All our dog breeds were created by human ingenuity mentally and physically for specific jobs.
For example, the farmers fought an eternal war against rodents and other mammals who devastated grain supplies, raided farmer's hen houses, tore up their fields, carried disease to their stock and dug away at riverbanks.
Ancient ancestors raised a variety of terriers and Dachshunds to provide number one protection in subterranean warfare. These dogs are also called "earth dogs. They were built small with flexibility enough to push the quarry into underground lairs. They had jaws and forequarters with sufficient strength to hold and dispatch a recalcitrant gopher or badger. They were smart and independent mighty little workers with keen eye sight and a piercing, relentless bark that gave the handler above ground clues as to their location while on their job.
Where were these fearless little working dogs first found? They were first developed in the British Isles or former English colonies. The short legged terriers are often called the earth dogs, but they were informally divided into three sub groups.
A certain spirit was demanded of these early terrier dogs. They had to possess a devil-may-care fearlessness that when you hear the word "terrier," you think of a feisty persistence type personality.
Pet owners at first usually owned one of these three types of short-legged terriers:
- Westie
- Cairn
- Norwich
The long legged terriers were also used as pest exterminators approaching their daily chores a bit different. They did not squeeze into pest holes or den, they dug their way through while staying above ground. As they dig, they throw the earth back under the body and through their spread out rear legs. Because these long legged terriers are bigger than their short legged cousins they could work on bigger quarry like badgers and foxes.
With a bit of understanding about the beginning of our Terriers we can move onto the Terriers of today. Some of the Terrier instincts can pose problems for owners who don't understand that generations of breeding demand a "zesty dirt devil attitude" from a Terrier. Just use a little patience and understanding of what motivates your little Terrier friends. Above all, have a sense of humor as the Terriers can be quite "funny."
Terrier instincts can be problematic to owners who don’t understand that generations of breeding demand such behavior. The good news: Even the feistiest terriers can be trained and socialized to be good neighbors and dependable pets. All it takes is time, patience, and an understanding of what motivates these zesty dirt devils. And having a sense of humor won’t hurt. Below are the dogs that belong to the AKC Terrier Group.
