Welcoming a new puppy into your home is filled with happiness. It can be difficult to announce the event especially if there are young children in the house. Everyone will want to pet and handle the new puppy. You will most likely want to show it off to family and friends. The arrival of a new puppy is exciting for all humans concerned, but ever wonder how the new puppy is feeling. He or she may be just a bit frightened or bewildered and not have any idea what the big fuss is all about.
If the young puppy has been separated from parents and littermates and traveled a long ways to get to the new home, he or she no doubt will be somewhat nervous. All the smells and sounds will be different. Every single face is a new and/or strange one. The new puppy is still a baby. He or she may respond quite understandably with an upset in digestion. New owners who realize these facts will treat the new arrival accordingly. Remember, first impressions even for new puppies are important ones. Set the stage for success. This experience should be managed very carefully.
Here are a few tips:
- a new puppy should spend most of its first few days in a new home in a confined place
- keep handling to a minimum
- let the puppy make the first major overtures to new friendships
- if the puppy invites cuddling allow it, if the puppy seems to want to be left alone, allow it
- allow the new puppy to sleep as much as he or she wants and don't be alarmed if that is not much or a whole lot
- if other pets are in the home, don't push them on the new puppy right away
- keep new puppy isolated for its safety and the safety of other pets, allow older pets to get acquainted with a new pet through the wire of the cage where the new puppy can feel safe
- it is especially necessary to isolate a new puppy in kennels as the new puppy may have disease that can be spread to others in the kennel....isolate the newcomer until you are sure he or she is disease free
- decide ahead of time where the new puppy is to be kept and how you will housebreak
If you need to change your new puppy's food, do it gradually.
