A dog's paw pads acts much like the soles of sneakers. They protect the dog's foot cushioning the foot with each step. Even though the paw pads are strong and tough, they still can be cut by sharp objects and even worn off if the dog runs hard on rough surfaces.
Steps to follow when treating paw injuries:
- Flush the wound carefully and gently with water or antiseptic. A good antiseptic to use is Betadine Scrub. If you find rocks, glass or other foreign debris remove it carefully. Do not force out anything that is lodged deep into the foot.
- Stop the bleeding. Apply pressure with a clean towel and an ice pack. Deep wounds and punctures can bleed a lot.
- Take a good look at the damage. A minor paw injury can be managed at home. A vet should manage a severe wound. Some deep cuts may require sutures. The dog may even need sedation if there is a lot of debris like little bits of gravel or something firmly lodged into the pad. Antibiotics will protect against infection.
- Bandage the wounds with nonstick gauze or a Telfa pad directly over the cut. Apply a little triple antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Keep the bandage snug, but loose enough to allow good circulation to your dog's foot. A good rule to follow about bandages is "can you slide two fingers under the bandage?" You also want to prevent the bandage from falling off. Wrap bandage up to and including the next joint on your dog's leg: carpus or wrist in front, hock in back. Place a little more tape around the top of the bandage to help keep it in place. Be sure you keep the bandage dry! Moisture will provide a way for bacteria to get through the bandage and into the wound. Commercial booties are helpful to protect the bandage when dog goes outside. You can also tape a plastic bag over it. Change bandage daily until healing sets in.
- Be patient.
- The time to heal will proceed faster if the wound is protected adequately. Try to keep him quiet and prevent running or chewing at the bandage. This might require the use of an Elizabethan collar. After healing, still be cautious with the dog's activities that could damage the healing pad or use a bootie to protect the foot. Time to heal depends upon the type of wound and extent of injury. Common sense will tell you if it was a serious injury, it most likely will take quite some time to heal. Be patient.
