Potty training your new puppy should be on day one in the new home. You need to decide just how you will accomplish this very important task. Will you potty train directly to an outside spot or will you start inside on potty pads? Your dog going outside is the ideal solution, however, potty pads can play a significant role in successful outdoor potty training.
Very young puppies will need frequent trips outside that might be a bit challenging for elderly or apartment owners. In this case, it is best to start with potty pads indoors. Another reason to limit your new puppy to indoor potty training is the fact that you need to limit your puppy's exposure outside in public places until he or she is fully vaccinated.
In this article you will read some tips of how to potty train a puppy using pads indoors.
The number one suggestion I can give you is to always "be patient" with a new puppy. Potty training can progress quickly or slowly. It all depends upon your skills and consistency plus the puppy's personality. I have heard people say, "I just could not potty train that dog." Chances are the problem was more within the trainer than the dog. All dogs can be potty trained, but not all dog owners are skilled trainers.
Points to remember about puppies:
- Puppies cannot control their bladder until they are at least 16 weeks old. Never expect a fully potty trained puppy until 16 weeks and older of age. As much as you would like for the puppy to do as you desire, it is just simply impossible. You as the trainer needs to realize this fact and be patient.
- Puppies can only hold their bladder as long as age in months plus one hour. For example, a four month old puppy can hold it for five hours. This time schedule includes during the night hours as well.
- Every breed is different. A toy breed might need more frequent potty breaks. They have smaller bladders.
- Every puppy within breeds is an individual and may take less time or more time to potty train. For example, your first puppy of the same breed might potty train very quickly, and the second puppy of the same breed even from the same parents may take longer or even less time.
Be prepared to supervise your puppy at all times. This is key to successful potty training inside or outdoors. You cannot prevent an accident unless you keep your eyes upon the puppy. Here is some help:
- Take puppy to potty pad frequently depending upon puppy's age and bladder strength. Very young puppies may require potty pad trips as often as every 15 minutes. It is better to waste a trip and have nothing happen then to witness an accident. Be prepared at all times with a tasty, nutritious treat for reinforcement of when puppy does it right.
- Use a timer if you find it hard for to remember to take puppy to the spot.
- Learn your puppy's behavior of when he or she is about to use the spot. If you see him sniffing the ground or floor, circling or whining, take him quickly to the spot.
- Invest in a long leash if you need to use one to keep puppy within your sight. You can tie it around your waist or some heavy furniture. It will all be worth it in the end.
You can use a crate. Crates are useful potty training tools. Dogs do not like to soil where they sleep. Many times, if new owners will introduce young puppies to a crate immediately upon arriving into a new home, the puppy will see the crate as its personal den and safe place. Points to remember about crates:
- Choose the appropriate size for your puppy, puppy should be able to lie down and turn around with no extra room. If you choose a crate too big, the puppy will use one end as a toilet and the other end for resting which delays potty training. Dividers can help with larger crates.
- Try to make the crate a wonderful place for your dog to dwell. If you put treats in the crate, but them at the back of the crate. You can also leave food stuffed toys in puppy's crate to help them associate crate to something pleasant.
- Always reward your puppy with treats for going into the crate. Never use a crate for punishment.
Routine and consistency on the part of the trainer is a must. Set a schedule and stick to it. Dogs love routines.
Most puppies need bathroom privileges when they wake up in the morning, after eating, after playing and after napping. Be sure you make all these times and many more in between.
Take your puppy to the spot any time they have not been for an hour or two.
Take puppy to the potty pad anytime you suspect he or she is about to go. If nothing happens, don't allow puppy to run around and play. Put him in the crate for 10 to 15 minutes, then release him and try again. Repeat these steps until puppy eliminates.
Feed your puppy on a schedule instead of free feedings. If you control the times your puppy eats, you can better control when puppy will have bowel movements and urinates.
Choose the spot for the potty pad and never put it any place else. You will confuse puppy if you move the pad from place to place. He will have accidents and it will take longer to train.
Always reward your puppy with lots of praise and a tasty, nutritious treats when he does his business correctly. Use a leash and walk the puppy to the puppy pad if he is easily distracted.
Many of the tips above can apply to outdoor training or when it is time to transition your puppy from the pad to outdoor training. Remember to always go out the same door and to the same spot outdoors. Use the same command every time. Be ready to reward with a treat. You can also move the potty pad outdoors and then eliminate the potty pad altogether once puppy learns to do his business outdoors. Move the potty pad a short distance indoors closer and closer to the door you will go out of and then continue to move the pad a short distance all the way to the final spot outdoors.
Remain calm about accidents. If they occur indoors, just clean it up. Never punish the puppy for an accident "unless" you catch them in the act. And then, just get down near your puppy's ear, clap your hands loudly at its ears and say "NO" very sternly. Then lead puppy to the correct spot and give your command. If by chance they do it correctly this time, be ready to give lavish praise and a treat.
