Like humans, dogs communicate with us using body language. In this article read about some of the things your dog might be saying to you through body language.
Relaxation expression: When dogs are expressing relaxation you might see them get up, stretch, and readily come to you.
Happy, laughing or joyful expression: Dog sticks the tongue out. A tongue out like the above picture can also convey "a great big smile," "everything is just peachy keen."
Excitement expression: An excited dog is likely to wag his tail in a fast, back-and-forth manner. His head sometimes is held up high, ears forward, mouth might be slightly open and you will see some extra sparkle in his eyes.
Playful expression: The dog might dance or jump up and down with eyes focused upon the object he wants to play with. If the object is you, the dog might be saying: "Please play with me now or please pet me now or come over here." The dog might bring you a toy. Dogs have been known to get their leash and take it to their owner saying, "let's go for a walk right now."
Dogs who are in general playful are also usually easy to train. You will be able to take advantage of his playful, happy attitude to teach basic manners like sitting or come here upon command.
Shy expression: A shy dog is one who usually is wary or unsure of new people or circumstances. They might even tuck their tail between their hind legs. If there are other dogs around them, the shy dog might use them to hide from strangers. A shy dog's tail might move slowly, never fast and furious as he or she is not quite sure what is going on in the environment and should they be cautious or what. A shy dog uses a lot of caution before approaching people or new circumstances. Their head might look as if they are trying to hide it below the level of their backs like a person might hide their head underneath a tall sweater collar to sort of escape the current situation. A dog showing shyness might have eyes a bit diverted. It is like, "I don't know if I want to get to know you or not," and give me a little time, I might let you know me." A shy dog might not even accept a tasty treat. They might bark when people approach them because they are a bit fearful.
Fearful expression: A fearful dog might hide in a kennel or somewhere in the house, under the furniture, under the bed. Fearful dogs sometimes will go to extreme lengths to avoid human contact. This happens a lot with dogs retrieved from shelters rather than reputable breeders. If a fearful dog cannot get away from humans or other dogs, he might just lie down as far away from you and other dogs as possible. The eyes might seem to protrude or be dilated in fear. An extremely fearful dog sometimes will not even look at a human. A fearful dog is more inclined to attack.
Each dog has a unique personality of its own. Take time to get to know your dogs for a happier life with them.
