dogs are expressing relaxation you might see them get up, stretch, and readily come to you.
Happy, laughing or joyful expression: Dog sticks the tongue out. A tongue out like the above picture can also convey "a great big smile," "everything is just peachy keen."
Excitement expression: An excited dog is likely to wag his tail in a fast, back-and-forth manner. His head sometimes is held up high, ears forward, mouth might be slightly open and you will see some extra sparkle in his eyes.
Playful expression: The dog might dance or jump up and down with eyes focused upon the object he wants to play with. If the object is you, the dog might be saying: "Please play with me now or please pet me now or come over here." The dog might bring you a toy. Dogs have been known to get their leash and take it to their owner saying, "let's go for a walk right now."
Dogs who are in general playful are also usually easy to train. You will be able to take advantage of his playful, happy attitude to teach basic manners like sitting or come here upon command.
Shy expression: A shy dog is one who usually is wary or unsure of new people or circumstances. They might even tuck their tail between their hind legs. If there are other dogs around them, the shy dog might use them to hide from strangers. A shy dog's tail might move slowly, never fast and furious as he or she is not quite sure what is going on in the environment and should they be cautious or what. A shy dog uses a lot of caution before approaching people or new circumstances. Their head might look as if they are trying to hide it below the level of their backs like a person might hide their head underneath a tall sweater collar to sort of escape the current situation. A dog showing shyness might have eyes a bit diverted. It is like, "I don't know if I want to get to know you or not," and give me a little time, I might let you know me." A shy dog might not even accept a tasty treat. They might bark when people approach them because they are a bit fearful.
Fearful expression: A fearful dog might hide in a kennel or somewhere in the house, under the furniture, under the bed. Fearful dogs sometimes will go to extreme lengths to avoid human contact. This happens a lot with dogs retrieved from shelters rather than reputable breeders. If a fearful dog cannot get away from humans or other dogs, he might just lie down as far away from you and other dogs as possible. The eyes might seem to protrude or be dilated in fear. An extremely fearful dog sometimes will not even look at a human. A fearful dog is more inclined to attack.
Each dog has a unique personality of its own. Take time to get to know your dogs for a happier life with them.

Potty Training Using Pads

Potty training your new puppy should be on day one in the new home. You need to decide just how you will accomplish this very important task. Will  you potty train directly to an outside spot or will you start inside on potty pads? Your dog going outside is the ideal solution, however, potty pads can play a significant role in successful outdoor potty training.
Very young puppies will need frequent trips outside that might be a bit challenging for elderly or apartment owners. In this case, it is best to start with potty pads indoors. Another reason to limit your new puppy to indoor potty training is the fact that you need to limit your puppy's exposure outside in public places until he or she is fully vaccinated.
In this article you will read some tips of how to potty train a puppy using pads indoors.
The number one suggestion I can give you is to always "be patient" with a new puppy. Potty training can progress quickly or slowly. It all depends upon your skills and consistency plus the puppy's personality. I have heard people say, "I just could not potty train that dog." Chances are the problem was more within the trainer than the dog. All dogs can be potty trained, but not all dog owners are skilled trainers.
Points to remember about puppies:
  • Puppies cannot control their bladder until they are at least 16 weeks old. Never expect a fully potty trained puppy until 16 weeks and older of age. As much as you would like for the puppy to do as you desire, it is just simply impossible. You as the trainer needs to realize this fact and be patient.
  • Puppies can only hold their bladder as long as age in months plus one hour. For example, a four month old puppy can hold it for five hours. This time schedule includes during the night hours as well.
  • Every breed is different. A toy breed might need more frequent potty breaks. They have smaller bladders.
  • Every puppy within breeds is an individual and may take less time or more time to potty train. For example, your first puppy of the same breed might potty train very quickly, and the second puppy of the same breed even from the same parents may take longer or even less time.
Be prepared to supervise your puppy at all times. This is key to successful potty training inside or outdoors. You cannot prevent an accident unless you keep your eyes upon the puppy. Here is some help:
  • Take puppy to potty pad frequently depending upon puppy's age and bladder strength. Very young puppies may require potty pad trips as often as every 15 minutes. It is better to waste a trip and have nothing happen then to witness an accident. Be prepared at all times with a tasty, nutritious treat for reinforcement of when puppy does it right.
  • Use a timer if you find it hard for to remember to take puppy to the spot.
  • Learn your puppy's behavior of when he or she is about to use the spot. If you see him sniffing the ground or floor, circling or whining, take him quickly to the spot.
  • Invest in a long leash if you need to use one to keep puppy within your sight. You can tie it around your waist or some heavy furniture. It will all be worth it in the end.
You can use a crate. Crates are useful potty training tools. Dogs do not like to soil where they sleep. Many times, if new owners will introduce young puppies to a crate immediately upon arriving into a new home, the puppy will see the crate as its personal den and safe place. Points to remember about crates:
  • Choose the appropriate size for your puppy, puppy should be able to lie down and turn around with no extra room. If you choose a crate too big, the puppy will use one end as a toilet and the other end for resting which delays potty training. Dividers can help with larger crates.
  • Try to make the crate a wonderful place for your dog to dwell. If you put treats in the crate, but them at the back of the crate. You can also leave food stuffed toys in puppy's crate to help them associate crate to something pleasant.
  • Always reward your puppy with treats for going into the crate. Never use a crate for punishment.
Routine and consistency on the part of the trainer is a must. Set a schedule and stick to it. Dogs love routines.

Most puppies need bathroom privileges when they wake up in the morning, after eating, after playing and after napping. Be sure you make all these times and many more in between.

Take your puppy to the spot any time they have not been for an hour or two.

Take puppy to the potty pad anytime you suspect he or she is about to go. If nothing happens, don't allow puppy to run around and play. Put him in the crate for 10 to 15 minutes, then release him and try again. Repeat these steps until puppy eliminates.

Feed your puppy on a schedule instead of free feedings. If you control the times your puppy eats, you can better control when puppy will have bowel movements and urinates.

Choose the spot for the potty pad and never put it any place else. You will confuse puppy if you move the pad from place to place. He will have accidents and it will take longer to train.

Always reward your puppy with lots of praise and a tasty, nutritious treats when he does his business correctly. Use a leash and walk the puppy to the puppy pad if he is easily distracted.

Many of the tips above can apply to outdoor training or when it is time to transition your puppy from the pad to outdoor training. Remember to always go out the same door and to the same spot outdoors. Use the same command every time. Be ready to reward with a treat. You can also move the potty pad outdoors and then eliminate the potty pad altogether once puppy learns to do his business outdoors. Move the potty pad a short distance indoors closer and closer to the door you will go out of and then continue to move the pad a short distance all the way to the final spot outdoors.

Remain calm about accidents. If they occur indoors, just clean it up. Never punish the puppy for an accident "unless" you catch them in the act. And then, just get down near your puppy's ear, clap your hands loudly at its ears and say "NO" very sternly. Then lead puppy to the correct spot and give your command. If by chance they do it correctly this time, be ready to give lavish praise and a treat.

Important Aspects of the Perinatal Period to Help Produce Healthier, Longer Lived, More Stable Dogs

Reputable breeders put their all into producing healthy and awesome puppies. Considerations include:
  • selecting breeding stock with care
  • considering health clearances and personality traits
  • raising puppies in cozy quarters
  • feeding a high quality dog food to moms, dads and babies

A very important period of puppy development is within the perinatal period. The perinatal period is the time from conception until just after birth.
Puppies in this period of time go through intense development, which lays the foundation for the puppy's lifetime of health, mental stability and even how long they will live.
It use to be most breeders bred their dogs young and retired them early because young dogs are typically more fertile than older ones. Recent research suggests if long life of puppies/dogs is a breeding goal, you should be aware that sperm produced later in a dog's life rather than in its youth are more likely to produce a longer life span for the puppies. In short, breeding a bitch from long-lived pedigrees to older dogs may produce pups who will live longer.
Other considerations to ponder:
Pregnant dams face two types of stress:
  • negative or distress
  • positive stress
Both types of stress can and does effect puppies. Animal researchers think puppies who's mothers experienced distress during pregnancy are more likely to be anxious and irritable as adults, lower intelligence and shorter attention spans.

By contrast puppies who's dams have nurturing enriched pregnancies are more likely to be calmer, more stable adults that learn, breed and in essence do everything better. It makes sense to really take good care of a pregnant bitch if we want to birth healthy, thriving puppies.

How can we know our bitch is stressed out? A bitch's distress may come from:
  • things that frighten her
  • things unpleasant to her
  • things painful to her
On a happier note, a bitch may benefit from:
  • activities she enjoys
  • situations and people she enjoys
As a final thought here, I suppose it is most important to know our dams really well and be prepared to fill their lives with comfort and enrichment so their puppies will be healthier, more stable and live longer lives.

Another important consideration is the dam's mothering abilities in the hours right after birth and early days. Good mothers will:
  • lick (which I think is kissing their babies and bathing them)
  • nuzzle
  • poke
  • touch
  • clean bottoms as if to keep diapers changed regularly
  • good mothers will wrap herself around her babies and position herself in somewhat awkward looking positions just to give her babies the perfect opportunity to nurse
Researchers think high quality mothers will produce puppies less anxious and aggressive in adulthood. It is similar to human mothers in my opinion. A good human mother will produce and rear high quality adults able to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. It is the same in the animal kingdom.

You can also count on a good mother having babies who will become good mothers in the animal world. This also holds true for humans as well. A good dog mother will produce puppies who are more stable and trainable.

Breeders will fair better if they choose their breeding stock for their mothering abilities and allow the dams to be present with her pups as much as possible during the early weeks.

In other words, don't be hasty to take control. Allow the mom to perform according to her gut instincts and believe that she knows more about it that you do.

I have read and heard of breeders who try to take control from the beginning of cutting the cord all the way through to time to sell the puppies.

It is best to let the dam do the job nature intended her to do. Don't be hasty about cutting cords, tying then up with thread, taking frequent temperatures, and so on, allow the dam to chew and tie off the cord by instinct.

You don't have to have a table full of scissors, thread, and all kinds of gear like you are a surgeon getting ready to do surgery. Just be sure you give your dam lots of love, comfort and cozy quarters while she does what mother nature intended for her to do.

Of course, you need to provide warmth. One of the easiest ways to lose a newborn pup is from chilling. In fared heaters are good to use to warm up puppies right after birth. You can even use a hair dryer. You need to keep the room warm as well, at least 80 degrees.

If you have a dam who refuses to be a good mother, of course, you will have to step in and do as much as possible to ensure the puppies start out right.

You will  have to focus upon feeding, cleaning, stimulation of the puppy's entire body, but with special emphasis on the groin, anus and abdomen as puppies cannot eliminate all by themselves. This is why you see dams licking the puppy's bottom soon after birth. She is stimulating the puppy to defecate and urinate.

If you end up doing this yourself, take a cotton ball moistened with some baby oil and rub the genital area gently until the puppy defecates or urinates. You will have to do this several times a day. After a few weeks, the puppy will begin to function normally without the stimulation.

Review of a Few Dogs Within the Toy Group

The American Kennel Club currently registers 193 dog breeds. Each of these dog breeds are assigned to a certain group. These groups are:
  • Herding
  • Hound
  • Toy
  • Non-Sporting
  • Terrier
  • Working
Each dog breed we have today were bred specifically for certain purposes. In this article I will review a few breeds in the Toy Group. These adorable dogs are small most usually in stature, but never small on personality, talent or intelligence. There are 21 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club in the Toy Group.

The Poodle comes in three size varieties. The toy size is the smallest. The Poodle is well known as the national dog of France. It started as a standard size and actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany where it was recognized for superior swimming abilities. The 20th century brought America the toy version of the poodle. The toy poodle's main role in life is as a companion dog dwelling in the city or in country life, but always as an adored inside dog.

The Affenpinscher is somewhat rare in the United States. He is a toy dog full of confidence. They are not classified as terriers but were bred to work like one. In the German stables during the 1600s, the Affenpinscher had an important job of hunting rats and eliminating them. I am not sure if they ate the rats for food or just killed them. At any rate, they were very important workers to the German people who owned stables. They also have the look of a monkey somewhat and so have been nicknamed "monkey dogs." They are loyal and affectionate, but can also be quite stubborn according to their fancier's opinions.

The Brussels Griffon is a smart and devoted companion dog. They have been noted, however, to be somewhat sensitive. They weigh anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds and were well-known for centuries in Europe before coming to America. The Brussels Griffon was known as a rough and tumble rat dog who rose to live a life of sophistication among the noble people in Europe.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most popular toy dogs today (2019). They have a close tie to British history. Their regal, elegant and graceful appearance brought them great favor by King Charles I and his son Charles II. These royal men were quite concerned about breeding their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and this may account for the beauty and all that he is for us today. They were bred to be loving lap dogs adored by their owners. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel descended from sporting dogs. This fact accounts for their requirement of moderate exercise and their love of outdoor activities.

The Chihuahua is one of our tiny dogs with a big personality. They are sometimes so small, they can be carried inside a purse. The Chihuahua is a national Mexico symbol. They were bred as hardy little dogs who lived in remote Mexican villages until the mid 1800s. It was at this time, the Americans became interested in the Chihuahua. The breed today is bred as a loyal and charming companion. They are full of confidence and hold their heads quite high within their family units.

These are just a few of the most popular toy dogs. There are 21 toy dogs in all.
