Dog Manage Symptoms and Treatment

Mange is a common skin disease in dogs and puppies usually strays, neglected dogs or abused dogs. The sight of an extreme case of mange is disheartening, sad and scary. These dogs appear to be beyond hope. They are usually hairless. The skin is covered in sores or with thick, hard, crusty patches.

It not only looks horrible, it is very painful for the dog or puppy. It is good to know even the worst of the most serious cases can be treated effectively and the dog returned to a normal looking canine.

Mange is caused by mites. It affects many different kinds of animals including humans. 

There are two main forms of mange, each caused by different mites:

1. Sarcoptic Mange known as scabies
2. Demodectic Manage known as red mange 

Symptoms are:

• Lymph node inflammation in advanced cases
• Extreme itchiness
• Redness and rash
• Thick yellow crusts
• Hair loss

Treatment:

It is wise to consult with a vet for treatment recommendations because even mild cases can grow quickly into serious cases. The hair will need to be clipped or shaved down (what's left of it). There are dips that cleanse and heal the skin. Topical applications to kill the mites are available. Some dog breeders and owners will use monthly doses of Ivomec to kill mites in their tracks and prevent mange.
