Learn to Tube Feed Puppies

It is not difficult to learn the correct tube feeding procedure. Purchase the tube feeder through your veterinarian, who will be able to equip you with the correct diameter catheter and syringe size for your puppy. Sterilize both catheter and syringe between early feedings. The syringe will have graduated markings on the side to record accurate intake. You will need a bowl or large measuring cup for warm water, a candy thermometer and a nontoxic indelible pen or dull knife.
Collage of Nine Dogs
1. Place water heated to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the bowl or measuring cup.

2. Heat the formula separately (also to 100 degrees Fahrenheit) using the candy thermometer to regulate the temperatures of both liquids.

3. Put the thermometer, syringe, catheter and warmed formula into the bowl of water for transport to the puppy.

Each puppy should be measured for feeding. Correct measurement is crucial to the puppy’s well-being.

1. Lay each puppy flat on it side on a towel.

2. Measure the catheter from the rounded tip held at a point just behind the puppy’s last rib, along the side of the chest and throat, to just in front of the  puppy’s muzzle.

3. Mark the spot of the puppy’s muzzle on the catheter with the pen or dull knife.

If you get the catheter too short, the formula may be aspirated by the puppy. If you introduce a catheter too long it can puncture through the newborn puppy's delicate stomach wall. Have your vet walk you through the procedure.

If the end of the catheter is too wide to allow attachment to the syringe, sever the catheter directly behind the beginning of the flute to allow secure attachment to the syringe. Now that you have the syringe attached, place the catheter end into the warmed formula and withdraw the syringe from the plunger. Fill the syringe a few milliliters over the amount directed by your vet. Keep the catheter tip pointed downward, preventing air from getting in.

1. Place the puppy on a towel in your lap, head elevated in a slightly inclined position. Wrap one hand around the back of the puppy’s head, palm against the back of the skull.

2. Stroke the puppy with your thumb and opposing fingers on each side of the muzzle by the lip corners. The puppy should respond by opening its mouth.

3. Always keep the syringe elevated and the catheter end pointing downward.

4. You want very small amounts of formula to slowly drip from the catheter’s tip, preventing air from getting in.

5. Directly and gently introduce the tube through the front of the  puppy’s mouth. Never force a catheter down a puppy’s throat. Never insert at an angle.

6. The  puppy may at first struggle at the catheter’s introduction. Do not push if the catheter does not slip easily down the esophagus. Withdraw the catheter and try again. If the puppy struggles against the introduction of the catheter, gently apply a small amount of steady pressure to the catheter against the puppy’s resistance; the puppy should reflexively swallow. The passage should suddenly open and the tube should slide down easily.

7. The catheter is in correct position when the mark you made is just slightly beyond the tip of the puppy’s muzzle.

8. Slowly depress the syringe plunger to begin feeding.

9. Never feed a  puppy until its abdomen is distended and hard. If the  puppy’s stomach remains flaccid, you have not fed enough. Feed half the formula, and then burp the puppy.

10. Be sure to have your vet walk you through the correct procedure for tube feeding before you try this yourself.

Fish Oil is necessary for pets just the same as for humans.

Life's Abundance Fish Oil

Not All Pet Fish Oils are Created Equal

Regular supplementation of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil can help support your companion animal’s healthy skin, coat, heart, brain eyes and joints. However, numerous supplements on the shelves today do not contain the optimal concentration of fish oil. In addition, many of these supplements are not tested by an independent laboratory to ensure purity and safety.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil is Better

Our fish oils contain at least 30% EPA and DHA, an ideal concentration for the overall health of your dog or cat. The oil is in a triglyceride form, which is highly bioavailable and without added flavors so it has a natural taste that dogs and cats love.

Our liquid fish oil supplements are effortless to feed compared to gel capsules, which can be difficult to swallow and messy when rejected. The 2-oz. bottle has an easy-to-measure dropper and the 8-oz. bottle has an easy-to-use cup. (A triglyceride fish oil will not have any effect on the plastic dropper or measuring cup.)

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil offers outstanding value. For example, it cost only $.18 a day for a ten-pound cat and only $.37 a day for a 40-lb. dog on Autoship.

Dependable Quality

In its unpurified form, fish oil contains many environmental contaminants, some of which can be harmful to your pet’s health. To purify the oil takes many steps, each one adding to the cost of manufacturing. It is important to buy your fish oil from a company that not only says it purifies the oil, but one that is willing to share the test results from every batch made. It’s the surest way to know what you’re feeding is perfectly safe.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets are made in a human pharmaceutical facility … the same place as our Fish Oil for people. They are highly concentrated and ultra-pure. Like our Fish Oil for people, each bottle receives a nitrogen flush to remove oxygen from the bottle before it is sealed for ultra freshness. Plus, Ultra-Pure Fish Oils meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry for quality assurance. In fact, each batch of Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets is tested by an independent third-party organization (IFOS) and the results are posted right here so you can see the quality, concentration and purity that Ultra-Pure Fish Oil supplements offer.

Learning to Recognize Canine Aggressive Behaviors

Any breed of dog can exhibit aggressive behaviors. Do you understand what it means if a dog bares its teeth at you? Is your dog warning you to back off or is your dog simply smiling? If your dog suddenly snaps at you – is this a failed bite or a warning that a bite might be coming next? The truth is these are typically aggressive behaviors that can range from visual warnings to postural or symbolic threats. Every dog owner needs to learn these subtle or not so subtle warnings of aggression, whether it be with a Shih Tzu or a Pit Bull. Any dog breed can exhibit aggression.
Collage of Nine Dogs

Dog aggression is often meant primarily not to harm so much as to alter the behavior of another creature, human or animal. Dogs communicate their aggressive intentions through changes in expression, posturing, and maneuvering, some so subtle as to be easily missed or misunderstood by a passerby or even the owner. A dog’s communication system is quite different from a human’s communication system. It is important that every dog owner, whether it be a Shih Tzu or a Pit Bull, or a tiny teacup poodle, learn the dog’s basic communication system expressing aggression.

The actual bite is often preceded by several aggressive responses and warnings. These might include staring, growling, tensing up, and walking stiffly. No one, however, would misinterpret the savage attack of a child by a Pit Bull, as anything other than pure aggression and most people would also interpret the attack as the dog being absolutely uncontrollably vicious. In a breed such as the Shih Tzu, one does not normally see such types of viciousness, however, as with all canines, it is possible. All canines are related to the wolf and even though humans have domesticated them extremely well they can still from time to time exhibit those wolf like behaviors.

Aggression may develop gradually in a pup as it matures. Play growling and nipping by puppies  may seem harmless, but they often represent warning signals of what can be possible later on. Growling and nipping in puppies needs to be handled immediately and eradicated. The mouth of a puppy should never be allowed on human skin regardless of the activity. One possible way of handling a mouthing puppy on human skin is to immediately close the mouth of the puppy and hold it tight while saying sternly to the puppy – NO BITE.

All puppies are prone to want to chew. They are teething and this is a very normal behavior, however, when it is transferred to human skin, it is not normal and not acceptable. It can be solved if caught in the early stages assuming there are no other emotional problems occurring with the puppy. You can also quickly put a chewable object in the mouth of the mouthing  puppy.

I suggest using tasty and nutritious chew treats to substitute for mouthing behavior or to place in the puppy's mouth when they exhibit mouthing or biting behaviors. It could be puppy does just need to chew by instinct. Life's Abundance offers several options in safe and nutritious chew treats for puppies and dogs. Buffalo Bully Sticks is one great choice. These chew treats help remove tartar from the teeth as the dog chews on them.

The Mysterious and Charismatic Shih Tzu Companion

What sets the Shih Tzu apart from other breeds? The Shih Tzu is mysterious and charismatic. Its charm, self confidence and alert countenance is certainly very alluring. The Shih Tzu is highly intelligent. The Shih Tzu’s outgoing personality, big eyes with that warm and trusting expression is so hard to resist. Is a Shih Tzu going to be the right dog for you?
Shihtzu (cropped)

First of all, the Shih Tzu want to be with their people more than anything else in their lives. They do not do well in lonely kennels or when left alone for long periods of time. They have been bred for centuries to be a quintessential companion, always at your side, always in your presence craving love and attention.

If you sit down, your companion will want to immediately sit with you or an even better spot in the Shih Tzu’s mind, would be to jump into your lap and lavish you with kisses. He or she will want you to pet and snuggle him.

If you are eating, your Shih Tzu will either beg you for a bite or sit waiting patiently until you give him a bite. In essence, if you want a constant loving companion by your side at all times, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you.

If you have lots of time to stay home or are able to take your Shih Tzu along wherever you go, he or she is probably right for you. By lots of time, I mean especially enough time to groom, socialize and exercise. The lifespan of a Shih Tzu is typically 11 to 15 years.

Shih Tzu are usually active, busy, curious and creative. You will need a variety of toys to help keep the his or her mind occupied. You will need a fenced-in yard or an area where you are able to walk your Shih Tzu for exercise.

Shih Tzu are very good natured, but also very vivacious. Shih Tzu have a good sense of humor and would rather clown around than to be serious. Always keep in mind that Shih Tzu were bred to be ornamental or decorative pieces to have around, not for any particular work purpose. A Shih Tzu thinks just their presence is enough and anyone should be pleased to just be in their presence. They are proud and arrogant with a slight stubborn streak. A Shih Tzu has a mind of its own.

The Shih Tzu is a palace-dweller. For thousands of years the Shih Tzu had addresses in such places as imperial palaces, chez Dalai Lama, and with top political figures and dignitaries homes. It was a status symbol of wealth and dignity to own a Shih Tzu. To your small Shih Tzu companion, your safe and cozy home is its palace. Give your Shih Tzu a comfortable place to sleep (and I might add, the Shih Tzu discovers quite quickly that “your pillow” is the most comfortable spot to sleep), excellent care, high quality food and a loving family. Your Shih Tzu could not be happier. Although their stubborn streak may appear from time to time, the Shih Tzu can be trained quite successfully. Just use consistency and patience with your training lessons.

The Shih Tzu is strictly a house pet. He or she cannot tolerate harsh weather, either too cold or too hot, especially the heat. They need good ventilation, fresh air and a cool, protected area in warmer climates.

Shih Tzu require careful daily grooming. Most of the hair that is shed from a Shih Tzu’s coat will end up in the brush if you brush daily. They do very little shedding elsewhere. Shih Tzu are also less allergenic than most other breeds, which makes the Shih Tzu an ideal companion for adults or children who suffer from allergies and cannot house other types of pets.

I highly recommend the Life's Abundance Dog Grooming products. You will find if you use them all on a regular basis, they produce the layering effect intensifying the fresh fragrance you will experience long after the groom, and most likely every day in between grooms which should be about every two weeks. Brush daily and use the Mist spray to freshen up the coat, skin and fresh scent.

Types of Dog Aggression

In this article I will discuss 4 types of dog aggression that could be a warning sign to the owner that his Dog is in need of professional help.
Collage of Nine Dogs

Four types of dog aggression are:

1. Dominance Aggression Toward People
2. Interdog Dominance Aggression
3. Fear Aggression
4. Territorial Aggression

Dominance aggression toward people: Dominance is the driving force behind all canine aggression. Without dominance dogs would not be able to stand up for themselves. Even a Shih Tzu with a submissive type temperament will have a small amount of dominance behaviors, enough to warn intruders off a favorite food, toy or circumstance.

Protection of the dog's valued assets can be virtually the only sign of dominance. An aggressive response by a dominant dog may also occur when the dog is prevented from doing something it wants to do, in response to manipulations around the head and neck or when the dog is disciplined.

Different dogs have different priorities with regards to what will “tick them off.” Dominance aggression is also dependent upon the time, place and circumstance. Dominant dogs are not likely to become aggressive toward the person he perceives as his leader. Dominance aggression is the primary way dogs  establishes their hierarchical structure and relationships with each other. Therefore, some dominance aggression in dogs is to be expected.

Inter dog dominance aggression: This is a dog that constantly picks fights with other dogs. The subordinate dog defers to a dominant dog by averting his eyes; holding the head low, body hunkered down, tail tucked or held low, which is the canine equivalent of waving a white flag. Treatment of aggression between dogs is not easy. You can, however, keep your interdog dominant dog on lead when he is likely to be confronted with other dogs. Seek professional help if your dog continually exhibits this type of aggression.

Fear aggression: Fearful and insecure dogs may exhibit aggression whenever they feel threatened. Often there has been a point in these dogs’ lives when they were exposed to some unpleasant experience involving a person or another dog. Many dogs from rescues, pet shops or puppy mills may acquire fear aggression. A dog purchased from a reputable breeder and then mistreated by new owners can also acquire fear aggression. Fear aggression involving people are often men and children, and almost always strangers. Professional help is often needed for this type of dog and most often the cause for the fear aggression can be ascertained.

Territorial aggression:
Some dogs' aggressiveness to strangers and other dogs occurs when they are approached within their own space or territory. The territory can be the owner’s home and property. They will bark and otherwise attempt to intimidate intruders until such time as it is clear that the visitor is welcome by the owners.

One very positive side of dog aggression is that a good guard dog is better than any alarm system. A house with a dog is far less likely to get burglarized. Many times the house with the dog or dogs remains unmolested. Just having a dog with you as you walk is a deterrent for many would-be attackers.

Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviors in Dogs

The same tensions that occur in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder occur in dogs. Arising out of stress and conflict the obsessive-compulsive behaviors have some soothing effects on mood. Prevention of dogs from engaging in their particular compulsions can create anxiety in its own right.
Collage of Nine Dogs

There are two factors that seem to be necessary for the development of compulsive behaviors in dogs. Obsessive-compulsive behaviors are more often seen in the larger breed of dogs.

1.Genetic predisposition
2.Environmental stress that will trigger the expression of the behavior.

The stress can either be a sudden type of high-grade stress or a less severe long-standing pressure that causes a sudden or gradual onset of the condition. The behavior pattern that emerges will depend on the particular breed. In general, long haired large breeds of dogs may over groom, herding breeds may chase or hoard and a pure predatory breed may bite, mouth or chase objects. In comparison to human obsessive-compulsive behaviors, a human may over groom by applying their lipstick over and over or continually rearranging their hair or even the hand washing ritual with the washing of the hands over and over again.

All the behaviors performed by compulsive canines are essentially normal behaviors. They are just performed over and over again and out of context. The same occurs with humans. There is nothing wrong with washing your hands repeatedly, but if you wash your hands several hundred times a day you have a problem. Psychiatrists treat the human problems on a case-by case basis. Veterinarians remain divided regarding the significance of canine overly expressed behaviors.

One of the big breakthroughs of canine obsessive-compulsive disorders came with the fairly wide acceptance in human medicine of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. These disorders are of a compulsive nature and have certain causal and physiological features in common. Basically, humans no longer have to be a hand washer, hoarder, or checker to have OCD relating to concerns over personal safety. Instead a more general description involving other repetitive behaviors as well is the most current theory. If susceptible humans under various forms of stress react by performing various compulsive behaviors related to their own species such as grooming, exercising, gathering, hunting, dogs are probably doing the same. Dogs are self-groomers, predators and imbibers, which are a few of their naturalistic behaviors that become obsessive with them. For example, when stressed, a dog may begin to groom themselves excessively, or they may drink water excessively.

Lick granuloma in the canine is equivalent to hand washing in the human. Affected dogs lick their wrists or hocks excessively, over-cleaning or over grooming themselves until the skin in these regions is ulcerated. For years, no one knew why dogs engaged in this pointless, mindless behavior. Now, veterinarians are seeing the OCD link and with this understanding are able to treat the condition much more effectively. Lick granuloma primarily affects larger breeds of dogs such as Labradors, golden retrievers, Great Danes and Dobermans. Individual susceptibility and environmental influences are also required for the full expression of the behavior. Affected animals are usually anxious, sensitive, and high-strung and may give an impression of a generalized anxiety disorder. Environmental factors include various stresses and conflict situations, including separation anxiety or boredom.

Often, the continual licking of one spot will cause irritation and a hot spot. For the healing of that area use Life's Abundance Soothing Mist:

Does Your Dog Eat Its Own Stool?

One of the most unpleasant aspects of dog breeding or owning a dog is one who takes to eating its stool. The official name for this practice is “coprophagy.” It is one of the unsolved mysteries in the dog world. However, there are several theories.

Airedale-terrier-charles14m

Some people say nutritional deficiencies. Feed a high quality diet such as the formulas offered through Life's Abundance. Include the Wellness Supplement. In fact, you save money by purchasing the Life's Abundance System which includes the food and the Wellness Supplement:

All Life Stage Dog Food System
All Life Stage System

Every dog has unique nutritional needs which can be affected by life stage (puppy, adult or senior), differences in personality (high-strung or laid-back), living conditions (sole “child” or one of many in the household), environmental factors and activity level. Our Nutritional System unites All Life Stage Dog Food with Wellness Food Supplements in a single purpose – to provide your dog with excellent nutrition, every single day.

Not only can you help meet your dog’s unique dietary requirements, you can take advantage of the savings offered by purchasing our Nutritional System, too.

Give your dog the full-spectrum nutrition offered by the superior combination of our premium food and nourishing supplement … it’s everything canines need to thrive!

Other theories are if your dog gulps its food, it will pass through them not entirely digested and they will find it still partially enticing to eat. Others believe the habit is purely a vice or is psychological, a result of a nervous condition or insecurity.

Another theory is that the dog or the dog is cleaning up after itself because of fear of punishment or as the mother cleaned up after them when they were puppies. Some people think boredom is the cause.

The most logical of all explanations and one I go back to with my own dog is a dietary deficiency. Some have said the deficiency is of dietary enzymes.

Many puppies will outgrow the problem.

The Shih Tzu is a Little Dog With a Big Story to Tell

Few dog breeds have such a well-documented and exciting history as the Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu’s entire history is steeped in legends, myths and mystery. However, we have fossil records that tell us the brachycephalic (short-skulled, short-nosed, flat-faced) dog breeds, which include the Shih Tzu, Pug, and Pekingese originated in Central Asia. In addition, we also have written history and legends to help us sort of piece together the last 3,000 plus years of the Shih Tzu’s history. There are meticulously maintained Shih Tzu breeding records and pedigrees for more than 50 years as well.
Shihtzu (cropped)

Many historians believe the Asian dog breeds originated in Tibet and reached China as early as 1,400 years ago. The Chinese traded silk in exchange for pet dogs along the Great Wall of China. The Dalai Lamas also gave “holy dogs” to the Chinese imperial courts as diplomatic gifts and tributes during the Manchu dynasty (1644-1911). In literature the Shih Tzu is mentioned by name in the late fourteenth century.

In China breeding and raising Shih Tzu were the responsibility of the eunuchs of the imperial court. Eunuchs who produced the best dogs were rewarded with gifts. Competition between the eunuchs to produce and raise the most attractive Shih Tzu was fierce. The best Shih Tzu specimens were painted in the imperial dog books and tapestries.

The Shih Tzu was considered to bring good luck. These regal little Shih Tzu followed on the heels of emperors and empresses. If you have ever owned a Shih Tzu, you will find one of their favorite activities is following around after you and right on the heels of your feet is where they try to ride. Shih Tzu think they should make each and every step you make. I have one Shih Tzu at the present time, Duke, by name, who tries to walk with me in between my feet. It is quite amusing.

It was against the law to sell any of the royal dogs in China during the Manchu dynasty. The punishment was death.

As war dominated the political picture in Asia the “Lion Dogs” was added to the list of tragic casualties. By 1884 the American Kennel Club was founded and was registering thousands of dogs. There were no Shih Tzu among them.

In 1908 the thirteenth Dalai Lama gave the Empress Dowager of China some Shih Tzu-type dogs. The Empress fell passionately in love with these little dogs. She instructed the court eunuchs to maintain a breeding program for many years. Although the Empress Dowager was noted to be a cruel dictator she had a soft spot in her heart for the little Shih Tzu. The Empress Dowager was the person who most influenced the development of the Shih Tzu. At her death in 1908, some of the imperial palace Shih Tzu were sold to wealthy individuals or given as gifts to foreign dignitaries an visitors.

It is questionable as to how many of these survived as it has been noted some of the eunuchs fed the Imperial Palace Shih Tzu glass to keep them from surviving. They were so possessive of their Imperial Palace bloodlines, this was the only way they could think of to keep others from gaining access to their secrets.

The Shih Tzu, a little dog with a big story to tell has much, much more to say.

Your Shih Tzu will respond well to the layering effect of using the Life's Abundance Dog Grooming products. Each product is designed to enhance the properties of the other. The result is an intensified long lasting fresh scent. Use the Mist spray in between grooms and your shih tzu will always smell pleasantly refreshing.

The Tiny Playful Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are usually tiny dogs. They come in many different colors and markings. They can have either long or short coats. The one below is of course an example of a chocolate long haired Chihuahua. Just beautiful in my opinion, but I have seen beautiful short coats and tiny little things that are so cute bouncing all over the place. They are a very popular breed of dog and easy to keep in small quarters.

All Chihuahuas have large stand up tall ears that make them look as if they are always on the alert. They have huge moist eyes that can just melt your heart. They are a little bitty dog with huge personalities. Inside each Chihuahua resides a miniature queen or king ready to rule their kingdoms. They have to be taught what is acceptable in the human kingdom. They are intelligent and enthusiastic and learn quickly under the right circumstances without extensive training.

The legends and history of our present day Chihuahua are rich in tales of their ancestors. He or she is described as a popular pet and a religious necessity. They possess terrier-like qualities, and are good with families if the children are gentle and patient with them. They require very little exercise due to their small size and can get enough exercise just romping around in your living room. They also make good city dogs, but can be sensitive to cold temperatures.  He thrives well in rural environments because of his hardiness.

The Chihuahua breed derives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua where the earliest specimens were found. Their pictures can be seen in ancient paintings in Mexico.

He is clannish preferring companions of his own breed.

It is assumed the modern Chihuahua results from a cross of the Techichi with the small hairless dogs brought from Asia to Alaska over the land bridge that is now the Bering Strait. (source: American Kennel Club)

Since this is very apparently a small breed dog, you should start your Chihuahua puppy on the Life's Abundance Small/Medium Breed Puppy System:

Dogs with Dry Eyes

Did you know dogs can suffer from “dry eye” just like people can? Dry eye occurs sometimes when the glands of the eyes do not produce enough tears. The production of tears is necessary to keep the eyes lubricated and healthy. Without this natural tear production, “dry eyes” can occur in the dogs very similar to people’s dry eye conditions. Dry eye problems in dogs can be treated successfully in most cases depending upon the cause. The condition is called “keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS for short) develops from a dysfunction or an underdevelopment of the lacrimal glands. The lacrimal glands are tissue that produces the aqueous portion of tears. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is very common in dogs. The dry eye condition is not only seen in the Shih Tzu. In fact, it is more common in English bulldogs, Cocker spaniels and pugs. The condition is extremely rare in cats.

Due to the fact that KCS can be difficult to diagnose, you probably should see a veterinarian whenever your dogs eyes become reddened. Reddened eyes in your dog does not necessarily mean he or she has keratoconjuctivitis sicca. Red eyes is usually the first noticeable symptom, however, red eyes can also be a symptom of other conditions such as ulceration or glaucoma. Another symptom characteristic to KCS is sometimes a thick, ropy, green discharge.

Vets typically perform at least three procedures to diagnose eye problems. The procedures include:

• A fluorescein: A stain applied to the surface of the eye to reveal corneal ulcers
• Measuring the pressure inside the eye is used to detect glaucoma (an increase in intraocular pressure) or inflammation (which results from decreased pressure)
• A Schirmer tear test: Helps to determine if the eye is producing enough tears

When using the Schirmer tear test, if the strip stays relatively dry, KCS is the likely diagnosis.

What are the causes of KCS?

KCS can be caused by many different factors, three of the most common include:

• Immune system destruction
• Congenital defects
• Side effects from drugs

When KCS is caused by autoimmune conditions, topically applied immune-modulating drugs can help stimulate tear production. You will need to apply tear replacement ointment several times a day to keep the dog's eyes lubricated.

If KCS is caused by drug side effects, such as the use of sulfa drugs, the dry eye condition may not be correctable.

If KCS is caused from a congenital defect in which the lacrimal glands do not develop fully and are smaller than normal, drugs that stimulate tear production may not help, since there is not much tissue available to stimulate. The congenital defects causing KCS is often seen in Yorkshire terriers rather than other dog breeds.

There is a remedy for those dogs affected by a congenital defect. In the case of the underdeveloped lacrimal glands, an effective treatment is a surgical procedure called “parotid duct transposition.” The procedure is usually quite successful.

What are Omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3’s belong to a group of fatty acids known as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are three important Omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in fish, while ALA is found only in plant foods such as flaxseed meal. EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids can only be made in a limited capacity in dogs and are even more poorly synthesized in cats. Therefore, supplementing your pet’s diet with these nutrients can significantly change their levels of health-promoting Omega-3’s.

What do omega-3 fatty acids do for the body?

The Omega-3’s EPA and DHA are recognized for their health benefits in all life stages. They are important building blocks for every cell in the body, which requires these crucial components to grow, develop and maintain health. These fatty acids are an integral part of cell membranes and are precursors of several important cellular messengers.

What is the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids?

Fish oil is the richest source for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Cold-water fish, like anchovies, sardines and mackerel, are considered the some of the best sources for these essential fatty acids.

What fish do you use in Omega-3 Ultra-Pure Fish Oils for pets?

We use anchovies and/or sardines.

Why should I give my dog or cat a fish oil supplement?

In general, pet foods contain more omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids. To promote a healthier fatty acid profile, it is advisable to supplement with omega-3 fatty acids.

What are the health benefits associated with taking omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil?

Regular supplementation of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil can help support your dog or cats healthy:

  • Skin
  • Coat
  • Heart
  • Brain
  • Eyes
  • Joints
Why does purity matter with regard to fish oil?

Unfortunately, pollution has affected the water quality of all of our oceans. The contaminants in our waters include toxins like mercury, PCB’s, arsenic, lead and cadmium. Consequently, many fish now contain these undesirable elements. That is why it is very important to choose a fish oil that goes beyond molecular distillation. Molecular distillation is a process that concentrates and purifies the fish oil. Ultra-Pure Fish Oil goes through additional processes to extract harmful toxins. It is also important to select a fish oil product that is tested for concentration, toxicity and safety by an independent third party. Supplementing your pet’s diet with a first rate fish oil supplement like Ultra-Pure Fish Oil allows you to safely give the additional Omega-3 fatty acids your pet needs.

What makes Ultra-Pure Fish Oil better?

Ultra-Pure Fish Oils contain an ideal concentration (at least 30% EPA and DHA) for the overall health of your dog or cat. The oil is in a triglyceride form, which is highly bioavailable for animals and we do not add any flavors, so it has a natural taste. Our liquid fish oil supplements are effortless to feed compared to gel capsules, which can be difficult to swallow and messy when rejected. Plus, Ultra-Pure Fish Oil offers pet parents outstanding value. Finally, Ultra-Pure Fish Oil is consistently awarded an IFOS 5-Star rating for purity, concentration and freshness. Because Fish Oil for Pets is ultra-pure, you can feel confident you are feeding your pet one of the purest fish oils available.

What is IFOS and what does a “5-Star Rating” mean?

IIFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) is a division of Nutrasource Diagnostics, Inc., that provides independent, third-party testing for our Omega-3 Ultra-Pure Fish Oil Supplements for Cats and Dogs. IFOS testing judges the quality, purity and concentration of fish oil, based upon the international standards established by the World Health Organization and the Council for Responsible Nutrition. Our rating lets you know that Ultra-Pure Fish Oil is of the highest quality available on the market today – there is no better rating than a 5-Star.

Do you guarantee freshness and purity?

Yes. When you order Ultra-Pure Fish Oil, we promise to deliver the highest-quality products in excellent condition, right to your front door. If for any reason your purchase does not meet with your satisfaction, we will gladly replace the product or refund your money (excluding delivery charges). For detailed information on our return policy, please see the invoice included in your shipment.

What’s the best way to store Ultra-Pure Fish Oil?

After opening, store in the refrigerator.

How long does Ultra-Pure Fish Oil stay fresh?

Use within three months of opening.

Will Ultra-Pure Fish Oil react with the plastic cup or dropper?

No it will not. Ultra-Pure fish oil for pets is a triglyceride form of oil and it will not affect the plastic in any way.
