Wheat in dog treats is a common reason for allergy. Guess what? You might be paying a vet thousands of dollars a year to treat allergies in your dog, when all you have to do is NOT buy dog treats or food with the ingredients of wheat. Simple.

Wheat in dog treats can cause a dog to have itchy skin, ear infections, diarrhea, vomiting and excessive gas. Corn is another cheap way to boost protein content, however, dog treats containing corn is difficult for pets to digest. Corn ingredients in dog treats also can cause stress on the animal's kidneys. Been to the vet lately for a kidney infection in your dog. Corn in the diet could be the cause. Eliminate it.  Corn is the #3 reason for allergies in dogs. Again, you might be paying expensive vet bills for expensive allergy medicines when all you need to do is choose your dog treats more wisely. Read the labels and avoid treats that contain corn as well.

Corn in dog treats can make the animal more susceptible to mold such as Aflatoxin.

By-Product Meals: This is one that should not be in the dog treats you choose at all! Don't even go there. Just put it back on the shelf. No good for your beloved dog companion.

Artificial colors provide no nutritional value. They are often used to make the treat prettier, or make a treat look like a fruit or vegetable. Colorants were introduced into dog treats without any medical studies. Why not? Just an animal. Right? But when it is your beloved dog, why take a chance about anything you give he or she to eat. You could be slowly poisoning your pet and don't even realize it.

BHA/BHT Preservatives are not natural preservatives, but are used in cheap dog treats, even more expensive dog treats to preserve the food over time. They are used because they are cheap to use, but provide no nutritional value and could even be harmful. Avoid dog food and treats with these kind of preservatives.

Propylene Glycol has been proven to cause anemia in cats and is banned from use in cat foods by the FDA. Data also indicates propylene glycol is toxic to dogs with a 50% chance of being lethal at doses of 9mL/kg. Watch out for this ingredient in your pet treats. It is easy to be mislead about animal nutrition when you are not well informed. It could be a sick dog or a dead dog. Don't take the chance.

The Bouvier des Flandres Dog Breed is Large, Rugged and Compact

The Bouvier des Flandres dogs were rugged working dogs back in the days of first appearance on farms in Flanders. The monks in Flanders were among the earliest known breeders. The French name of the breed means "Cow Herder of Flanders." Judging from his appearance in the photo below, I would hire him to do farm work. He looks as if no job is too tough for him to handle.


These dogs stand as high as 27.5 inches, they are heavy boned and have powerful muscles beneath a weatherproof coat. The Bouviers were taught to do anything that needs doing in a barnyard or pasture with the exception of milking the cows. They are more than farm equipment. They have a sterling character, a huge heart and keen intelligence. All these traits have endeared them to dog lovers all over the world.

On the French northern plain in Southwest Flanders, owners and farmers needed help churning butter and grist mill, hauling the products to market, driving the cattle and guarding the farm and stock. These job duties were those of the Bouvier des Flandres Dogs.

Today, it is important to socialize the Bouvier, enroll them into obedience training. A puppy kindergarten is also highly recommended. Positive reinforcement training is a good start.

The Bouvier dogs are highly protective by nature. They should make good guard dogs for a family. They are loving with children and make excellent family dogs, however, be aware the early puppy behavior can be too rough for small children. Crate training is essential, humane and safe. The Short-Tailed Boston Terrier Famous for a Tuxedo Coat

Boston Terriers are well balanced and compact dogs weighing no more than 25 pounds. They wag a little short tail and are most famous for their Tuxedo coat. They are white or black, brindle or seal. They have large, dark and round eyes giving the Boston Terrier a kind and intelligent expression that will melt your heart.


The Boston Terrier is nicknamed the American gentleman among dogs because they have such a gentle disposition. This breed is an American creation resulting from a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier.

Most usually you can let a Boston Terrier out into the yard and they will stand near the door waiting first for their owners to join them (the gentleman disposition).

Exercise may depend upon your own activity level and living arrangements. They love to run and play and should be contained within a fenced area or on leash. The Boston will enjoy playing fetch, tossing flying discs and playing with large balls. If he is one that enjoys less activity, a daily walk may be enough exercise. The Boston will enjoy walks in the park where they can mix and mingle with other dogs and people. Many Bostons also enjoy mental stimulation from agility or obedience classes.

The Borzoi is a Large and Elegant Sight Hound

This hound is constructed along the same lines as the ancient Greyhound. Mature males stand at least 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh 75 to 105 pounds. Females are smaller as is with most breeds. The Borzoi was once known as Russian Wolf Hounds. They were bred to be swift and strong enough to go after and pin ferocious lupine quarry. Isn't that interesting?

The Borzoi in full stride is a sight to see with their majestic moves swiftly on the go. He looks like royalty showcasing his great strength with grace and glamor cruising along at 35 to 40 miles per hour.


Russian aristocracy bred the Borzoi in America prior to 1936 for hundreds of years. Their breed history shows accounts of hunting expeditions of several Mongol rulers from the time of the conqueror, Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Long hounds were mentioned as principal coursing dogs.

Daily exercise is crucial for the Borzoi to remain happy and healthy. Be alert to the fact that these dogs will chase after anything that moves. Keep them on a leash and/or in fenced in areas. The Border Terrier with an "Otter Head"

The Border Terrier is a small dog weighing from 11.5 to 15.5 pounds and standing from 11 to 16 inches at the shoulder. The easiest ways to recognize them apart from other terriers is the unique head shape called "otter head." They are also distinguished from other terriers by the longer legs. This breed's fans cherish them most for their tough, no-nonsense working abilities. Below is a picture of a Red Grizzled Border Terrier.

The Border Terrier originates on either side of the Cheviot Hills that form the Border country. They may be regarded as one of the oldest kinds of terriers in Great Britain.

By instinct the Border Terrier chases small animals they deem as prey. Walk them on a leash to avoid them running off after "someone" or "something" they think is pure prey for them to chase after and capture for food. They have even been known to chase automobiles as result of their instinct desires to chase and hunt. Border Terriers on the farms in the 18th century were expected to find their own food; they had to become good hunters to survive.

Train and exercise your Border Terrier as a team effort. The bonds and vigilance you create best protects him from his own instincts to chase and hunt after things not appropriate.

As an early working terrier, he was valued for the ability to go after and bolt fox. He also was effectively used for vermin control on farms of the Cheviot Hills, Great Britain areas.

The Border Collie is Athletic as Well as an Excellent Herder

 The overall look of a Border Collie is that of a muscular but nimble worker unspoiled by passing fads. The Border Collie can have a medium length rough coat or a shorter smooth coat that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Below is one of my favorite colors in the Border Collie, a "Blue Merle."

I wish the shih tzu had this color in their lines.

The Border Collie is a medium sized herder who stands 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder. His oval eyes focused with an intense gaze conveys this dog breed's high intelligence. The gaze is called the "famous herding eye," and is a breed hallmark. I think this is just remarkable how our animals are all given to us for specific purposes. This is a beautiful dog in my opinion (the blue merle). His eyes just gaze out so lovingly over his master's flock, ready to take action, at anytime.Watch them in motion and observe how agile, balanced and tireless they are.

Their exact origins are hidden away in time and subject to speculation. It is clear after the development of dogs used by man to hunt, sheepdogs of various kinds were bred worldwide to protect the flocks. This has been a fact since biblical times when flocks of goats, sheep and cattle were the symbol of an individual's wealth.

People needed a reliable dog to drive and protect their fortunes. A wild dog would savage the flock. Sheepdogs were willing to protect it. The Border Collie was one in which people could rely upon as he had an active ability to serve and respond to the master's bidding.

The wild dogs of course were never to be trusted with such an important job as protecting the flocks and they could never be caught and trained to do so. The only purpose the wild dog had for the flocks was to attack and eat them. The Border Collie knew the wishes of his master and guarded the flock with love and protection just as if his master was along side him, obeying his master's wishes completely.

The Border Collie, like us humans, thrive best when they have a job to do. Provide them plenty of space to run. Assign them a job such as watching over a mature, well behaved child. They love their families and are somewhat reserved around strangers.

Creating a well behaved and socialized Border Collie does not happen by accident. You might also be aware of the fact that some Border Collies tend to be uncertain or noise-sensitive when young. It makes sense to introduce them more to the mature well behaved child than to subject them to noises of a crying infant. Wait until your younger children are able to understand the needs of the Border Collie. They of course make good companions for older adults and could be a useful guard to them if trained properly.

Puppy classes are highly recommended as the classes will introduce the Border Collie to different people, animals, sights and sounds. The results might surprise you. The Charming Bolognese Developed in Italy Centuries Ago

This little dog was extremely valued in Italy as early as the eleventh and twelfth centuries. They were favorites of nobility during the Renaissance era because of their beauty, grace and charm. The Bolognese can be seen in tapestry work as far back as the 17th century produced by Flemish craftsmen. A famous painting of the Duke Frederico Gonzaga shows him caressing his Bolognese by the Venetian. He and she belong to the Bichon family group of dogs and are in the Toy Group of American Kennel Club.

This little dog loves attention and make excellent house pets. They get along well with other dogs, big and small. The Bolognese form a strong bond with people with whom they spend the most time. Their coats are white. They are a small size with a stocky and compact body, square build and well muscled. Lips and nose are black. Muzzle, as you can see in this picture, is large. Eyes are open and round. His or her ears are set high and are long hanging rigid at the base of head. Their tail is carried curved over the back. Height varies from 10.5 to 12 inches for a male and 10 to 11 inches for a female. Weight is anywhere from 6 to 14 pounds.

They have a single coat with no undercoat that falls in loose open ringlets or flocks all over the body, shorter hair is on the face. The coat texture is woolly, not silky. The Boerboel Dog is One of the Mastiff-Type Breeds

The word Boerboel means "Farm Dog." He serves as a working dog as well as a loyal companion in his home country of South Africa. He has a short, dense coat in colors of brindle, brown, cream, reddish brown or tawny. His tail can be docked. According to legends, docking the tail was done for practicality. He is also known as the South African Mastiff bred for the purpose of guarding the homestead. He is one of the most powerful of all dog breeds.

He was most likely introduced to the United States by the American anthropologist, Dr. Carl Semencic who wrote about him in Dog World Magazine. Semencic said his early familiarity with the breed occurred within his own travels to South Africa where Boerboel breeding today has become both a hobby and an industry.

His personality is said to be calm, stable and of a confident composure. They are obedient and intelligent and have strong territorial instincts. He is very popular as the farm guard dog as well as for the same reason of guarding in urban communities. (source: wikipedia)
