Avoid rugs of any kind.

Exterior Décor

The exterior decoration of your Groom Shop is very important also. Try to attract attention to your  Groom Shop. Beautiful paintings of on either side of your shop name are very attractive. The exterior design of your Groom Shop is the face it shows the world. Careful thought should be given to this very important piece of your décor. Reception Room

A wall or petition separating the reception room from work areas in the shop is a must. A beautiful and comfortable reception room for your customers to bring their  or wait to pick up is most desirable. The reception room should be the most attractive area of the  Groom Shop. Furnish the area with nice, comfortable chairs, a coffee table or long reception table with dog magazines for your customers to look at. A desirable and profitable piece of furniture is the accessory display cabinet. One or two cabinets tastefully displaying a variety of accessories is most desirable and profitable. You can enhance the reception room with paintings or photos of dogs and puppies you have groomed. If you show dogs, a display of ribbons, rosettes, and trophies is most impressive. Prominently display photographs of hairstyles and clips for your customers to get an idea of what they would like for their own. A beautiful reception room in your Groom Shop can make a most favorable impression on your customers while enticing them to purchase your particular accessories. A price chart displayed prominently in the reception room is essential. This way no one can quarrel about price discrimination.


A “Dutch” door should separate your work area from the reception room. A Dutch door is a swinging door made in two parts. The bottom half can be locked while the top half remains open.

What the Shih Tzu Owner Should Know About Grooming: Part III

Scissors are needed for Shih Tzu grooming. The “barber type” with the sharp, straight edge is used for most scissoring. The barber type scissors are used for cutting the hair of a Shih Tzu to the correct length for a fine finishing touch.



A toenail clipper and a file are necessary for Shih Tzu grooming. The average Shih Tzu owner will probably not want to buy all of the top-quality equipment that a professional Shih Tzu groomer would need. You can improvise. A steady table that is already available in your home can be used for the Shih Tzu grooming table. You can glue a piece of skid-proof vinyl or rubber matting on the top of the table. You can purchase a grooming post from a pet supply store or over the internet. The table can also be placed against a wall and a rope attached to the wall with a hook to serve as a grooming post. The rope can be tied loosely around the Shih Tzu to help keep the Shih Tzu under control. If you decide to buy a professional grooming table, one with a 36” X 24” top is the best buy.

If you are unable to install a bathtub with a platform to make the sides waist high so there would be a minimum of back bending, the next best thing would be to use or install a laundry tub. For a single bath or one Shih Tzu in the household, the regular bathtub is sufficient.

In the summertime, if you keep your Shih Tzu in a puppy cut, you could let the Shih Tzu air-dry outside after a good towel-drying. In winter, brushing and using a dry bath powder can clean the Shih Tzu and give him a pleasant odor in between regular bathing. Dry bath powder is also useful for daily cleaning of the face and feet of your Shih Tzu. There are liquid versions available as well.

For fluff drying and to get the result of a professional groomer you will need a floor dryer. Otherwise a good hand held human blow dryer will be sufficient.

A good lanolin-base shampoo that is biodegradable is best. I truly have found the shampoos manufactured for HealthyPetNet to be of excellent quality for my Shih Tzu. However, there are many other excellent brands of shampoo on the market. A high quality shampoo will mix completely with water, will suds easily and rinse out easily leaving no residue in the Shih Tzu’s hair. A good crème rinse is recommended after each bath.

Generally, you can bathe your Shih Tzu weekly if you find a good quality shampoo and crème rinse that does not dry out the skin. If the skin of your Shih Tzu becomes dry with weekly baths, try every other week.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed

North Central Louisiana is home land to the Catahoula Leopard Dogs in the geographic area around the Catahoula Lake. The word Catahoula is of Choctaw Indian origin translated into English as being "sacred lake." First settlers in this Louisiana area found the woods full of wild hogs and these Indian dogs.



The Catahoula Leopard dogs have been taken to Venezuela to gather wild Brahman cattle on huge ranches. There are  other names this dog goes by. They are:

• Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog
• Catahoula Cur
• Catahoula Hog Dog
• Catahoula Hound

The coat texture varies, some have a slick/painted-on look, spotted, coarse or woolly/shaggy. Most all of these dogs have a short coat. (Source: American Kennel Club)

These dogs are highly intelligent and have lots of energy. They are assertive but not aggressive by nature. They make good family dogs. The Catahoula Dogs make outstanding tracking and hunting dogs. They have been used to hunt feral pigs, squirrel, deer, raccoon, mountain lions and black bears. They often track silently and begin making their distinctive baying bark, eye to eye with the prey once it is stopped and they hold it in position without touching the animal. They use only posture, eye contact and lateral shifts to hold the prey in position.

What the Shih Tzu Owner Should Know About Grooming Part II: Getting to Know Grooming Equipment

If you don’t have good equipment and products there is no way you will have a well groomed Shih Tzu. As with all jobs, proper tools and products are essential to doing a job well.


Clippers

One of the most important pieces of equipment is the clipper. For a Shih Tzu owner grooming only one Shih Tzu, one of the best is Oster with snap-on blades. The blades can be changed easily. Various blades needed are No. 10, No. 7 and No. 4. No. 10 will give you a complete shave down. No. 7 blade will give you not so close of a cut as the No. 10. No 4 blade will give you the stylish puppy cut that so many Shih Tzu pet owners like for their pet Shih Tzu.

Combs

You will need a fine-toothed comb and a medium-toothed comb. You will also need a very tiny comb to comb the hair on the face. Combs with metal handles are more durable.

Brushes

The brush is very important. While the professional groomer who grooms all the breeds will need a variety of brushes, the Shih Tzu owner will need the proper brushes for a Shih Tzu. A soft wire slicker brush is the best for fluff-drying. It can be used to remove tangles from the Shih Tzu’s coat, but it must be used very gently. The hard wire slicker is used to remove mats. A pin brush is used for tidying the long hair of a Shih Tzu. It cannot be used for “hard” brushing. If your Shih Tzu’s hair is fine, you can use a natural-bristle brush made of boar bristles. A vegetable brush or toothbrush can be used on all the places that are hard to get at, especially on the face, around and between the eyes of the Shih Tzu.

Use a spray conditioner when brushing your Shih Tzu’s hair. The conditioner should have a lanolin base and should not contain alcohol. Alcohol can discolor and dry out the hair of the Shih Tzu. If you do not have the correct type on hand, use plain water in a spray bottle. When you use coat conditioner or water when brushing your Shih Tzu’s hair, you will prevent static electricity and causing the hair to break.

Some knowledge of anatomy is useful. You will need to maintain
proper control of the Shih Tzu while grooming. Control points
are used to alert the Shih Tzu to what the groomer wants him to
do. Shih Tzu puppies are especially important for the groomer to

6. All Shih Tzu owners should have some knowledge of ticks,
fleas, and lice and know what to do if the Shih Tzu becomes
infested with any of these parasites.

The Carolina Dog Breed is Possibly One of the Ancient Free-Ranging Dogs of the United States

Normal roaming grounds for the free-ranging dogs were from the Southeast through the desert Southwest in ancient times. Studies show behavior and ecology suggest a close ancestry with a possible descent with the Carolina Dog Breed of today. The ancient free ranging dogs accompanied man across the Bering land bridge into North America some 10,000 to 14,000 years ago. Just imagine man (most likely native Americans)crossing over these lands and these dogs appearing to accompany them. I notice on the old westerns, they would often put dogs in their episodes that resemble these dogs. Sometimes they will be crossing over the lands, other times might just be in the middle of town where their saloons and other business were.



Their personality is generally shy and suspicious. Once these dogs accepts a human into their pack the shyness and suspicion disappears toward that human. The Carolina Dogs are said to be easily trained and eager to please. They are assigned to the Hound Group in the American Kennel Club registry. I imagine they probably have some kind of special "howling" noise they make, but I am unsure about this. I can imagine them sitting way up high on a mountain with their heads up in the air and making that howling noise that perhaps only their human companions or other in their pack would understand.

An interesting fact about the Carolina dogs is that they dig snout pits. These are small, conical depressions in the dirt that fit the dog's muzzle exactly. Females are the ones who do most of the digging of snout pits between September and January. I suppose the males are welcome in the pits when a female is not using them or perhaps the females go around digging multiple pits for anyone in their pack to enjoy. (source: American Kennel Club)

Another fascinating story about the Carolina dog's ancestors is that they perhaps came from the feral wild dogs in the Southeastern United States were domesticated in ancient times by Paleolithic Native American peoples. It is believed the Carolina Dogs possibly lived in the wild for thousands of years with some being periodically re-domesticated or semi-domesticated by Native American peoples.

Another unique trait of the Carolina Dog from studies by Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin, Jr. show in the wild they defecated and urinated in streams, creeks and other bodies of water suggesting long-term adaptation to the wild via the behavior of hiding their scent in water in order to evade wolves and coyotes who are known to kill dogs. I think this is absolutely fascinating information. Who, but the creator of this animal, could have taught them ways to protect themselves from hungry wolves and coyotes. We think we got troubles in this day and time with different things, but just think of how the people in these ancient lands had to deal with wolves and coyotes busting through their doors and windows!

The Cardigan Welsh Corgis is a Powerful Little Worker

They are long in body, short on legs, built with sturdy bones and have a deep chest. The Cardigan Welsh Corgis moves powerfully with speed and grace. Weight is anywhere from 25 to 34 pounds, and as most dog breeds, the females will be a little smaller. A popular coat color is the blue-merle pattern, however, they come in several colors ranging from red (see photo below) to the blue-merle pattern. Cardigans have tails whereas the Pembrokes who look very similar do not have tails.



They are loyal, affectionate and smart, very even-tempered and never shy. Energy level is very active, they are rugged herders with a great love for the outdoors. If you too love the outdoors, the Cardigan Welsh Corgis dog breed may be just the perfect dog breed for you.

They thrive on mental and physical activity. They are said to be good with children, but better with supervision. They are good with other dogs with supervision. Shedding is seasonal. Grooming chores will be occasional. They respond well to appropriate training techniques. They stand 10.5 to 12.5 inches high. You can expect your Cardigan Welsh Corgis to live 12 to 15 years. Of course, what you feed him or her will either help the dog to live longer or less. This dog breed barks when necessary.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi originated in the British Isles. They first came to the Cardiganshire (actual place of origin) with the Celts while they migrated to Wales in 1200 BC. His purpose was to nip the heels of cattle and drive them which cleared his owner's ground of neighboring cattle before fences were used. This was an interesting first job for this dog breed!
