Dog historians are unable to pinpoint the exact origin of the Bichon Frise. As of today, many people believe the Bichon Frise has ancestors of the Barbet dog breed, a medium woolly water dog. This could be a common belief because the word Bichon comes from the word barbichon. The word barbichon is the diminutive of the word barbet. These two dogs, the Bichon Frise and Barbet also resemble each other. Now to make things sound even more complicated the Barichon dogs include several other dogs that originated in the Mediterranean area all having a similar look and personality traits. I think these dogs are adorable.
These are:
- Bichon Frise
- Bolgnese
- Coton de Tulear
- Havanese
- Maltese
Dog historians traced the Bichon Frise breed back to the 14th century. This was a time when the French sailors brought dogs home from their duties and adventures one of the Canary Islands called "Tenerife." Truth or legends down through the years tell us perhaps the Bichon Frise dogs were taken to the Canary Islands by traders using the Phoenician trade route. If this is fact, the Bichon Frise originally were born in Italy.
Some dog historians say Spanish seamen brought Bichon Frise to the Canary Islands during the 14th century and Italian sailors kept these little dogs ultimately being responsible for scattering them throughout Europe. Bichon Frise quickly became popular and cherished by nobility regardless of whether they were brought by the French or Italians.

We read in history that the Bichons were cherished in the royal courts during France's King Francis I and England's King Henry III reigns of the 16th century. King Henry II was known to carry the Bichons with him wherever he went. You could see these noble little dogs in a very special basket King Henry hung from his neck. This is much like some of the carriers we use to today to carry our precious pets.
Bichons were also favorite royal pets of the Spanish families. The painter Goya included Bichon Frise in several of his paintings.

During the reign of Napoleon III, the little Bichon Frise remained extremely popular. The dog's royal families' popularity ended for awhile yet they remained popular with organ grinders, circus performers and were sometimes used to lead the blind.
The French took hold of the Bichon Frise breed after World War I and worked to preserve it. The French adopted the Bichon Frise with an official breed standard in March of 1933. It went through several changes in name and so forth until October of 1934 the French Kennel Club admitted the first Bichon Frise to their studbooks.
Bichons Frise came to the United States in the late 1950's.
