Feeding and Taking Care of Aging Dogs

As our companion animals grow older their nutritional needs change. As pet parents we owe it to them to provide the best we can. Appropriate, targeted nourishment for our senior dogs can make a real difference in terms of long term happiness and longevity.

There are four stages of canine life:

  1. puppy
  2. adolescence
  3. adult
  4. senior
Different breeds age at differing rates. Size does not matter. Small breeds enter adolescence and reach full size as adults quicker than large breeds. Small breeds enjoy a longer period in the adult life stage. Large and giant breeds progress more rapidly to the senior life stage and overall have shorter lifespans. The average miniature poodle lives 15 years. A Great Dane's life expectancy is about 9 years.

There is not one specific age for a pet to become a senior. In general, veterinarians consider dogs ages 6 to 7 as having entered their senior years. Larger dogs reach seniority more quickly than small breed dogs. In human terms, a small or medium sized breed dog at seven years of age is the equivalent of a mid forties human being. A large or giant breed dog is more similar to a 50 to 56 year old human being.

Aging canines is a complex process that depends upon breed, environment and lifestyle. Even within the same breed, some dogs age more quickly than others. We see the same thing occurring in human beings. Your dog's unique state of health is more important than the date on the calendar. And for humans, we often hear, you are only as old as you feel!

Common health conditions in senior dogs include:

  • heart disease
  • kidney disease
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • joint disease
It is impossible for diet alone to address all of these conditions. We do know that providing senior dogs with optimal nutrition is the best thing you can do to ensure longevity.

In addition to regular veterinary check ups, pet parents should be observant for any of the following symptoms that warrant a visit to the vet:

  • sudden changes in appetite, either decreased or increased
  • increased thirst and urination
  • straining to urinate or defecate
  • persistent cough
  • panting, even when resting
  • vomiting
  • difficulty rising from a resting position, climbing stairs, or getting in and out of cars
  • increased incidents of indoor elimination
  • sudden changes in temperament
  • acting confused or disoriented
Nutritional plans for seniors should "especially" feature dietary supplements. Most senior dogs would benefit from taking a premium joint supplement. Aging joints are painful joints.

Good joint health is crucial to your companion animal’s well being. The ability to walk, run and jump represents a large part of your pet kids unique ability to express emotion. Unfortunately, aching and stiff joints are just as much a part of aging for dogs and cats as it is for humans. In fact, tens of millions of dogs and cats experience some form of joint challenges.

At present, several hip-and-joint formulas are marketed for companion animals. Unfortunately, most of these products treat the joint as an isolated goal; it is for this reason that they do not work as well as they could.

  Life's Abundance Agility supplement
is a holistic formula, which means that it takes into account the needs of the whole body, including all the parts that work with the joints.

This formula helps maintain healthy joint cartilage and connective tissue, and to aid in the production of healthy synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints.

Glucosamine helps maintain and promote joint and connective tissue health. It has been shown to be essential in the healthy development and ongoing maintenance of connective tissue and synovial fluid. Research studies indicate that Glucosamine supports healthy joint flexibility, mobility and lubrication. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural source of organic sulfur, an element vital to the maintenance of healthy joints, bones, ligaments and tendons.

Sea mussels also contain Chondroitin Sulfate, which works in tandem with Glucosamine. And hyaluronic acid helps to keep cartilage strong and flexible to better cushion joints. These nutrients work synergistically with the other ingredients in Agility (vitamins E and C, boswellia serrata, alfalfa leaf extract, chondroitin sulfate, manganese and boron) to supply your companion animal with a comprehensive formula to help maintain the health of the entire musculoskeletal system.

And last but not least, this holistic formula has a delicious flavor that your furry friends will love! Join thousands of satisfied customers, and help your pet kids lead a healthier and happier life with Agility Formula.

It is not uncommon for coats to lose their sheen later in life as well. Senior dog's skin may become dry and flaky. Adding a balanced skin and coat supplement might just make all the difference:

How would you rate your companion animal’s skin and coat health? Does your pet have …
  • Dry, flaky skin or a dull, brittle coat
  • Oily, foul smelling skin or a matted coat
  • Thin coat, excessive hair loss or red, blotchy skin
  • Excessive scratching (especially, seasonally)
Keeping your companion animal’s skin healthy and coat shiny can prove very challenging. There’s more to skin-and-coat health than regular shampooing and daily brushing.
Even though the skin is the body’s largest organ, it takes a backseat to other organs when it comes to nutrition. In fact, the nutrients eaten by your pet go directly to the other vital organs first (such as the brain, heart, lungs and liver); as a consequence, the skin often suffers. Even if you are already feeding your companion animal a high-quality, nutritionally dense food, sometimes it’s just not enough to ensure skin and coat health. In fact, problems relating to the skin and coat are much more common than you might think as they account for a significant percentage of trips to the vet.

Skin & Coat Formula Can Help!
A comprehensive nutritional supplement, Skin & Coat Formula for Dogs and Cats addresses skin and coat health in a holistic way. Unlike ordinary skin and coat supplements that contain fatty acids and a few other ingredients, this formula supplies a whole host of additional nutrients that work together to address the complex factors that play a role in supporting skin and coat health. The nutrients featured in this formula can yield several health-promoting benefits. Here are just some of the highlights of how this supplement works …
  • In addition to skin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids, this formula contains vitamin E and zinc, which help increase the effectiveness of the fatty acids.
  • The vitamin A in this formula helps cells to grow and supports the naturally-occurring layer of oil on the skin, helping to keep it healthy and supple.
  • This formula also contains vitamin C, which supports healthy collagen development.
  • And to top it off, our new and improved Skin & Coat now contains seven different B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, d-pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and biotin), all of which work with the other nutrients in this formula to aid in the many complex chemical reactions required for healthy skin and coat.
If your companion animal’s skin or coat is less than perfect, try a bottle of  Skin & Coat Formula with a comprehensive line-up of nutrients that work together to help support healthy skin and a shiny coat.
