He has an all black double coat that is warm enough to allow the Black Russian Terriers to patrol some of the coldest habitable places on earth. During the war years many purebred animals became almost extinct in the Soviet Union, however, people still needed them.
The Black Russian Terrier was used as Military Dogs in 1958 when the first standard for them was published in "Regulations and Requirements for Training and Usage of Military Dogs." Today, they are more likely to be used guarding suburban families more than political prisoners. Their looks alone make them intimidating and dominating. They are not a good fit for novice owners. They are smart and sensitive dogs that train beautifully under a firm but loving hand.
