Extra Ways You Can Spoil Your Dog Companions

There are so many ways a dog brings joy and happiness into our daily life. One of the ways we enjoy our dogs is pampering them now and then with special treats, toys and new activities. In this article I will discuss a few ways you can add some extra joy to your favorite pooch's life and just spoil them to the max.
If you like murder mysteries, you probably have seen a few of the Columbo episodes. I always enjoy seeing Peter Falk (star of the show) feeding his dog ice cream from an ice cream cone. Now this is something we don't want to do on a regular basis, but now and then, it can be fun and one of those ways we can show our dog a little extra love.
On a very hot day give you dog some kind of frozen treat if you don't want to feed them a little ice cream from a cone, cup or spoon. Frozen treats can help dogs cool off and it is fun to watch how much they enjoy these treats.
Stuff a Kong or other hollow toy with some peanut butter and put it into the freezer for a few hours before giving it to your dog. You might even try plugging the hole at the small end of the Kong and fill it with chicken broth before freezing.
Choose a pet supply store where you can take your dog with you. The different sights, smells and people will help stimulate him mentally. Push him around in the cart and show him all the toys. You might be surprised to see your dog can pick out his own toys better than you can. It is important to keep separate boxes of toys to rotate. Keep out a few for a couple days, then throw them back in the box, and throw out another set. Adding new toys now and then is highly recommended.
When the cool weather arrives in fall, spoil your dog with some new sweaters and even coats for walks. Your dog will love all the compliments on his high fashion sweaters and coats and you will too.
If you have a dog who loves to cuddle, he will most likely love a massage as well. In fact, I think about all dogs like to have their muscles massaged. Use soft, sweeping motions along the dog's body and of course avoid the areas he does like you to touch.
While you are spoiling your dog with massages you are also prepping he or she to accept grooming sessions that include trimming the nails and brushing his teeth. At this time you can spoil your dog a little further by adding a Life's Abundance Gourmet Dental Treat to his massage sessions. These treats will help keep the teeth clean and gums healthy. This treat is a honey and peanut butter recipe.

It never hurts to bake a few treats of your own now and then. Bake some dog biscuits tailored around his favorite foods. There are many home made baked treats you can find online just to give your dog a little extra something now and then. When you bake your own, you know exactly what ingredients have gone into the treat.

Famous Dogs Who Lived in the White House Review

Many United States presidents have kept pets while in office or have had pets as part of their family unit. In this article I will explore a few presidents and their family pets.
Presidential dogs or pups have been as much of tradition in the United States as baseball and apple pie. In fact, almost every President shared the White House with at least one dog. These dogs were as much of a staple of the capitol as was the First Family.
Let us begin our discussion of President's Famous Pets with the father of our nation, George Washington. He obviously adored American Foxhounds as he imported many hounds from England. French hounds were given to him as well by the Marquis de Lafayette and these hounds became the ancestors of today's American Foxhound. Isn't that interesting? George Washington was one of the key players in developing the American Foxhound. Some of his dogs were named:
  • Sweet Lips
  • Drunkard
  • Tipler
  • Tipsy
Thomas Jefferson was keenly interested in Briards. His first pregnant female was named "Buzzy." I like that name, "Buzzy." His dogs apparently resided in his family unit as there is no record of them living at the White House.

Here is a photo of Grace Coolidge with her Laddie Boy, an Airedale Terrier and Rob Roy, a white collie:

A Saint Bernard named Rollo, a Pekingese named Manchu, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Sailor Boy, a Manchester Terrier named Blackjack and a Bull Terrier named Pete were all part of Theodore Roosevelt's family unit.

Franklin D. Roosevelt owned a Scottish Terrier named Fala who incidentally receive a lot of fan mail while Roosevelt was in office.

Remember President Barack Obama's two Portuguese Water Dogs? Their names were Bo and Sunny. There are several photographs of the President and his family with Bo and Sunny.

An interesting piece of information also is that Abraham Lincoln owned a dog who was "assassinated" by a drunk with a knife just a few months after Lincoln's assassination. The dog's name was "Fido." It was after this that "Fido" became a generic name for dogs because of Lincoln's famous dog. Isn't that sad? And we think animal haters only exist today....Can you imagine how awful that must have been for that poor dog? No doubt he was killed out of the same kind of hatred that killed President Lincoln.

Just for Fun: Here Are a Few Fun and Fascinating Dog Facts You Probably Already Know!

These are just a few of the fun facts to know about dogs. There are many, many more. For example, did you know a dog's nose print is unique just the same as a person's fingerprint? Fascinating fact, right?
How about this one? Dogs dream just like humans dream. It is estimated puppies and senior dogs dream more frequently than any other dog age group. Next time you are sitting around the kitchen table with other dog friends drinking coffee, let them know this fascinating fact about our canine companions.
True dog lovers who include their dogs in every family event, about 70% so says surveys about this subject, sign their dog's name on their holiday card greetings. Signature might look something like this: Happy Holidays from the Smith Family and Puffy! A lot of people even include a photo holiday greeting including the dog in their holiday photo greeting. These are easy to get or find online.
Oh I bet everyone reading this article knows this one. A dog's sense of smell is legendary. A dog has as many as 300 million receptors in comparison to the human's nose of about 5 million.
Here is another one you can share with your friends over a cup of afternoon tea or coffee: Rin Tin Tin, a famous German Shepherd was nominated for an "Academy Award." All this time, I thought Lassie was the winner!
Speaking of Collies: The name Collie means "black." Collies one time tended black-faced sheep. Ah-ha, I bet you did not know that one.
The only breed of dog named for a fictional person is the Dandie Dinmont Terrier. The fictional character was from the novel by Sir Walter Scott called "Guy Mannering."
I don't know if this one is a real known fact, but I find it fascinating, have you ever noticed how the "Yorkie" is featured in many movies, maybe more from the Golden Age of Movies as beautiful women's closest companions.
The Basenji does not bark. He or she yodels.
Most of us dog lovers have read at least one article about the health benefits of being a dog owner. It is a fact, "human blood pressure goes down while petting a dog." Get stressed out and your blood pressure rises? Grab your dog and start petting him instead of a glass of wine or chocolate candy bar. Your blood pressure should go back down.
Here is one I really do not like at all. Dogs are colorblind. They see everything in blue or yellow. Just think of that. Every time your dog looks at you, you appear as either blue or yellow.
All dalmatians are born completely white. They develop their famous spots as they get older.
How many of you reading this article noticed a dog kicks backward sometimes after they go to the bathroom. Did you think it was to cover up the stuff? No. It is because they are marking their territory, using the scent glands in their feet.
Dogs are unique about marking territory. I had a female dog pregnant one time and just before she delivered she followed me everywhere rubbing her hind (place where babies came out) on my leg or pants legs.
After the babies were born, she stopped the behavior completely. I think it was her way of keeping my scent on her right where the babies would soon appear, probably made her feel more secure to have "her mommy's" scent on her behind at all times!

Getting Through the Baffling Teenage Years With Your Dog Successfully

If you thought puppy hood was a challenging time, just wait until your puppy grows into a teenager. Yes they do become teenagers just like kids. This period of time is still individual to each dog or breed of dog. Some do just fine. Others backslide on what seems to be everything you taught them in puppy hood.
Puppies become teenagers at about 8 months old and the period of time continues until he is two years old. When your puppy becomes a teenager is still dependent upon what breed and is also very individual, but as a rule of thumb, you can count on them reaching this milestone at about 8 months of age.
Some noticeable changes include:
  • they become larger and stronger
  • they might start showing some stubborn behavior
  • they might start wanting to explore outside their comfort zone
Don't make the common mistake of giving your puppy too much freedom too son. Puppies usually have an innate desire to be near you. As your puppy gets older and gains confidence he might no longer want to stay so close to you.

Here are some ways to deal with a teenager dog:
  • Start training new puppies soon after they settle into their new home with you. You need to teach them the basics of sit, down, stay, come, etc.
  • Stay consistent with training throughout the dog's life, but especially in the younger puppy years, so the dog learns who is in command and true leader of the pack (you) as well as gains a solid understanding of what he can and cannot do.
  • Positive reinforcement using nutritious and tasty food treats should always be available for successful behaviors. Be sure to break up the treats into smaller bites so you don't overfeed with treats. Use Life's Abundance Treats for best results. Try their treats from a Sampler Pack:
  • Teach self control by teaching your dog to "leave it" and "drop it."
  • Crate training has many positive effects upon your puppy. Teach that the create is a safe place to relax once house breaking is complete.Keep the crate around for the dog to continue seeing the crate as its personal den or relaxation place. Successful crate training helps keep the puppy out of many other kinds of trouble.
  • Keep practicing obedience training (basic skills) several times per week. Remember to reward your dog with tasty and nutritious treats. Most dogs find food treats the most rewarding, but some may prefer toys and playtime after training for good behavior.
  • Keep puppy safe chew toys available during the teenage years. Early teething is over, but the phase between 8 and 10 months is a time when the adult teeth settle in the jaw. Chewing continues. Provide safe chew toys and nutritious, tasty chew treats such as those offered through Life's Abundance.
  • The teenager years are even more important for you to ensure your dog is properly mentally and physically stimulated. Activities such as fetch, walks and other games, puzzle toys, food-dispensing toys even group classes are all very important at this stage of life.
If you train early and keep up with training, you will find the teenage years much easier to live through with your dog. The goal is always to work toward a well-adjusted, well mannered, happy and loving adult dog.

Funny Puppy Reactions to Common Household Items

You just brought a new puppy home. The fun times are about to begin. There are a few things puppies are notoriously afraid of. Common household items you ordinarily would not think would scare the little guy suddenly does.
Vacuums are probably at the top of the list. Don't be alarmed if you notice your new puppy either tries to hide from the big monster vacuum or tries to attack it. Just put yourself in the shoes of the puppy for a minute. Suddenly you hear this loud sound coming from an object moving closer and closer to you. Puppy is thinking, should I bite it, should I slap it, should I holler at it real loud and see if it will stop that unbearable noise that is killing my ears, or should I just find a safe place to hide.
Show your puppy a mirror and he will either be afraid of it or think he has a new buddy that looks just like him. Puppies are sometimes fun to watch scratching at the mirror trying to get the other guy out of there. Puppy says, "I must have a twin brother."
Television is an interesting device for puppies. Strange noises, moving objects, new voices makes a new puppy think "where is it all coming from?" Just wait until they see and hear another dog barking on the television. They will probably join in. Television is often a fascinating object to the new puppy, however, there are some puppies who are afraid of television. If you have one fearful, it is time to try and train them NOT to be fearful. Of all things, your television is not something you want your dog to be afraid of.
Now here is one kind of a strange object to puppies, "ice cubes." There is just something mysterious about ice cubes to most puppies. They are cold and slippery and even edible. Ice cubes could send your new puppy into a barking frenzy until they discover they can chew on them and actually devour them fairly quickly. You want to always supervise your puppy around ice cubes. They can swallow them whole and the experience can be a choking hazard.
Brooms are usually very baffling to a new puppy. They may react in the same way they do to your vacuum. They might run and hide in a safe place or they might decide to stick around and just attack the weird looking thing. If you use a broom a lot, it is probably a good idea to try and get your puppy to accept it.
And what about the phone? Have you ever noticed how your puppy will tilt its head to one side almost as if to say, I am trying to figure out where that funny voice is coming from?" The voices on your phone could send a new puppy to a hiding place or a stand at attention and listen real close, perhaps it is someone wanting to talk to them mode.
The goal is to watch for negative situations you need to turn into something positive. You want your new puppy to be comfortable around a variety of common objects and situations. The last thing you want is a fearful puppy afraid of everything that moves or speaks. If simple measures do not change a fearful puppy's attitude, speak to a professional dog trainer about methods to try next. You want your puppy to be happy and accepting of new experiences.
