Train Your Dog to Take Car Rides in Comfort

Part of the fun of owning a dog is to be able to take him or her on road trips or short trips with you in the car. Unfortunately not all dogs ride in cars well. Some may whine, drool and even vomit from car sickness. Other dogs will ride happily without a problem at all.

There are ways to teach your dog to ride comfortable in the car. It is easiest to teach young puppies to ride in cars, and wise to start your new puppy riding in a car early. However, older dogs can also be trained to ride in cars happily.

You can either step by step gradually introduce your dog to the car or counter condition that changes your dog's emotional response from negative to positive.

How severely your dog reacts to riding in the car will determine where to start training. It might be a few feet from the car or longer. You first must determine the point where your dog is comfortable and relaxed then move closer and closer.

At each stage, have healthy and delicious treats, a toy or a meal waiting for times in which he shows no anxiety or fear. You can even play games with your dog along the way to make it seem like a fun thing you and he are doing together. Only move closer when your dog is completely relaxed at the current stage. A sign your dog is not ready to move closer is that he stops playing or eating. If this occurs, take a step or two backward until the dog relaxes then start again.

Remember every dog is different. It might take a few minutes for some and with others days of training. Just be patient and move toward the car at your dog's pace.

Your next steps involve adding other elements that precede the actual ride. These include:

  • sitting in the driver's seat
  • closing the doors
  • making the remote locks beep
  • buckling seat belts
  • starting radio or other music
Each step along the way requires lots of praise, fun times, and treats to reinforce the fact that "this is okay to do."

You might even toss some treats in the back seat for your dog to find once he or she is strapped in or as soon as he is in the position to go for a ride. Play some tug of war together to keep it a fun and happy time. Just don't move the car YET. Let your dog get use to the sounds of the engine with food, fun and games.

Once you get your dog to look forward to getting into the car, add the motion. Start with very short distances such as moving the car to the end of the driveway. Continue building the time spent moving in the car by short increments. Make every step of the way pleasant. If you can find a helper who will ride beside your dogs and continue playing or giving treats, this would be fabulous.

When you start traveling with your dog, choose destinations you know your dog will enjoy. You could drive to the park or the woods. Get out and allow your dog to play and explore before returning home.

If you will remain calm and patient, you will have your dog riding in the car and looking forward to the ride.

Tips to keep your dog from getting motion sickness:
  • The car's inside temperature should be warm in cold seasons and cool in warm seasons
  • Lower the windows to let some fresh air in
  • Limit your dog's food and water for a few hours before the trip
  • Ask your vet for motion sickness or anti-anxiety medicine
  • Exercise your dog about twenty minutes before your trip to decrease stress
  • Use a dog pheromones collar or spray to mimic the odor of a nursing mother dog. Pheromones mimic the odor of a nursing mother dog and can relax even an adult dog.
