Dogs Whine as a Way of Communicating with Family Members

Dogs use many methods to communicate with the exception of "talking" like humans. Dogs definitely communicate their feelings and desires. One of those way is "to whine."
My dogs always whine when they sense I am in trouble. My trouble saddens them and so they cry or whine in the background showing me "compassion." When I get out of trouble, my dogs immediately notice the difference. If they know the way is clear, they will run to my side, wagging their tails and with their tongues sticking out saying to me, "I am so happy now mommy that you are feeling better and are no longer in trouble. Let us be together again!
I recently suffered a bout of shingles, and shingles is very painful. A lot of the pain was generating from my elbow. One of my dogs knew exactly the origin of that pain. He jumped in my lap and buried his head immediately in that elbow, then looked up at me with the saddest eyes enough to make me cry!
I own shih tzu. Shih are are very well known for their compassion. He did not whine, but I heard his compassion with his body language.
Other reasons your dog might whine include:
  • He needs or wants something from you like food, water or to play or go for a walk. Once you figured out the "why" to your dog's whining and fix the problem, the whining should stop. If he is whining for more food and you know he has eaten enough, don't give in to this behavior. The whining will only get worse and you will end up with a fat dog.
  • He is whining solely for attention. This is very similar to how little kids whine to their parents. Our dogs and puppies sometimes see us as their mommy or their daddy and they will act just exactly like a child whining for mommy or daddy to pay them attention. If this be the case, make sure you are giving your dog enough attention, taking him for exercise walks and playing enough games with him. Dogs get bored and need mental stimulation.
  • He whines because he is stressed or scared. If your dog is also pacing, panting or trembling, he is likely fearful or anxious about something. Perhaps he hears an approaching storm. Many dogs will whine and become fearful of storms and some will find hiding places as if the storm is drawing near to them and they must protect themselves from the storm.
  • Dogs may also whine from physical distress like joint pain or stomach pain or some other health issue.
  • Some dogs may whine to say, "I am sorry" about something they did perhaps that they know they should not have done.
I crochet. My dogs sometimes get hold of the thread and talk about a tangled up mess that is as they wrap themselves around and around in crochet thread. I have had this happen a couple of times and I do get extremely excited about it. Recently, everything got very quiet. I thought, what is going on? Sure enough I had a dog wrapped around and around in crochet thread, but because of my past excitement over this behavior, there was no whining or barking, just a dull "silence." This meant to me, "mommy, I did it again, and I know I am not suppose to be wrapped up in your crochet thread, but here I am anyway.....a dead silence was in the room. I was surprised actually. He stood still enough for me to untangle while all others just watched and stood still.

The important lesson to learn from a whining dog is that he or she is NOT just being annoying. Your dog is "talking" to you. Listen. Find out what the whining is all about and fix it if you can.

Play Fun Games With Your Dogs and Puppies to Help Increase Intelligence

You have a new puppy. Training your puppy should begin as soon as he or she enters your door (of course after a short period of time in which you allow puppy to settle in and explore the new environment).
Playing fun games with your dog or new puppy is the most obvious way of building a relationship. Another great advantage to playing fun games is that it truly makes your dog "smarter." These kind of games are called "cognitive stimulation."
In this article I will introduce to you a few cognitive stimulation games designed to make  your dog smarter as well as improve your personal relationship together. They are easy for you and your dog to learn and play.
The Eye Contact Game teaches your dog to give you eye contact. It has been said by dog experts that teaching your dog to make good eye contact releases oxytocin in both you and your dog. It is like forming an attachment with your dog the same as if he or she was your child.
Step 1: Hold a tasty and nutritious treat to  your forehead or by your eye and ask your dog to look at you.
Step 2: Gradually fade the food to use a hand signal and a verbal command to ask your dog to look at you.
This fun game also helps you to get your dog's attention when he is distracted, which is a very useful tool that helps to ensure his safety.
Make changes to a routine walk with your dog or puppy. Start off going in a different direction or making a right turn when you normally make a left turn. Go up and down hills you previously did not explore. Expose your dog to new sights, smells and sounds.
The hot and cold game utilizes verbal communication and vocal tone to help your dog find a hidden treat or toy.
Step 1: Hide the treat or toy
Step 2: Use a calm tone for cold if your dog moves away from the hidden treat. Use a more upbeat or excited tone for hot as your dog gets closer to the hidden treat. With this game you hope to improve the dog's listening skills and build a special language shared just between you and your dog.
To improve your dog's reasoning skills, play the treat on the string game.
Step 1: Tie a ribbon or small rope to a treat. Hide the treat under a small object or platform or piece of furniture. Hide the treat far enough back so that he cannot reach the treat with his mouth or paw.
Step 3: Encourage your dog to investigate. See how long it takes for him to tug on the string to retrieve the treat.
You want your dog or puppy to develop reasoning skills to boost his confidence in problem solving, thus creating greater intelligence.
There are many more fun games you can play with your dog or puppy to help develop a close relationship between you both as well as to create greater intelligence in  your dog. Build a library full of mind games you can play with Fido.
For treats, I suggest using the Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats.
Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.
Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised lamb and chicken.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors.
With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

How to Quieten a Barking Dog

Dogs bark. This is completely normal and natural behavior for dogs. Humans just don't always like a barking dog. It can be a nuisance. It can occur at a time in your life when everything is so hectic you need complete silence just to think yet your dog is barking at the top of their lungs.
Sometimes they feel the "tension" you are feeling and they just respond with barking. This of course is an inappropriate time for barking. What can you do to stop a barking dog?
If your dog barks when you are not at home (and others tell  you about it), stage a leaving, then come back around and spy on Fido. What is he or she barking at? Is it movements outside the house or things seen through the windows?
An easy fix for window barking is to block the view. Close the curtains. Close the shades. Put up extra coverage if you have to. Put Fido in a room where there are no windows to look out of. If your dog stays outdoors barking inside a fenced in yard, keep the dog indoors rather than leaving he or she outdoors while you are gone (if this is feasible for you). If the dog is barking at what they see, this should solve the problem. Put some music on loud enough to drown out the outside noises.
If you find your dog seems to be barking at nothing and what seems like just for the heck of it, boredom is likely the cause. Boredom due to lack of exercise or mental stimulation can cause a barking dog. What else can he or she do but holler about it. Try giving the dog 30 minutes of attention and exercise in the morning or evening, whichever it is that you leave. If the dog still does not settle down, you might need to get a dog sitter.
Other possible remedies:
  • food puzzle toys
  • hollow rubber toys that you can stuff with treats
It really is okay if your dog gets most of its food from a food puzzle toy or hollow rubber toy especially if it calms them down and stops the barking.

Is your dog barking for attention? Sometimes this is the case. Don't pay attention to a barking dog that is doing it solely for the attention. Reward him with attention when he is calm and not barking.

Teach the dog a cue for being quiet. Have his favorite treat ready to reward him for good behavior. I recommend using a tasty and nutritious treat such as Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats.

When the dog stops barking, give a treat and praise. When the dog barks again, ignore it. Increase the time she must be quiet gradually before giving a treat. If she starts barking, step back a few steps and make the duration less. When you see your dog is understanding the process, add a command or cue word such as "quiet down." Be consistent with your training.

Lastly, accept the fact that dogs bark "sometimes." This is how they talk to the world outside themselves. In their minds, they are just communicating normally, and have not a clue barking is something that can be very annoying to human beings. You have to teach your dog this fact, and with practice and consistency, you will quieten down a barking dog.

Everyday Essential Grooming Tips to Keep Your Dog Feeling Their Best

The more carefully and often you groom your dogs the more they will come to love all the attention and respond favorably. It also matters what kind of products you use. But what else should actually come before all the grooming sessions? Plenty of exercise should always be in the routine of every dog. When a dog feels good from the inside they show it from the outside.

Be sure you feed your dog a high quality diet. What goes in the inside also appears on the outside in either a shiny healthy coat or a dull and brittle coat. You can also invest in supplements to help your dog gain the very best coat or hair possible. Use Life's Abundance Skin and Coat Formula for best results.
Whether you’re trying to tackle seasonal or year-round issues, help protect and nourish your companion animal from the inside out. Unlike ordinary supplements, this grain-free formula addresses skin and coat health in a holistic way.
The nutrients featured in this formula can yield several health-promoting benefits. Here are just some of the highlights of how this supplement works …
  • Vitamin E and zinc help increase the effectiveness of the skin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Vitamin A helps cells to grow and supports the skin’s natural oil layer, helping to keep it healthy and supple.
  • Vitamin C supports healthy collagen development.
  • Seven different B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, d-pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and biotin) work with the other nutrients in this formula to aid in the many complex chemical reactions required for healthy skin and coat.

Use gentle shampoo to nourish and cleanse the dog's coat or hair. If you use Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo, you will have NO need for putting on conditioner. You save money plus time when you use Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo as it leaves the coat conditioned as well.
Pamper your precious pet with a revitalizing botanical infusion of organic rosemary and sage. Enhanced with the nourishing essences of coconut and palm kernel oil, Revitalizing Shampoo naturally cleanses and beautifies coats. Even a small dollop of this conditioning formula works into a luxurious, foamy lather, to deeply cleanse and leave coats silky, fragrant and tangle-free. The luscious scents of mango and kiwi mingle with energizing citrus notes to bring out natural shine. Natural antioxidants from organic rosemary and sage help prevent damage from weathering and environmental factors. Natural emollients help soften hair and give the coat more body.

Revitalizing Shampoo doesn’t just mask odors … moisture activated odor-fighters react immediately to absorb and neutralize tough pet odors. All that’s left after a bath is a beautiful coat, fragrant with a delicate citrus aroma. Gentle enough for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age. Item Size: 12 fl. oz.

Of course, you always need to give your dog a good brushing before the bath. For brushing time, use Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist to help untangle the hair or coat, neutralize odors and leave coats silky soft and shiny.

Never neglect cleaning the teeth and regular professional cleaning plus daily treats of Life's Abundance Gourmet Dental Treats to help support healthy teeth and gums.

On Shih Tzu and other toy breeds, you will need to pay special attention to the feet and trim the hair that is between the pads of their feet on the bottom side. This reduces the chances of getting irritation between the pads of the feet and also helps with traction on different surfaces.

Every breed of dog requires regular ear cleaning for optimum ear health. Use a gentle, non-stinging cleaner such as Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner Botanical Blend. Continued use yields healthy clean ears that always smell terrific.

Check your dogs eyes regularly to be sure they are clear of matter or discharge. Wipe any clear discharge from the edge of eyes with a warm water moistened washcloth very gently. Never rub over the eyes. If  you notice persistent tearing or discharge, consult with your vet for appropriate treatment. Your dog's eyes should be clear and bright looking, never cloudy looking.

If  you raise puppies, the type of food  you feed and send your puppies home on is a crucial decision. Be ahead of your competition and develop a reputation of feeding the highest quality of food you most possibly can. We no longer have to rely on commercial dog foods prepared in large quantities and stockpiled. We can feed our pets fresh food everyday.
