This little dog was extremely valued in Italy as early as the eleventh and twelfth centuries. They were favorites of nobility during the Renaissance era because of their beauty, grace and charm. The Bolognese can be seen in tapestry work as far back as the 17th century produced by Flemish craftsmen. A famous painting of the Duke Frederico Gonzaga shows him caressing his Bolognese by the Venetian. He and she belong to the Bichon family group of dogs and are in the Toy Group of American Kennel Club.

Height varies from 10.5 to 12 inches for a male and 10 to 11 inches for a female. Weight is anywhere from 6 to 14 pounds.

They have a single coat with no undercoat that falls in loose open ringlets or flocks all over the body, shorter hair is on the face. The coat texture is woolly, not silky.
