Health Screening Test for Senior Pets May be Life Saving

Our dogs play, run and sleep with us. Generally we have them from cute puppyhood to well adjusted adults and on into the senior years. We are life partners with them. As senior pets we watch them slow down.

Most of this slowing down is normal aging, but what if it is not. What if there is something wrong with our senior pets causing them to slow down?

Physical exams for senior dogs can help us decide the reason or reasons for slowing down, whether or not it is normal aging or if something else is really wrong that we can help them with proper treatment.

A comprehensive physical exam is the first step for picking up clues to underlying disease at any age. it is more important in the senior years.

The senior years are different for every breed of dog. For example, a senior Chihuahua is 10 years or older and a senior giant breed is a senior at four or five years of age. At this point in time your vet may recommend biannual physical exams instead of yearly exams. Regular diagnostic tests can detect health concerns early enough to give your pet more quality life and extend life.

Common Recommended Screening Tests for Older Dogs May Include:
  • a complete blood count or CBC
  • chemistry panels
  • thyroxine screen (T4)
  • urinalysis
  • thoracic radiographs
These tests may seem unnecessary to you, but most dog professionals will tell you they are well worth the extra effort and expense. Senior dogs make great companions regardless of when they come into our life. We want to make them comfortable and keep them healthy for as long as possible. These screening tests are the first step toward early disease detection.

Be reluctant to dismiss your senior dog's behavior changes as just getting older even if he or she is getting old. These signs could be easily detected and treatable problems that will help your dog live a more quality life in their senior years as well as extend its life.

Your vet is your best friend and partner in taking care of the health of your dog. Together you can customer design a screening program to help ensure longer, healthier life.

Does Your Dog Get Isolation Distress?

Isolation distress is very common in dogs. Put yourself in your doggie's shoes and understand why. Dog experts say isolation distress is almost unbearable for puppies. I think in puppies it probably can be compared to leaving infants and toddlers alone, probably extremely "scary and distressing." Do you wonder just how long is "too long" to leave a dog or puppy alone?

What are some of the clues that your dog is experiencing isolation distress? You come home to find:

  • a barking dog
  • a dog that has been chewing on inappropriate items
  • inappropriate elimination indoors
All the above behaviors are ways your dog or puppy is coping with isolation distress in efforts to relieve their anxiety and boredom. It is not because your dog is acting out just to spite you. They are trying hard to cope with their own feelings of isolation distress. One way to relieve some of the boredom and anxiety associated with isolation distress is to provide your dog with appropriate items to chew, such as chew toys and tasty nutritious chew treats. Life's Abundance offers several high quality chews, some of these chews can even help clean their teeth as they chew. These are:

  • Samples of our most popular treats
  • Nine baked treats (three different flavors)
  • Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats
  • One Porky Puff pork chew

Of course, not all dogs find being home alone all day is stressful. One way to find out what your dog does (other than by surprise when you get home) is to use web cams and home-monitoring software to observe your dogs while you are away. You might be surprised to find them sleeping on the sofa almost all day long, which is a reassuring snapshot.

After we provide our dogs with plush beds to sleep on, dozens of chew toys and other toys to amuse them and tasty, nutritious chews to munch on, compare their lifestyle to that of being on a chain all day or even without a owner on the streets - and we can conclude we provide them with a darn good lifestyle.

Veterinary Attention vs. Treat at Home Dog Wounds

If you own a dog chances are sometime, some day, you the owner will be faced with a dog wound to treat at home or at the vet's office. How do you determine which way to go?

Remember, dog wounds are painful. Your dog may snap at you regardless of what breed it is or regardless of how this has never happened before. Handle the wounded area carefully. Best practice is to have someone else restrain the dog while you investigate the damage of the wound.

One golden rule to follow is to always consult a vet about "bite wounds" from another animal. Reason being animal teeth bites can drive bacteria deep into wounds even it is a small puncture hole. Antibiotics are usually needed any time your dog is bitten by another animal.

In addition, bite wounds from other animals warrants a rabies booster especially if bitten by a stray dog, cat or wild animal like a fox or raccoon.

A bite wound can be only the beginning of setting up a severe trauma to underlying muscles and other tissues and can even cause internal bleeding especially if your dog was grabbed or shaken during the bite.

Types of puncture wounds:
  • gunshots
  • bites from other animals
  • foreign-body puncture wounds even from small needles, stick pins, etc. lying around your house
A wound may look pin size and contain the object trapped inside. This can lead to a delay or lack of healing and local infection and/or tetanus which all requires vet care.

Any wound over an inch long that occurs in the chest or abdomen, is infected or has jagged edges requires vet care. For example, a wound of the cranial ear pinna may look clean along the edges, but because this area is full of muscular, nervous and vascular components, your dog will benefit best from vet attention. It is almost impossible to deeply clean a wound such as this without risking injury to the animal and possibly yourself.

Wounds on the face, away from the eyes, or small wounds on the limbs may do fine with home management. You can at first use hydrogen peroxide to clean these wounds, but only once, as hydrogen peroxide is irritating to tissue and can delay healing when used repeatedly. Avoid alcohol as alcohol stings and can cause a sudden snap or bite from an otherwise well behaved dog.

How to clean less than an inch long wounds with clean edges:
  1. use a warm wet washcloth to clean the wound gently and/or use hydrogen peroxide ONCE
  2. apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment
  3. if licking is a problem, use an Elizabethan collar or cone to prevent self scratching and/or more trauma
  4. you can lightly wrap the wounds, be careful with wrapping as this can also cause more trauma if done incorrectly
How to make a safe bandage:
  1. use 3 layers
  2. start with a sterile dressing square over the wound
  3. next, place two or three layers of a cotton-gauze wrapping
  4. last layer should be a stretchy wrap like PetFlex, before placing this wrap, unroll the stretch wrap to remove some of the tension and then remind it to prevent an overly tight application
  5. place 2 or 3 layers over the cotton
  6. you should be able to insert 2 fingers under all edges of the bandage, if not, you should remove the bandage and re wrap, bandages too tight can cause decreased blood flow to limb below the wrap and to the wound itself which will slow down healing
  7. it is imperative wounds receive oxygen to heal quickly and properly, change the bandage every 23 to 24 hours
  8. if the wound appears to be healing after 72 hours of bandaging, remove the bandage
  9. watch the wound for sudden changes even if you are allowing the vet to care for the wound
  10. acute redness, swelling or discomfort, discharge that is thick, foul-smelling or copious means an immediate trip to the vet
Lastly, if you are in doubt at all about how serious your dog's wounds are, seek veterinarian attention. It is always better safe than sorry.
