The Speedy and Compact Bluetick Coonhounds

They are nocturnal hunters, and named for the mottled or ticked black-and-blue pattern of the glossy coat. The small females might stand 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh 45 pounds as adults. The large male can stand 27 inches and weigh 80 pounds as an adult.

The Bluetick Coonhound is well muscled, sleek and racy. They are never chunky or clumsy. These dogs make coon hunter's music like baying, bawling, and chopping barks in a hot pursuit of their prey.

It is felt the Bluetick Coonhound descends from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne (French Staghound) and the English Foxhound.

The ideal owner likes to spend time with his hound providing plenty of activities to keep his body and mind healthy and occupied. Blueticks are athletic and hardy working dogs that need a job such as hunting, obedience or agility to stay happy. They are scent hounds lead around by their exceptional noses and prey drive.

Dog sports the Bluetick Coonhound excels in are tracking, coursing ability test, obedience and agility, night hunts, water races and treeing contests. (source: American Kennel Club)
