Ways to Talk Your Parents Into Allowing You to Have a Dog

One of the best ways to help a child or young adult become responsible is to allow them to have a dog. On the flip side of this is the fact that children and young adults sometimes need to prove to their parents they can take on the responsibility of owning a dog. In this article, I will give you a few tips on how to convince your parents that YOU can own a dog responsibly.

Make a plan you will carry out daily and present it to your parents. Create a list of daily tasks you will perform that include accommodations for:

• The dog's food (how you will pay for the dog's food and be sure the dog is fed properly) should be at the top of your list. You might even consider becoming a Life's Abundance Rep to start building a business that will give you a return of FREE dog food and dog supplies.
• Exercise is important for dogs and puppies. What is your time schedule for providing exercise?
• Grooming routines will have to be maintained. How do you plan to routinely groom your dog. This will depend upon what type of breed you want to obtain.
• Training: You will need to learn how to give your new puppy basic training lessons. Write out a plan of how you will accomplish this important task.

Show your parents how you plan to perhaps get up earlier to feed and walk your new dog. Can you give up some after school activities in order to come home and take care of the dog? If you can show your parents that you are able to provide time, effort and contribute to the cost of owning a dog, you have a much better chance of getting that dog.

Do some research about the breed of dog you desire to obtain. You will need to take into consideration the type of family you are in. Is your family active during summer with vacations or summer hikes? Do you live in an apartment, in the city or the country? If you live in an apartment, a toy breed might be best. If you live in the country where there is lots of room for running and playing, you could probably choose a larger breed of dog.

If you are old enough to take on a part time job to help pay for the expense of purchasing and the care afterward, go ahead and start working before you present your plan to get a dog.

Talk about the pros of owning a dog with your family:

• Owning a dog could mean more time spent as a family unit on walks, games in the back yard or games inside, training sessions the entire family can take part within.
• A dog can motivate the entire family to spend more time outdoors and to spend more time exercising.
• Do some research on how dog ownership can help people live longer and healthier lives.
• Depending on the breed you choose, you might even be safer as many dogs serve as "guard dogs" for the family.

Is Your Dog Afraid of Fireworks?

Fear when fireworks are going off is very common among dogs. Sometimes I even get afraid for a few seconds until I realize what they are. Some of them sound exactly like multiple rifles going off all at the same time. I think, has my house been attacked? Have I been shot? Your dog is probably thinking the same things.

July the 4th of course is the most notorious for the fabulous "scare you have to death" commotion/celebration. They are beautiful in the sky, but the noise is and can be extremely frightening as well as annoying.

Here are some ways to help your dog recover from the human's attempt at entertaining everyone millions of miles away from them on 4th of July:

• Does your dog just love a certain treat or meal? If so, giving he or she the treat may help distract from the fear of fireworks while they are going off.
• Know your dog's body language that tells you he is afraid or becoming stressed. Call your dog to come sit by your side when he first starts showing signs of stress of fear.

Watch Out for Poison Mushrooms in Your Back Yard

There could be a deadly plant growing in your back yard. What is it? It is poison mushrooms. But wait a minute. Maybe not. Not all wild mushrooms are poisonous.

It is estimated there are 10,000 species of mushroom worldwide. Only 50 to 100 species are known to be toxic. How can you know if what is growing in your backyard is toxic?

Toxic mushrooms in North America are said to be of the Amanita species. Best way to find out if your mushrooms are Amanita is to have them tested to see if they are of the Amanita species.

If you suspect your dog has eaten poisonous mushrooms, here are the signs to look for:

• lethargy
• staggering
• panting
• whining
• dizziness
• salivation
• vomiting
• tachycardia
• collapse

Of course you need to take your dog to the vet if these symptoms are present. The good news here is that "few deaths" are reported. There are probably more dogs poisoned by mushrooms than we will ever know as poisonous mushrooms are rarely identified as the reason for the above signs and symptoms. It is also unknown how many mushrooms a dog would need to consume before he becomes poisoned.

Your state's cooperative extension service, regional poison centers, and veterinary teaching facilities are most likely your best help in identifying poison mushrooms in your area.

Summer Is Just Around the Corner: Prepare for Your Dog Early

Warmer weather is just right around the corner for most of us (February 2019). Here is a list of things to remember as you and your dog move into summer months.

Overheating is a real problem for dogs. Every year, we read and hear of countless reports of dogs being left alone in hot vehicles. How many times do we have to have it told to us that temperatures in a car reaches life-threatening highs very quickly even if you leave the windows wide open. Rule of thumb here is NEVER leave a dog alone in a vehicle in hot weather.

What about dog heatstroke? It happens. A dog's fur is like wearing around a heavy wool coat in the summer time. It is great for colder temps, but not so great when it gets hot outside. Dogs with longer, thicker and even darker coat hair soaks up heat and sun making it easier for them to suffer from heatstroke. Brachycephalic breeds such as shih tzu, pugs and bulldogs are also at a greater risk for heatstroke because of the restrictions to their airways. If you can, allow your long haired dog to wear a short haircut in the summertime.

Pay attention to the humidity as well. Humid weather makes a dog's temperature rise.

Dogs who are hairless, white or any light color can get sun burn more easily, however, all dogs are susceptible. There are sunscreens made especially for dogs.

Watch for those hot pavements. Touch the pavement you plan to walk your dog upon and if it is hot to your hand touch, just imagine what your dog's paws feel like on the same pavement. Blisters and cuts can result when dogs walk on too hot pavements. 

You want to avoid this if you can, but if it occurs, there is an awesome product you can use and really I recommend you use it right after walks in the summer of any temperature to hopefully avoid blisters and cuts.
