Summer Dog Safety Tips

Warmer weather is just right around the corner. Special concerns during summer weather brings to mind extra ways to take care of your dogs.

Overheating is always a main concern. Dogs die from being left alone in hot vehicles more than you would think. Inside a car even with windows open presents dog owners with new challenges as the heat rises to ungodly temperatures. Never leave your dog alone in the car.

A dog's fur is great protection during cold months, but in the summer months it will feel as though they are tugging around a thick fur coat. Heatstroke occurs when dogs are out in the heat way too long. Dogs with long, thick and dark hair colors are at a greater risk for heatstroke. Do yourself and your dog a favor, keep them at least in a short summer cut, shaved down if possible. They will be so much safer and more comfortable as well. 

High humidity increases the risk for heatstroke. Watch the weather reports to avoid outside exercise during high humidity occasions. If the humidity is high outside a dog cannot cool itself off by natural means of panting.

White, or light colored dog coats and dogs that are hairless can get sunburned. In fact, any dog can suffer from sunburn. The light colored coats and hairless breeds are at higher risks. Use a sunscreen specifically made for dogs.

Teach Your Dog to Shake Hands

I think one of the most adorable things you can teach your dog is to shake hands. Dogs of all breed types usually learn this little trick easily. It is a great trick to show your friends when you meet them on walks, at training classes and family/friends get together parties.

The method I will share with you here is one among several.

Step 1: Hold out your empty hand with the palm facing up at a height close to your dog's knee level.

Step 2: Wait. Your dog will either sniff or lick your hand and may even start to scratch or paw at your hand. The exact moment your dog lifts its paw to do whatever, say: "Good Boy or Good Girl." Don't wait until the dog makes contact with your hand. Catch this just as he or she lifts their own paw. Now...quickly reward the dog with a tasty and nutritious treat.

Step 3: Keep repeating step 2 until your dog lifts his paw into your hand. Keep rewarding the dog. Now add a verbal command. Say: "shake hands" as you present your hand to be shook by the dog. 

It is as easy as that. Soon you will have dog shaking hands upon command.

Living with a Blind Dog Successfully

Dogs and humans are different in that humans rely more on their eye sight while dogs rely more on their sense of scent or smell. This is a main reason why many dog owners do not notice the first signs of blindness in their dogs.

Blindness can occur in any breed of dog and usually it is result of growing old as it is in human beings.

Dogs use their sense of smell and hearing to get around in their environment. My dog Duke is blind at 18 years of age. He has never had a health problem of any kind. He gets around quite well using his sense of smell and hearing, although his hearing is not as good as it use to be.

Some dogs become fearful or aggressive at sudden blindness. It is disorienting to them. In this article, I will discuss ways you can help improve your blind dog's quality of life.

We need to keep in mind all dogs thrive on routine. Blind dogs depend upon the routines of a house even more. Avoid changing his important landmarks for survival such as moving or rearranging his water and feed bowls. You will also need to avoid moving the furniture around a lot as this can be very disturbing to a blind dog. He or she is use to where the couch sits. If you change it often, you will risk upsetting your dog. Of course, over time, the blind dog will find the new location, but still yet, the more changes you can avoid in his environment is all the better.

Objects that may be a problem for your blind dog to locate are:

• stairs
• pools
• sharp edges

You can prevent accidents by blocking off the stairs or entrances to pools or other high risk accident areas. When you are away from home, seriously think about crating your blind dog or at least confining him to a completely safe area away from sharp pointed side tables, etc.

Doormats can help your dog find the door. Lay down gravel or wood chips along the perimeter of your yard to help prevent your blind dog from running into a fence. Use nonslip rugs or runners on slippery floors such as hardwood and tile floors.

Blind dogs still need daily exercise to stay healthy, however, being blind impairs the dog considerably. Consider providing now more than ever toys that make noise such as balls and other toys with squeaks or bells so he or she can locate toys easily. You can even attach noise-making devices to  your shoes or belt to help your dog feel more confident while on walks as this makes it easier for the blind dog to know where you are during the walk.

It is now more important to talk to your dog and keep him reassured to help reduce his anxiety and/or confusion. Be sure to always have the dog's attention before you pet him to avoid startling the dog all of a sudden with your hand touch. Advice children and strangers that your dog is blind and that they must approach to pet slowly. 

It may be necessary to teach your blind dog new commands such as:

• wait
• step up
• step down

Did You Know This About the Shih Tzu?

The Shih Tzu is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. Those of us who have lived with them are thinking right now: "And I know many reasons why."

Before they were so popular in America, they were beloved and often reverend pets in East Asia, especially China and within the Imperial Palace. Shih Tzu have a fascinating history second to NONE.

Here are some more things you probably know or maybe not......

The Shih Tzu breed are more than 1,000 years old. There are even records that show short, square, dogs existed in China as early as 1,000 B.C. These little "under the table" dogs are the ancestors of all Shih Tzu we know and love today.

Most of us associate the Shih Tzu as coming from China originally. Fact is they probably came from Tibet, which is a neighbor to China. Tibet sent these dogs (which were bigger in size) to the Chinese royalty as royal gifts. The Chinese then bred these dog gifts with Pekingese, and perhaps other small dogs, reduced their size in some situations and on down through history comes to us the Shih Tzu as we know today.

Lions were favored greatly by the Chinese. It is not surprising the Chinese nick named their Shih Tzu, "Lion dogs." In fact, the Mandarian phrase Shih Tzu translates to little lion, and Shih Tzu do resemble little lions. However, the people in Tibet most likely named them lion dogs because of the association to the Buddhist God of Learning. There is a legend attached to this name lion dog as well. The Buddhist God of Learning, according to the legend, traveled with a small lion dog that could transform into a full-sized lion. That being said, if you own several Shih Tzu, have you ever felt as though you live in one big lion's den?

Anyone familiar with Shih Tzu probably also knows they are nick-named "Chrysanthemum-Faced Dogs." This is because the hair on their faces grows in every direction.

With the death of Empress Dowager the breed almost disappeared. There was a Communist Revolution in which the Imperial Palace was burn to the ground and the Empress gave up by committing suicide. It was also said her Eunuchs fed many of her beloved Shih Tzu "glass," most likely so they would not survive in the hands of anyone else. 

However, some Shih Tzu escaped. How this happened nobody really knows, but it is written by many Shih Tzu historians there were specimens from Dowager's breeding program that escaped, maybe they had already left as the Empress gave Shih Tzu to visiting foreign guests as gifts. Yet....when she died her world-renown breeding program of Shih Tzu, Pekingese and other small dogs as well fell apart. It was as if the Shih Tzu breed would just die out and never be again. It is truly a miracle of God some of these guys did survive.

Due to all the horrible events that happened to the Shih Tzu, every Shih Tzu today can trace their roots back to one of 14 surviving dogs. These dogs were 7 males and 7 females. These were used to rebuild the Shih Tzu breed.

High ranking military people brought Shih Tzu to the United States after which they were first imported to England from China. The English sent Shih Tzu to many countries in Europe. American soldiers stationed in European countries took Shih Tzu back to the United States in the 1940's and 1950s. 

Famous Celebrity and Royal people who have owned Shih Tzu are:

• Bill Gates
• Rebecca Mader
• Susie Essman
• Geri Halliwell
• Nicole Ritchie

There are various theories of the exact origins of today's Shih Tzu. One of those theories is that the ShihTzu was a cross between the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso. The Lhasa Apso lived in Tibet and were given by the Dalai Lama to Chinese emperors. Some of these dogs bred down to Shih Tzu were so small that could be carried in the sleeves on their owners.

Shih Tzu are glamorous, sweet faced, and also very sporty. Beneath all the beautiful hair is a muscular, agile body that performs well in agility. Shih Tzu are well known for winning agility competitions.
