Getting Through the Baffling Teenage Years With Your Dog Successfully

If you thought puppy hood was a challenging time, just wait until your puppy grows into a teenager. Yes they do become teenagers just like kids. This period of time is still individual to each dog or breed of dog. Some do just fine. Others backslide on what seems to be everything you taught them in puppy hood.
Puppies become teenagers at about 8 months old and the period of time continues until he is two years old. When your puppy becomes a teenager is still dependent upon what breed and is also very individual, but as a rule of thumb, you can count on them reaching this milestone at about 8 months of age.
Some noticeable changes include:
  • they become larger and stronger
  • they might start showing some stubborn behavior
  • they might start wanting to explore outside their comfort zone
Don't make the common mistake of giving your puppy too much freedom too son. Puppies usually have an innate desire to be near you. As your puppy gets older and gains confidence he might no longer want to stay so close to you.

Here are some ways to deal with a teenager dog:
  • Start training new puppies soon after they settle into their new home with you. You need to teach them the basics of sit, down, stay, come, etc.
  • Stay consistent with training throughout the dog's life, but especially in the younger puppy years, so the dog learns who is in command and true leader of the pack (you) as well as gains a solid understanding of what he can and cannot do.
  • Positive reinforcement using nutritious and tasty food treats should always be available for successful behaviors. Be sure to break up the treats into smaller bites so you don't overfeed with treats. Use Life's Abundance Treats for best results. Try their treats from a Sampler Pack:
  • Teach self control by teaching your dog to "leave it" and "drop it."
  • Crate training has many positive effects upon your puppy. Teach that the create is a safe place to relax once house breaking is complete.Keep the crate around for the dog to continue seeing the crate as its personal den or relaxation place. Successful crate training helps keep the puppy out of many other kinds of trouble.
  • Keep practicing obedience training (basic skills) several times per week. Remember to reward your dog with tasty and nutritious treats. Most dogs find food treats the most rewarding, but some may prefer toys and playtime after training for good behavior.
  • Keep puppy safe chew toys available during the teenage years. Early teething is over, but the phase between 8 and 10 months is a time when the adult teeth settle in the jaw. Chewing continues. Provide safe chew toys and nutritious, tasty chew treats such as those offered through Life's Abundance.
  • The teenager years are even more important for you to ensure your dog is properly mentally and physically stimulated. Activities such as fetch, walks and other games, puzzle toys, food-dispensing toys even group classes are all very important at this stage of life.
If you train early and keep up with training, you will find the teenage years much easier to live through with your dog. The goal is always to work toward a well-adjusted, well mannered, happy and loving adult dog.
