Tips for Preventing Tear Stains

White colored dogs such as Bichon and many other white colored breeds as well as multi-colored (white with another color) will almost always at some point suffer with some tear stains.

Causes can include:

• health issues
• shape of the eye
• blocked tear-ducts
• puppy teething
• ear infection
• allergies either to food or environment

If your white coated dog suddenly develops tear staining consult first with your vet to rule out any health causes. More often than not, one of the remedies below will help you deal with tear stains.

After you rule out health conditions causing the tear staining move onto the following tips and suggestions to restore and prevent tear stains.

1. I have used Eye Envy, both liquid and powder with much success. The Powder helps to keep dissolving additional liquid that falls from the eyes. 
2. A high quality grain free diet may benefit your dog. Life's Abundances offers a grain free formula.
3. Excess minerals in water may cause staining. Examine your water and make adjustments if needed. Use purified, distilled or reverse osmosis water sources.
4. Do not neglect daily eye, mouth and hair hygiene. A quick daily face groom goes a long way in keeping stains away. Flush eyes with an appropriate canine eye-wash such as saline eye wash or Terra Septic eye drops. Moisten a cotton ball with the same eye wash and rub underneath and around the eye area.
5. Wash the muzzle hair with dry shampoo or waterless shampoo and a wet washcloth. Comb and blow dry.
6. Keep hair around eyes trimmed to avoid eye irritation.
7. Try glass water bottles like those made for birds. I think you can even get glass water bottles for dogs instead of water bowls.
8. If you allow your dog to drink from a bowl, use paper towels to absorb the excess water around the dog's mouth.
9. If you don't want to use the Eye Envy Powder, dust a little cornstarch underneath the eye, around the muzzle and in between the toes.
10. Try adding one teaspoon of organic apple-cider vinegar to meals.
