Be Aware of Winter Dangers for Dogs and Puppies

Most of us are very much aware of the frigid winter temperatures posing danger to our companion animals. You should also be aware of the following seasonal dangers. Being alert to these things might just save your dog's life.

  1. When playing outdoors with your dog be aware that a dog's body temperature drops rapidly when exercise stops. To prevent hypothermia, keep your dog dry and moving.
  2. Many dogs love to romp and play freely in the snow off leash. Be aware that snow covers scents dogs use to navigate their surroundings. They can become easily lost even in familiar surroundings.
  3. Dogs can fall through ice in unexpected ponds. If there are these types of areas where you and your dog exercise, restrict the pet to being on leash or find a fenced in area instead.
  4. De-icing chemicals and even ice itself can lead to dry and chapped paws. Train your dog to wear boots and/or give him a warm foot bath after exposure. Spray a little of Life's Abundance Soothing Mist on the feet to avoid feet irritation.

Unfortunately, skin irritations are all too common for companion animals. That's why we offer Soothing Mist, an herbal blend created to enhance the natural health of the skin and to nourish coats. This spray features zinc and a calming blend of aloe vera gel, marigold, lavender and chamomile to help soothe and protect healthy skin and coats. Safe and effective for both dogs and cats, it's even suitable for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age. Finally, a gentle skin-care product that is also highly effective!

If you dog lives outside be sure to use plastic bowls as the tongue can stick to metal bowls. Check outside water bowls often for freezing.

Puppies are more susceptible to the cold than adult dogs. Minimize a puppy's exposure to the cold temperatures and outfit him or her with a sweater or a coat.
