If the tick is walking on your dog, grab it with your fingers or use a paper towel if you don't want to touch it with your bare hand. If the tick is attached, pull it off. Be sure you get the head out of the dog's skin.
You really should invest in a regular "tick remover" tool. Keep it handy. Tweezers work in a pinch of time.
Grip the tick's head (sounds so awful already), but has to be done. I hate ticks! Grip the tick's head as close to your dog's skin as possible. Slowly pull it out using a steady pressure. Do not tear quickly....pulling quickly could leave the tick's head behind leaving your dog at risk for catching a tick-borne disease.
Disposal of a tick:
- flush down the toilet or
- put them in the trash in a sealed container just in case they aren't really dead or
- you can also burn them with a lighter, just don't burn them with a lighter while they are still attached to your dog or
- you can save the tick in a sealed container to show your vet for Lyme-disease testing
Clean the bite area. You can use an alcohol wipe or Betadine scrub solution.
Cleaning the wound reduces risk of secondary bacteria infection. Even an entire bath with Betadine scrub might be in order for better peace of mind. Then scrub the specific tick area with an alcohol scrub.
Don't forget to check your dog thoroughly for other ticks using a fine toothed comb. Check yourself and other pets.
Preventative care is the best solution. Use a regular flea and tick preventative.
Follow your vet instructions. He or she may want to do blood work to be sure there is no tick-borne diseases left behind.
