The original main function of a Dutch Shepherd was to be a shepherd's dog in the countryside of the Netherlands. In the early times the Dutch used Dutch Shepherds to keep the flock away from crops. The dogs patrolled the borders of the road and the fields. The Dutch Shepherd dogs were also used to accompany the flocks on their way to common meadows, markets and ports.
On the farm these dogs kept hens away from kitchen gardens and herded cows together for milking and pulled the milk carts. They alerted farmers when strangers entered the farm yard.
On average a Dutch Shepherd weighs between 50 and 70 pounds. The height is around 22 to 25 inches tall at the withers. The breed can be distinguished as short-hair, long-hair or rough-hair.
Short hair Dutch Shepherd has a quite hard, close-fitting coat with a woolly undercoat. The ruff, breeches and tail plume are clearly visible. Short Hair version below.
Long hair Dutch Shepherd has coat all over the body that is long, straight, well fitting, harsh to the touch without curls or waves and has a woolly undercoat. They have distinct ruff and breeches and an abundantly coated tail. There is dense coat on head, ears, feet, hind legs, and below the hocks. Backsides of forelegs show a strongly developed coat, shortened length toward the feet which is the so-called feathering. No fringes at the ears. Long haired version below.
Rough hair Dutch Shepherd has dense, harsh tousled coat and a woolly, dense undercoat all over the body except the head. Upper and lower lip should be well covered with hair. Hair on skull and on cheeks is less strongly developed. Rough Hair Version below.
Personality: Loyal, reliable, alert, watchful, active, independent, intelligent and intuitive. They respond well to obedience training and work willingly together with their owners yet can deal independently with any task they are assigned. They are neither aggressive or shy. They have strong character and independence as is passed down from their herding ancestry.
