The Clever and Confident Airedale Terrier

He is the largest of all terriers. The males stand about 23 inches at the shoulder. The females are smaller. He or she could end up weighing 50 to 70 pounds, so not a small dog at all, but a large dog by all description. He or she is a terrier who is alert and willing plus much, much more.

Where did the Airedale Terrier come from?

The Aire River valley in England is most likely the origin of this dog breed. They were developed by crossing a Terrier with an Otter Hound in the mid-1800s.

Large rats lived on the banks of the Aire River. Fascinating is that Yorkshiremen used the Airedale Terrier in competitions that drew a huge audience. Rat hunt competitions consisted of sending ferrets into rat holes to flush out the rats. The Airedales were then used to chase the rates across the banks and into the river. Wouldn't that be a sight to see?

Other uses of the Airedale Terrier include:
  • police duty in Germany and Great Britain.
  • wartime guard
  • messenger duty
  • rodent control
  • hunting birds and games
