Episodes of Dog Zoomies: What is it?

Does your dog sometimes run in circles at a fast speed? I bet you thought he was stung by a bee or suddenly scared by something. Chances are greater he is experiencing a case of the "zoomies."

Zoomies is a behavior condition where dogs suddenly explode with energy. I suppose you could say a dog who suddenly runs through the house at a top speed is experiencing the zoomies as well. I have never seen one run in circles, but I have seen then just suddenly zoom as fast as they can go through the house or in the back yard.

Why do dogs get episodes of the zoomies?

• anytime they have some excess energy like after being crated or sitting nervous for some reason or another
• anytime your dog is denied opportunities to express his natural energy levels, you can expect an episode of the zoomies
• and just because they feel a sudden spurt of joy

You may not see episodes in senior dogs as much as younger ones as senior dogs tend to sleep more and have less energy in the first place.

Episodes of the zoomies is very normal behavior for dogs. Not all dogs participate, but for those who do, it seems like a joyous adventure for them, and it is nothing to worry about, unless your dog has multiple episodes of the zoomies within a 24 hour period. If this happens, you should try and found out what is causing it all. Consult a certified animal behaviorist for the answers.
