There could be a deadly plant growing in your back yard. What is it? It is poison mushrooms. But wait a minute. Maybe not. Not all wild mushrooms are poisonous.

It is estimated there are 10,000 species of mushroom worldwide. Only 50 to 100 species are known to be toxic. How can you know if what is growing in your backyard is toxic?

Toxic mushrooms in North America are said to be of the Amanita species. Best way to find out if your mushrooms are Amanita is to have them tested to see if they are of the Amanita species.

If you suspect your dog has eaten poisonous mushrooms, here are the signs to look for:

• lethargy
• staggering
• panting
• whining
• dizziness
• salivation
• vomiting
• tachycardia
• collapse

Of course you need to take your dog to the vet if these symptoms are present. The good news here is that "few deaths" are reported. There are probably more dogs poisoned by mushrooms than we will ever know as poisonous mushrooms are rarely identified as the reason for the above signs and symptoms. It is also unknown how many mushrooms a dog would need to consume before he becomes poisoned.

Your state's cooperative extension service, regional poison centers, and veterinary teaching facilities are most likely your best help in identifying poison mushrooms in your area.

Summer Is Just Around the Corner: Prepare for Your Dog Early

Warmer weather is just right around the corner for most of us (February 2019). Here is a list of things to remember as you and your dog move into summer months.

Overheating is a real problem for dogs. Every year, we read and hear of countless reports of dogs being left alone in hot vehicles. Rule of thumb here is NEVER leave a dog alone in a vehicle in hot weather.

What about dog heatstroke? It happens. A dog's fur is like wearing around a heavy wool coat in the summer time. It is great for colder temps, but not so great when it gets hot outside. Dogs with longer, thicker and even darker coat hair soaks up heat and sun making it easier for them to suffer from heatstroke. Brachycephalic breeds such as shih tzu, pugs and bulldogs are also at a greater risk for heatstroke because of the restrictions to their airways. If you can, allow your long haired dog to wear a short haircut in the summertime.

Pay attention to the humidity as well. Humid weather makes a dog's temperature rise.

Dogs who are hairless, white or any light color can get sun burn more easily, however, all dogs are susceptible. There are sunscreens made especially for dogs.

Watch for those hot pavements. Touch the pavement you plan to walk your dog upon and if it is hot to your hand touch, just imagine what your dog's paws feel like on the same pavement. Blisters and cuts can result when dogs walk on too hot pavements.

Our dogs need regular exercise. We need regular exercise. Why not kill two birds with one stone and "walk the dog." You will find out walking your dog has more benefits than just exercise.
