The Hairless and PowderPuff Varieties of Chinese Crested Have Distinct Appearance Differences

All hairless breeds have two varieties. Ones with hair and ones without hair. The full coated are called Powderpuffs.  One unique difference in the Chinese Crested and other hairless breeds is that the Chinese Crested carries the gene for long hair. All the others have a short coat.

In the hairless varieties the hair appears on the head, feet and tail referred to as crest, socks and plume.



The Chinese Crested has come a long way from its ancient past. Fans of the Chinese Crested hope more people will enjoy the company of one of the most extroverted, fascinating and intelligent toy dogs ever bred. The hairless dog is warm to the touch. It's skin is soft and smooth. It does not have the doggie odor other coated dogs carry and he or she keeps itself very clean much like a cat. Bathing the hairless variety takes only a few minutes.

The Powderpuff variety does not have a heavy seasonal molt except when it looses the puppy coat. The Powderpuff requires daily brushing and combing to help keep the coat in good condition. Of course, bathing will take a little longer than the hairless variety and grooming in general takes a little longer as you most likely will need to blow dry the Powderpuff variety.

Fans of the Chinese Crested dogs say they are quite "houndy" in character and conformation. They are often suspicious of strangers and can be aloof. They can be quite speedy at chasing rabbits and squirrels as well. If you ever get the chance to see a group of Chinese Crested dogs chasing each other, rabbits or squirrels around in a field, the sight can look like small Arab horses. It is a very beautiful sight to see with plumes flying in the wind.

One of the first Chinese Crested dogs to cross the Atlantic was "Alta" of Crest Haven. She was a bitch in whelp imported by the late Mrs. Ruth Harris in 1965. It is a sad story that her puppies did not survive. Further imports were also disappointing and fruitless. Things began to look better for the breed when the late Mrs. Majori Mooney of the Winterlea Kennels in Scotland imported Wy Ho and Starba from Mrs. Woods at that time and produced some very nice dogs over the years. Some of her dogs were "Winterlea Regal Choice," "Luke Splendid" and "Sunbelle." I just love the name Sunbelle.
