Puppy Grooming Tips

Spring is usually the time we all get into the mood to "clean." If you have not already established a grooming routine with your dog, spring is a good time to start. Consistency is key.

Here are a few grooming tips to get you started.

Before you even start grooming your dog be sure to handle his ears and paws when he is relaxed to get him use to you handling these areas. Dogs are especially sensitive in these areas. They need to learn to have them handled during a relaxed an pleasurable time. It makes it easier when you have to clean the ears and cut toenails during grooming sessions. Now is the time to establish a weekly groom session routine. This way, the puppy knows what to expect. This time slot should be a time before he has a meal and be sure he has relieved himself as well.

Place your puppy on a non-skid surface. Be sure to keep one hand on the puppy at all times. Always end the session with lots of praise and treats (if puppy behaves appropriately.)

Be sure to invest in a high quality brush and comb. There will be areas you will need a comb instead of a brush and areas where you will need a brush instead of a comb. Human hair dryers work well.

Dog Manage Symptoms and Treatment

Mange is a common skin disease in dogs and puppies usually strays, neglected dogs or abused dogs. The sight of an extreme case of mange is disheartening, sad and scary. These dogs appear to be beyond hope. They are usually hairless. The skin is covered in sores or with thick, hard, crusty patches.

How Often Should You Bath Your Dog?

Have you noticed how dogs have different coats of hair? Watch the dogs in the show ring or just watch pets walking down the street in your neighborhood. You will soon realize what a wide variety of hair and coat types every dog has. Even dogs that do not require a lot of daily grooming have to be kept clean and healthy using the right kind of shampoo and other grooming products.

How often should you bath your dog?

This will depend upon the breed and coat specific needs. You want to look for a shampoo formula especially designed to benefit the kind of coat your dog has.

When shopping for a shampoo formula it is a good idea to keep in mind the ingredients in the formula. You don't want to add harsh chemicals to your dog's body and coat as they do penetrate through and into the dog's system causing possible health problems you would not have to deal with otherwise.

Dogs with fine or thin fur or hair such as Chihuahuas and Basenjis often have a single-layered coat and no thick undercoat. A single-coated dog does not need baths as frequently as other breeds with thicker coats. These dogs often require bathing at least every two weeks.
