When Will My Puppy Grow Up?

Puppies are so adorable. It is sometimes difficult to see them grow up out of all their cuteness, yet, as pet owners we still want to know when exactly will our puppy finish growing. Knowing this fact helps us to know when to change our puppy over to adult food and when larger collars or beds will be needed. If you are a breeder, you will most likely want to know when it is safe to start breeding.
What determines the growth rate of your puppy? Growth rate is mostly determined on the type of breed. Small, medium, large and giant breeds all grow at different rates.
Small breed dogs usually finish growing before the larger breeds. They also mature sexually and emotionally sooner than larger breeds.
Proper nutrition also plays an important role in your dog's growth. If you feed a high quality dog food your small breed puppy should finish growing at about 8 to 12 months of age. You can expect the puppy to grow his adult coat and shed off the puppy hair. He or she will reach his full height and weight at this time as well.
Medium breed puppies finish growing between 8 and 12 months of age if supplied with a well balanced diet. This rule does not always apply as some medium breed puppies finish growing right at 8 months of age.
Large breed puppies obviously have a lot more growing to do when compared to small and medium breed cousins. A large breed puppy might range in weight from over 50 pounds to around 100 pounds at full adulthood. Knowing this fact helps large breed owners to realize it is going to take a little longer than 8 to 12 months to get where they are going in weight and height. They finish growing at about 10 to 16 months of age. And some large breeds continue to grow past 16 months of age.
Giant breed puppies such as the Great Danes, the Mastiffs, St. Bernards and others can reach over 200 pounds full grown.
Large and giant breeds need specially formulated diets to prevent excessive growth during the puppy period that can lead to health problems. It is wise to consult with your breeder or vet about proper nutrition.
You can often consult with the breeder of your large or giant breed to find out exactly when your dog will mature as compared to the breeder's past experiences with puppies and adults. Dogs are like people in that they are very individual in every aspect of their life. Some dogs within the same size group will take longer to mature and some will mature sooner.
Be sure to feed your puppy high quality food from puppy hood throughout adult hood. Life's Abundance offers several formulas to fit the needs of every size of breed.

Bonding With a New Puppy is Basic to Forming a Happy Human-Canine Relationship

How do you begin a positive journey toward bonding with your new puppy? Of course, every new puppy owner would like to establish strong ties with their new puppy. A strong foundation is built upon:
  • mutual trust
  • patience
  • understanding
  • fairness
  • consistency
  • and of course lots of love
One of the most important things you can do for your puppy is to spend time with he or she. Snuggle on a regular basis and talk to him. Hold puppy up close to your face and just talk to he or she like a human baby. Brush or comb his hair. Get on the floor and roll around with him. Learn to play fun games with you new puppy. Lots of positive attention is key to building a strong bond with a new puppy. Your puppy will think you are fun to be with and will work harder to please you.

Training basic commands and tricks is a great way to spend constructive skill building time with your puppy. Training sessions are also great ways to bond successfully with a new puppy. Don't forget to give lots of praise and tasty, nutritious treats for behaviors you want to reinforce. One of the best ways to show your puppy he or she has done a great job is to reward them with a tasty and nutritious treat. Try Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats:

Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.
Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised lamb and chicken.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors.
With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

Hang out with the new puppy in your back yard. Watch he or she discover his new space. Watch him chase after butterflies and smell around the yard discovering sights, flowers, and even flying birds can interest a new puppy. Just sit and soak up the peace surrounding you and your new puppy. You will probably do lots of laughing out loud as puppies can put on some great entertaining shows. As you show him he is a much valued family member or part of your world he will begin to see himself as the center of your universe and your bond with him will deepen.

Be consistent with whatever you do to make a new puppy feel part of your inner world. It is all based upon mutual trust with each other. Consistency about training and your expectations is a key aspect of this new human-canine relationship.

Warmer Weather Means More Trips to Water Activities: Tips for Taking Fido Along

Warmer weather prompts many people to head for the water swimming, boating or just hanging out on a raft. It is a great way to spend a warm, summer day. You will probably want to take along Fido. In this article I will share some tips on how to keep your beloved pet safe and happy while you are safe and happy.
Step 1: Invest in a high quality dog life vest that fits your dog properly. A properly fitted life jacket saves doggie lives by helping to prevent drowning accidents. Make sure the jacket fits snugly around dog's neck.
Step 2: Introduce your dog to water and your boat, kayak, paddle board or whatever it may be SLOWLY. If your dog is in the water for the first time, try to find a calm, warm water with a gentle sloping bank to help introduce the dog to water activities.
Encourage your dog to step into the water and walk along the bank. Then....slowly encourage him into deeper waters as you see he gets comfortable around the water. When the dog is comfortable walking into the water, encourage him to step off and swim to a toy or treat.
If your dog starts to swim, allow him to turn back to the bank where he can stand. Help him if necessary. I take a walk around a local small lake and I see a couple of dogs enjoying themselves swimming around in the lake. Most dogs can learn to swim easily. There are the exceptions, however, of dogs who never like to get into water. Do not force your dog to like the water if he continuously acts adversely.
Step 3: If you want to get your dog comfortable on a boat or some other type of water vessel always remember to make it a fun experience. Take along plenty of toys and treats for praise when he performs how you desire. Remember again if your dog does not like water, there is probably no water vessel you will be able to get him out on.
Step 4: Always watch your dog closely around water. There is always the opposite personality that won't come out of the water when called out. Some dogs will swim until exhaustion. Try to get the dog's attention upon a toy or treat if he refused to get out of the water.
Step 5: Watch that your dog does not ingest too much water as this can pose a vet emergency. A dog who ingests too much water while swimming can suffer from water intoxication which is a life-threatening condition.
Step 6: While on a boat, it is wise to keep your dog on a leash so he does not jump over the side. And...be sure the leash is not so long that he can jump over the side while you are holding onto the leash.
Step 7: Don't forget your dog will need potty breaks while on a boat or other water craft. If you are sailing for hours pick a spot on the boat or other water craft where your dog can go potty. Create a potty area with pads or artificial grass.
Step 8: Take along a portable cooler bowl to provide your beloved companion fresh water to drink.

Monitoring Your Dog and/or Puppy Water Intake is Important

How much water does your dogs and puppies need? Adult dogs need about one ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. Puppies, depending upon their age, size and activity level need more water than adult dogs.
Newborns will get enough water intake from their mother's milk. As soon as they waddle out of the whelping box from mom to explore their surroundings you need to start providing a fresh supply of water. In general a young puppy will need about one-half cup of water every two hours. You need to monitor your puppy's intake of water to be sure he or she is getting enough, but you also need to remember puppies can drink "too much water" as well.
Water intake rules change a bit during house training. Remove the water bowl at night and be consistent with the time you remove the water bowl. Remove the food and water bowl about 2 to 3 hours before bedtime.
Puppies are more prone to dehydration than adult dogs. Puppies have a greater need for water. Maintain fresh, clean water during the day for your puppy even during house training.
Here are some ways you can check for dehydration:
  • Your dog is dehydrated if the skin around its neck does not snap back after grabbing the scruff of your puppy's neck.
  • If the gums are dry or sticky, dog or puppy needs more water.
  • Press your finger against dog or puppy's gums. While you press the gums the area turns white, when you release the pressure, the area should return to a healthy pink within 2 seconds. If it takes longer than 2 seconds your puppy or dog is dehydrated.
If you notice your dog or puppy is not drinking enough water make sure the water bowl is clean and filled with fresh water. Place the water bowl near the feed bowl. Flavor his water with some bone or chicken broth. Offer ice cubes.

Dogs and puppies can drink too much water and become over hydrated. This can happen especially during playing with water or during swimming. This is a vet emergency. Here are some signs to watch for:
  • lethargy
  • nausea
  • loss of coordination
  • staggering
  • bloating
  • dilated pupils
  • excessive salivation
  • vomiting
  • pale gums
