How to Tell if Your Dogs are Wrestling for Fun or Are in a Knock Down, Drag Out Fight

How do you know if two dogs wrestling is just play time or actual fight to knock out time? The sounds and body language are very similar. You will hear and see:
  • growling and snarling
  • body-slamming
  • biting of each other's necks
So what do  you do? Stop an innocent period of play time or separate a vicious attack on one another?

In fact, growling, snarling, body-slamming and even bites here and there is "normal dog play." Puppies learn this type of play from their own mother and litter mates. Puppies play with their litter mates continually. It is cute to watch. You know they are not going to hurt each other. Many times they don't even have all their teeth. Wrestling to a litter of puppies is almost as good as meal times. After a good meal, they say to each other, come on now see if you can lay me down and keep me down. It is a critical time for social development among their pack team. It is good exercise and fun to watch as well.

Go on You tube and see how many views are attached to "puppies wrestling" with each other. However, as a new dog owner of more than one dog, you should try to learn the difference between innocent dog wrestling and a real knock down, drag out fight.

Here are behaviors that say it is good fun and playtime wrestling/fighting:
  • Front end down, back end in the air indicates dog body language of "let's play." The dog trying to initiate play might slap his front legs down on the ground repeatedly.
  • Big, silly open-mouthed grins indicate good fun play.
  • Bouncing movements around each other that just looks like the dogs are acting silly.
  • Exaggerated or loud continuous growling and snarling. Sometimes play growling sounds a little scarier than serious fighting.
  • Dogs or puppies keep going back for more wrestling sessions. There might be one on its back, then in a few minutes the other one might be on his back.
  • Dogs or puppies will voluntarily tell each other in the body language of falling down and exposing their bellies and allowing themselves to be caught when playing chase.
  • They take turns chasing each other.
The following behaviors are some of the signs that tell you this is not a game, but a real knock down, drag out fight:
  • Dogs get very stiff.
  • Hair on dog's upper back is raised. You might not be able to readily see this if the dog's hair is long.
  • The mouths are closed.
  • The lips are curled up.
  • You will hear a low warning growl.
  • Dog movements will be quick and efficient. There will be no bouncing around and no taking turns.
  • Ears will be pinned flat.
  • Lips will be curled back and you will hear snarling. There are no big silly smiles as if the dogs are having fun.
  • If true combat begins, hope it will be a short encounter. The loser will try to leave the area. They won't be going back for more play.
  • One dog is trying to get away from the other dog. Body language is not happy and bouncy.
  • Tails might be tucked in. This is an indication of fear. It might be just one dog with a tail tucked in or both dogs. This indicates they are not having fun, but are in a fearful battle with one another.
Of course, if you determine the wrestling match is not fun play time, you should attempt to separate the dogs from each other.
