The CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association as well as veterinary schools continue to do research about the flu in canines.

Until recently the only strain seen in dogs was H3N8, which is a mutation of equine influenza circulating in the United States since 2004. There is a vaccine available. However, few veterinarians recommended it as the disease was very limited and most infected dogs recovered on their own.

Things changed in 2015 when H3N2 emerged on the scene. H3N2 was thought to be a mutation of an avian influenza that arrived in Chicago with a group of dogs imported from Korea. This virus behaves differently from H3N8. It mutates rapidly meaning there are different strains of the virus all around the country. It is highly infectious and has been found in 46 states.

Canine flu has two forms. In the mid form, symptoms are:

• a soft cough lasting from 2 to 4 weeks
• lethargic
• diminished appetite
• low fever (102.5 to 104)

The above are symptoms that can be other illnesses as well and so many cases have probably gone undetected and resolved themselves.

A more severe case symptoms are:

• a high fever 104 to 106
• can go into pneumonia and life-threatening complications
• fatality rate for canine flu is less than 10%

Cats, ferrets and guinea pigs have been known to contract canine flu. It manifests itself as an upper respiratory infection and usually resolves on its own. Latest CDC data indicates this flu cannot be transmitted to people.



Which dogs are most at risk?

All dogs who are exposed to the virus become infected. About 80% of those dogs show some clinical signs of the disease. Dogs at the highest risk of exposure are those who come into direct contact with other dogs. Dogs at boarding or daycare facilities, training classes, competitions, dog shows and shelters are at highest risk.

Tips for Dealing with Pet Loss

 My first major loss in life to death, believe it or not, was the death of my Shih Tzu puppy at 6 months, who had been fully vaccinated and contracted parvo and died. I was sick and crying for days.

The vet tried, but he could not save her life. Often, the death of a pet is the first major loss experienced by children as well. The pain and grief of losing a pet is as profound as the death of a person.

I was working a little part time job at a local donut shop when my little Ginger died. I remember standing in front of customers giving them their choice of donuts and could not hold back the tears. I also worked a full time job and for days I could not stop crying.

While she was in treatment at the vet's office, which lasted about 3 days, I would visit her, and when she saw me, she would try so hard to sit up and come to me, but too weak. She always perked up when she saw me. It was the saddest thing I ever went through in my life.

 How to Talk to Kids about pet loss: Have you ever heard stories of how parents would tell their children "Oh, Fluffy just ran away?" For many years this was the accepted way of dealing with pet's death. It was a form of denial. This method deprives children of the opportunity to mourn. I knew exactly what happened to my Ginger and went through the grieving process until healing began to set in.

We should also be direct with children. Children under five may not understand that death is permanent. It is normal for them to ask many times when their pet is coming back even after you tell them the pet has died.

Be reassuring. It is natural for death to cause anxiety in children. Children may even experience nightmares. Reassure them and be there for them. It shows the child that they can trust their family even in sad times.

Allow children to be present. This depends upon your own comfort level, but when at all possible allow children to be present during an euthanasia process. Children are curious, accepting and often a very big comfort to their grieving parents. It is healthy for them to see how peaceful the dying process can be.

Allow children to grieve. Children can express themselves during the grieving process in many ways, by talking, drawing pictures, having a ceremony. Have a celebration of life for the dog, such as creating photo collages or poems or favorite foods of the dog. Some families hold official funeral services for their pets. It is good for the kids to know that memories and love do not end when the body is gone.

Dogs and cats understand death. They miss the one that died. They sense the change that has taken place. They most likely experience some confusion just as children. Comfort your remaining pets just as you would your child.

The loss of a beloved pet is a terrible thing. There is no need to try and push aside the feelings of loss and the sadness the loss created, not to be mention the now empty place in your home. Allow yourself time to mourn the loss of your friend, the loss of the joy the pet brought to your family, and the time in your life that they signified.. Many areas offer pet loss support groups. There is no specific timeline for the grieving process to end. Some people grieve for months or even years.

The Chinook Dog Breed is a Devoted Family Dog

 The Chinook Breed was developed by Polar Explorer Arthur Treadwell Walden during the early 1900's on his farm in Wanalancet New Hampshire.



The Chinook is muscular and substantially built. The males stand around 26 inches at the shoulder. The females have a distinctly feminine look and are a little smaller. Be Aware of Winter Dangers for Dogs and Puppies

 Most of us are very much aware of the frigid winter temperatures posing danger to our companion animals. You should also be aware of the following seasonal dangers. Being alert to these things might just save your dog's life.

1. When playing outdoors with your dog be aware that a dog's body temperature drops rapidly when exercise stops. To prevent hypothermia, keep your dog dry and moving.
2. Many dogs love to romp and play freely in the snow off leash. Be aware that snow covers scents dogs use to navigate their surroundings. They can become easily lost even in familiar surroundings.
3. Dogs can fall through ice in unexpected ponds. If there are these types of areas where you and your dog exercise, restrict the pet to being on leash or find a fenced in area instead.

Compulsive Paw Chewing

One of the most common symptoms of allergic disease in dogs is "paw chewing." The dog might begin with licking at their paws and gradually go on into chewing their paws. When you take a look at their toes, pads and feet you see nothing to indicate the "why" to all the licking and chewing behaviors.

The skin starts to break down by the constant licking and chewing that almost always develops into a secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection. What causes the infernal itchiness? Chances are it is allergies. Dogs suffer from three main categories of allergic disease. They are:

1. fleas
2. environmental allergies
3. food allergies

So how do you determine exactly what kind of allergy your dog is suffering from? Flea allergies are the most common allergic disease in dogs. Flea allergies usually result in itchiness on the hindquarters and at the base of the tail. The second most common form of allergic disease in dogs is environmental allergies. Dogs react to the same environmental allergens that humans do such as trees, grasses, pollens, molds, dander, perfume, dust mites, cats and people. Depending on the cause environmental allergies can be seasonal.

Food allergies may be the most under-diagnosed in dogs. Dog food allergies are adverse reactions to ingredients found in the food they are fed. The most common ingredients in dog foods which cause allergic reactions are proteins in beef, dairy, chicken, soy and corn. Dog food allergies can cause itchy skin alone or stomach problems as well.

The only way to find out if your dog is allergic to food is to perform a strict 8-12 week elimination trial with a hypoallergenic diet and see if the condition improves.

When it comes to compulsive paw chewing, consider the following tips:

• Your vet can help you sort out the problem. Give your vet a detailed history. The vet can run tests, prescribe medications and determine whether your dog has a secondary bacterial or yeast infection that requires treatment.
• Check the toes. Contact dermatitis can occur when the skin comes in direct contact with an allergen such as grass. Rub down the paws with a damp cloth when your dog comes in from outdoors. Avoid products with alcohol. Use Life's Abundance Soothing Mist:
