Help Your Older Dogs Stay Happy and Healthy

The best way to confront aging in our dogs is look aging right in the face. Here are some tips to help keep them healthy and happy during the golden years.

Suddenly your dog is reluctant to enter or cross through certain places in your home. The problem could be the flooring. Does he or she sort of slide around on your current flooring in certain parts of your house. Try putting down a non-skid carpet runner in places where he seems to slide around. Aging dogs can experience pain on slippery flooring. Puppies don't seem to mind slipping and sliding around on slippery floor surfaces, but an aging dog might experience pain.

Heights, such as climbing stairs or hopping in and out of the car may also be a problem for aging dogs. If you notice your dog sort of hanging back about jumping into the car. Most likely it is due to aging and pain in the joints. Consider getting a portable ramp.

Senior dogs need regular exercise, however, moderation is key. Too much exercise can worsen aging joints, too little exercise won't support muscle development. Take regular walks to help keep dog's muscles strong and supple, prevent obesity or stimulate the appetite. Adequate exercise will also improve the dog's mood and help prevent anxiety and boredom.

Use a safe seat belt and harness when driving with your dog.

Provide protection in weather extremes. Use dog boots (if your dog will allow them) for snow and ice walks. Indoors, use fleece shirts and other garments to help keep an aging dog warmer. In the summer months consider buying your dog some shades to protect the eyes from harmful sun rays. Kiddie pools can provide some great water and cooling off play time for your senior dogs.

Consider buying a super thick orthopedic dog bed for the senior dog. A thick, warm bed provides a lot of joint support and comfort.

Add some supplements to your senior dog's diet. Supplements are especially beneficial for senior dogs. Fish Oil is widely recommended by vets for its many benefits that include:
  • healthy coat and skin
  • joint support
  • healthy eyes and brain
  • healthy heart

 Agility

The ability to move freely and comfortably is crucial to your companion animal’s well-being. Unfortunately, aching and stiff joints are often a symptom of growing old for them as well as us. And some breeds are simply more prone to these issues and need extra support.

Typical supplements treat the joint as an isolated target. This approach proves inadequate because joints are part of a complex, interdependent system. To effectively address joint health, grain-free Agility Formula supports the entire musculoskeletal system.

This formula helps maintain healthy joint cartilage and connective tissue, and to aid in the production of healthy synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. This supplement features Glucosamine, MSM, sea mussels and hyaluronic acid. Agility Formula is a holistic, multi-action joint support formula containing scientifically tested ingredients.

Glucosamine helps maintain and promote joint and connective tissue health. It has been shown to be essential in the healthy development and ongoing maintenance of connective tissue and synovial fluid. Research studies indicate that Glucosamine supports healthy joint flexibility, mobility and lubrication. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural source of organic sulfur, integral to many body functions and particularly vital to the maintenance of a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Sea mussels also contain Chondroitin Sulfate, which works in tandem with Glucosamine. And hyaluronic acid (from kollaGen II-xsTM) helps to keep cartilage strong and flexible to better cushion joints.

All of these nutrients work synergistically with the other ingredients in Agility Formula (vitamins E and C, boswellia serrata, alfalfa leaf extract, chondroitin sulfate, manganese and boron) to provide for the comprehensive joint needs of dog or cats, to help maintain the health of bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.

With no fillers or additives, Agility Formula has a delectable flavor they’ll love! Join thousands of satisfied customers, and help your companion animals lead a healthier and happier life with Agility Formula.
Senior dogs may also need a switch from dry to canned food especially if they have lost teeth. Increased moisture content is good for their kidneys. Life's Abundance distributes three great canned foods for dogs. They are:
Pork and Venison Grain Free: This one has higher protein

Tips for Administering Eye Drops or Ointment to Your Dogs

Administering eye drops or ointment to your dog can be an unpleasant experience for both of you. Eye drops and ointments are prescribed for a variety of reasons that include:
  • dry eyes
  • glaucoma
  • corneal ulcers
  • recovery from cataract surgery
  • conjunctivitis or pink eye

Dog pet owners are usually naturally a bit nervous about administering drops and medications into their best friend's eyes. It not only is difficult to aim correctly, you very often will have a wriggly dog as well. Here are some tips.

Find a way that works for you.

Technique #1: Position the dog so he or she can't back away. You can put small dogs on a table or counter top with the dog's rear against you.

For dogs who  need to stay on the floor, try straddling them with your thighs and elbows, then guide their backs into a corner so they have no way to escape.

Place  your left hand on dog's chin, angle dog's head up, rest your right hand on the dog's forehead having the applicator ready. Use the thumb of your left hand that steadies the chin, pull up dog's eyebrow (not the eye lid) and expose white of the eye, then apply drops or medication.

Technique #2: Using less restraint which means do not restrain the dog unnecessarily. Start rubbing the dog on the head (serves to let the dog know you are not going for the eyes). Gently massage area around eye being careful to not put pressure on the eye itself. Some dogs resist restraining because they learn when they are held something they most likely will not LIKE is going to happen. The scene quickly turns to more of a struggle than an easy way to give eye drops. You usually get the opposite of what you are after.

Instead, offer some food or a nutritious treat with one hand and administer the medicine with the other hand. You can also try using peanut butter smeared inside a yogurt cup held high to induce a head tilt.

Technique #3: Pull down the bottom eyelid, deposit ointment or drops on the pink tissue which is the conjunctiva sac. Avoid touching the cornea.

Technique #4: Rest your hand on dog's head. You don't want to hold the bottle above his head. Hold the bottle or tube with your thumb and forefinger and rest your pinky on the dog's forehead. Use the fingers of your other hand to hold the dog's eyelid open.

Technique #5: Use the element of surprise by bringing the bottle from behind. Move your hand along the dog's neck toward the back of the head which is often better than if you come straight at them with the bottle in hand.

Putting eye drops or medication into your dog's eye is a tricky thing. You have to get close enough to be sure the liquid or ointment gets into the eye, but not so close that you allow the applicator to make contact with the eye. Never squeeze ointment on your finger and then put it into the eye (this takes with it all the germs on your finger).

Always be prepared. Get your drops or medication ready. Take the top off before you start. Soften ointment to make it easier to spread by putting the tube under your armpit for five minutes. You can also run the ointment under warm tap water for a minute or so to make it more like a gel than a toothpaste consistency.

Incidentally if you have a dog with dry eyes, supplementing with a high quality Fish Oil supplement can "help" this condition. Click the photo below for more information and/or to purchase.

If possible have a partner or helper. One person can help support the head and body of the dog keeping it still while the other person focuses on administering the medication.

Once the deed is done and has been successful give your dog a nutritious treat. Life's Abundance distributes several tasty and nutritious treats. Try them all to see which ones work best. I will showcase their Antioxidant Health Bar. Click photo below for more information and/or to purchase.

Put Yourself in the Shoes of Your Dog and Live Happily Ever After with Them

Dog owners usually love their dogs. The problem is sometimes dog owners just don't have actual empathy for their dogs. Empathy is putting yourself in the other fellow's shoes. We sometimes have to "think" like a dog to solve dog problem behaviors or just to live happily with our dogs. It could be true that many of the "problem dog behaviors" people complain about are not really the dog's fault.

If you or someone you know keeps getting dogs that seem to always turn out "bad," chances are greater the dogs are not the true source of the problem. Show your puppy or dog a little empathy. Put yourself in their place.
Some common themes on puppies in a new home is:
  • puppy won't eat
  • puppy just lies around
  • puppy is not interested in me or family
  • puppy ran and hid under the sofa as soon as we got home
  • puppy cried all night
  • puppy peed in the middle of the floor and he was suppose to paper trained at least
Just think about this for a moment. What if you were taken from your birth place, your parents, all your siblings, familiar sounds and smells and put in a strange place you never seen before, all new people, all new smells and sounds? You might pee on the floor too! You might experience "culture shock" if taken to a foreign country. The same things happen for "some" puppies taken into new homes. For them it is like being in a "foreign country."

After awhile the culture shock wears off and puppy begins to find out this new place is just as good, if not better, in some ways than his old home. And the same would be for you if you were visiting or starting to live in a new culture or country. After you look around a bit you find out there are many good things about this new place and you settle in happily.

Like humans, dogs produce oxytocin. Oxytocin is sometimes known as the "cuddlehormone" or the "love hormone," because it is released when people snuggle up or bond socially. Dogs also have highly evolved limbic systems - more advanced than the majority of other species and comparable to humans, which enables them to experience a range of higher emotions. This system helps them to appreciate beauty and is also similar to a religious ecstacy us humans feel.

Watch your dog gazing at a sunset or absorbing the beauty of nature. All these meditative moments are caused by their limbic activity. Ever notice how your dog wants to smell and sometimes get up close with flowers and other parts of nature as you take them on nature walks. This is all part of their limbic activity.

I take nature walks around a lake almost daily. There is one happy, funny little dog who from time to time runs loose. He must live nearby. He is a very gentle dog and just takes his nature walk around this lake seemingly having the time of his life. There are ducks around the lake. When the ducks see this little dog coming, they all run as fast as they can to get into the water. Well....the dog can swim. He follows after them, swimming his way toward them, but of course can never catch them in the water. After awhile the dog gives up and comes back upon land continuing his walk around the lake, stopping to smell the flowers and conversing with other walkers. He almost looks like a human taking nature walks.

One of the most important things to know about dogs is that they are all "pack members." When you understand this aspect of a dog, you can start to understand more about what motivates him and how he thinks rather than how you think. You must enter into their pack world as well. You are Alpha. Within their dog world, there are leaders and followers. Most important though is to establish that you are the main leader of the entire pack, even if it is just you and another dog. You are still the Alpha of you both. This is because you provide food, shelter, affection and fun.

He Stares at Me Every Time I Eat!
From pitiful, longing looks to grumpy growl grumbling, dogs all over the world appear to be begging to eat the food on your plate, much to our annoyance. While he may find the smell of your food super appealing, that's not the primary take-away from this behavior. So, what is he trying to communicate? Let's put on our "pack mentality glasses." As social creatures, dogs view mealtime as a social event. As top dog, you are responsible for fairness at mealtime. But when you - and other human family members - partake, your dog feels left out. Punished even. So, in a sense, they are begging ... only they're begging for inclusion. If at mealtime, you provide them food or a healthy treat, then suddenly your dog not only feels included, they also no longer feel ostracized. Try it for yourself and see if everyone isn't happier! You might even try giving them a "special healthy meal" all their own. I suggest one of the wet meals from Life's Abundance such as:
Turkey and Shrimp in Broth
 Turkey and Shrimp

Your dog will flip for Turkey & Shrimp in Broth, a savory omelet-inspired meal featuring turkey, shrimp, eggs, red skinned potatoes, red bell peppers and cheddar cheese. And the goodness doesn’t end there! This scrumptious meal also includes …

• Broccoli
• Dried cranberries & blueberries
• Healthy avocado, flaxseed & olive oil
• Guaranteed taurine & L-Carnitine

In fact, canines can’t resist the delightful flavor of this delicious medley, seasoned with just the right amount of basil and parsley.

Every serving of this premium canned cuisine includes optimal amounts of added vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omega fatty acids, all to help maintain a healthy, happy body.

Serve as a complete and wholesome stand-alone meal or as mouth-watering topper for our premium kibble. No matter how you dish it out, Turkey & Shrimp in Broth is the perfect way to deliver powerful nutrition, canned feast style!

He Keeps Chewing Up My Shoes or Socks!
This one is so common, it's hard to find someone who hasn't experienced the heartbreak of losing a favorite pair of shoes. Sadly, many feel their dog was being vindictive and dole out a harsh punishment. First of all, canine memory works differently than it does for us. Shaking a slobbery, mangled shoe at your puppy is really going to baffle them, especially if it's been more than 20 minutes since it was destroyed. So, what are dogs trying to tell you when they chew up your shoes? This question is answered best with another question: what is the last thing you do before you leave the house for an extended period of time? You put on your shoes, right! Your dog believes - with evidence gathered basically every day - that destroying your shoes will prevent you from leaving the house (i.e., the pack). He's really not being a jerk, he's just trying to keep you where you belong ... with him! To avoid this happening, simply protect your footwear with a dog gate.
You can also leave your dog with some tasty nutritious chew treats, something like Porky Puffs, a healthy alternative to rawhide chews.
 Porky Puffs

Dogs can’t resist the rich aroma of our delicious pig snouts. Packed with high-quality protein, Porky Puffs chewable treats are non-greasy and contain no artificial preservatives or flavors. And with no artificial colors, you won’t have to worry about hard-to-remove stains in your carpet!
They are easily digestible and therefore a safe alternative to rawhide, which can cause choking, throat irritations and potentially dangerous intestinal blockages.
Since the digestive system is the first line of immune defense, treating your dog to a Porky Puff won’t put a strain on his or her health, like other highly-processed products on the market today. You’ll feel better providing a treat they’ll love, while helping to maintaining a healthy digestive system. And Porky Puffs are appropriate for dogs of all ages.
Give your sweet pup something to be truly thankful for – yummy Porky Puffs!
