The Toy Dog belongs in a class all its own. They were probably the very first dogs to become domesticated. It is primarily felt only the breeds in the American Kennel Club's Toy Group are ones thought to be real Toy dogs, however, there are a number of small dogs from other groups like the Non-Sporting and Miscellaneous and other registries that could be considered Toys. Some of those are the Bichon Frise, French Bulldogs, Lhasa Apso, Bolognese, the Dachshund and more.
Toy dogs develop differently than larger breeds and have different requirements. Proper development of a toy dog begins at birth and continues on through the period of adjustment to their new home. They have different medical needs and dietary considerations as well.
Toy dogs have been nick named "little fluff balls," "mop-heads, and even "barking bed slippers." They actually do not bark anymore than a larger dog. They are just a little more, shall we say, manipulative and perhaps even demanding somewhat like little children.
It has been noted Toy Dogs are more protective of their owners than larger breed dogs. Could this be "they do think of themselves as being children" instead of the dogs they truly are? Because of their size, owners may be the reason why toy dogs behave more like children. The owners may be a bit more protective of them while bigger dogs might act and feel as if they are more self-reliant. Owners of little toy dogs recognize the toy dog as being a bit more helpless. They do seem to develop slower than larger dog breeds. Their motor skills develop later than those of the larger breed pups. By contrast, toy dogs seem to have longer life spans than the larger dog breeds.
It is generally felt that because the Toy Dogs develop slower they should be sent to their new homes at a later age. A large breed dog may be able to go to a new home at 6 to 8 weeks, whereas, the toy dog will need stay in a breeder's home until 12 to 14 weeks or more of age.
