The Curly-Coated Retriever is strong, robust and agile. His coat is full of small, tight, water-resistant crisp curls. He is bred to be a multi-purpose hunting retriever working for as long as there is work to be done. He will retrieve game in the heaviest of cover and iciest of waters. Colors are black or liver.
His personality is confident, proud and smart. He is said to be a thinking person's retriever. He can be very active and loves the outdoor exercise like swimming. Don't allow him to become bored. He is good with children. Has seasonal shedding and requires occasional grooming. Weight is about 60 to 95 pounds, height is 25 to 27 inches for a male and 23 to 25 inches for a female. He should live 10 to 12 years.
The origin of the Curly-Coated Retriever is not clear, yet without a doubt he is one of the oldest of all breeds now classified as Retrievers. He is believed to have come from the 16th century English Water Spaniel, the St. John's Newfoundland, the retrieving setter and in the late 19th century, the Poodle.
He enjoys human companions and does not do well left alone without it. Be sure to engage him in early socialization and training to ensure a happy, well-adjusted Curly.
