Brushing your dog's coat or hair is the foundation to keeping your dog's hair healthy and beautiful. Without proper and regular brushing, clipping and bathing won’t give your dog a good looking body of hair.
Dogs can have different types of hair. The way you brush your dog's hair will depend a lot on the type it was born with.
Types of Dog Hair:
1. Double coats.
2. Curly Coats.
3. Silky Coats.
Assemble your tools: Prepare your work space by assembling your tools before you take your dog to the brushing work space. Your dog's hair type will determine the type of tools you will need.
If your dog has a double coat, you will need a slicker brush or pin brush and a wide-toothed comb. Brush the entire body with the slicker brush or pin brush first. Then go over the entire body with the wide-toothed comb.
Take sections of the dog's hair and part the hair so you can see the skin underneath. Comb out the undercoat, pulling the brush outward from the skin. Hold the brush vertically. Insert the bristles or pins into the coat as close to the skin as you can get. A short-pinned brush is best or a soft slicker brush can be used. After your brush the undercoat, go over the topcoat. Brush with the lay of the hair. For a long double coat, twice weekly brushing is necessary. You may even want to brush every day.
If your dog has a curly coat, use a slicker brush to brush through. Generally, a dog will have only a slight wave and not actually a “curly coat” as a poodle or Bichon. Put the brush deep into the hair and brush from the skin out. Separate out one small portion of the coat at a time. Turn the brush vertically to the skin and insert the pins as close to the skin as you can. Long, wavy coats might require daily brushing. Short-trimmed wavy coats do well with weekly brushing.
Dogs with long silky coats needs special care because of the fineness of the hair. Many show dogs will have the long silky coat texture. Mats can be a particular problem in areas such as the abdomen, armpits, behind the back legs, under the muzzle.
Spray one side of the silky coat lightly with a conditioner before you start brushing a dry coat to prevent breakage of the hairs. Life's Abundance makes a wonderful styling product called Bath Fresh Mist:
- For shiny, silky-soft coats
- Untangles matted hair
- Lovely kiwi-mango scent
- Made in the USA
The perfect finish to a bath or a great between-bath freshener, you’ll love the way your pet kid smells after a spritz of Bath Fresh Mist! Gentle enough for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age.
Brushing daily is best to prevent mats. Some professional groomers suggest brushing your dog's face and head first. Other professionals will suggest beginning at the tail. Whichever way you begin, work in layers and brush against the grain, removing knots or tangles one at a time. When you’ve completed brushing the dog's entire body, go over all areas with a wide-toothed comb.

How would you rate your companion animal’s skin and coat health? Does your pet have

Even though the skin is the body’s largest organ, it takes a backseat to other organs when it comes to nutrition. In fact, the nutrients eaten by your pet go directly to the other vital organs first (such as the brain, heart, lungs and liver); as a consequence, the skin often suffers. Even if you are already feeding your companion animal a high-quality, nutritionally dense food, sometimes it’s just not enough to ensure skin and coat health. In fact, problems relating to the skin and coat are much more common than you might think as they account for a significant percentage of trips to the vet.

- In addition to skin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids, this formula contains vitamin E and zinc, which help increase the effectiveness of the fatty acids.
- The vitamin A in this formula helps cells to grow and supports the naturally-occurring layer of oil on the skin, helping to keep it healthy and supple.
- This formula also contains vitamin C, which supports healthy collagen development.
- And to top it off, our new and improved Skin & Coat now contains seven different B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, d-pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and biotin), all of which work with the other nutrients in this formula to aid in the many complex chemical reactions required for healthy skin and coat.
