Ways to Build Puppy Brain Power

Puppies are naturally curious. They will search for something to do. If they are not directed to constructive things to do, they may resort to destructive behaviors such as digging up your flowers in the flower garden or your vegetables in the vegetable garden or chewing on the furniture.
Here is where you need to teach your new puppy the rules of your house. Let them know exactly what they can do and cannot do. Redirect their natural curious, eager to learn traits into things they need to learn in order to be a good dog citizen in your home. It is easier than you might think and the result will be a dog you can live with in peace and comfort.
In order to raise a healthy, confident and well socialized puppy it is important to provide them with ample exercise and mental stimulation. Your puppy needs a daily work out routine to help burn off excess energy that could turn into destructive behavior. Mental exercise can be just as exhausting as physical exercise. Provide your puppy with lots of cognitive challenges.
Lay aside time to play with your puppy every day. Cuddle, have fun, but keep in mind you need to provide puppy with challenging games that will help make him smarter. Games like hiding treats or placing kibble in a set of stacking containers are great ways to give your puppy mental stimulation and healthy mental work-outs. Puppy will try to pull the containers apart getting to the tricks. It is a great mental stimulation game to set up for puppy.
Other brain building games include:
  • Playing hide-and-seek: Hide a treat, toss kibble around the room or even hide yourself and call puppy to find you.
  • Play a game of the hidden treasure: Place several small boxes or flower pots or bowls upside down on the floor and hide a treat under only one. Allow your puppy to sniff until he finds the treat.
  • Play tug of war with your puppy to teach skills like "drop it upon command" and "emotional self-control."
  • Play games of fetch to help teach your puppy to NOT steal and to return to you valuable items puppy finds.
To help prevent boredom when you are unable to play with your puppy, use cognitively challenging toys that often involve hidden food. A snuffle mat is a great example of a cognitive challenging toy/game your puppy can play when you are away. A snuffle mat is a piece of fabric you can make with pockets and flaps for hiding treats or kibble. Try several different puzzle toys that require the dog to lift lids, open drawers or spin layers to expose the hidden treat or food.

You should always use high quality treats such as those offered through Life's Abundance. Try Gourmet Dental Treats and help clean your puppy's teeth with each bite.

Train Your Dog to Take Car Rides in Comfort

Part of the fun of owning a dog is to be able to take him or her on road trips or short trips with you in the car. Unfortunately not all dogs ride in cars well. Some may whine, drool and even vomit from car sickness. Other dogs will ride happily without a problem at all.

There are ways to teach your dog to ride comfortable in the car. It is easiest to teach young puppies to ride in cars, and wise to start your new puppy riding in a car early. However, older dogs can also be trained to ride in cars happily.

You can either step by step gradually introduce your dog to the car or counter condition that changes your dog's emotional response from negative to positive.

How severely your dog reacts to riding in the car will determine where to start training. It might be a few feet from the car or longer. You first must determine the point where your dog is comfortable and relaxed then move closer and closer.

At each stage, have healthy and delicious treats, a toy or a meal waiting for times in which he shows no anxiety or fear. You can even play games with your dog along the way to make it seem like a fun thing you and he are doing together. Only move closer when your dog is completely relaxed at the current stage. A sign your dog is not ready to move closer is that he stops playing or eating. If this occurs, take a step or two backward until the dog relaxes then start again.

Remember every dog is different. It might take a few minutes for some and with others days of training. Just be patient and move toward the car at your dog's pace.

Your next steps involve adding other elements that precede the actual ride. These include:

  • sitting in the driver's seat
  • closing the doors
  • making the remote locks beep
  • buckling seat belts
  • starting radio or other music
Each step along the way requires lots of praise, fun times, and treats to reinforce the fact that "this is okay to do."

You might even toss some treats in the back seat for your dog to find once he or she is strapped in or as soon as he is in the position to go for a ride. Play some tug of war together to keep it a fun and happy time. Just don't move the car YET. Let your dog get use to the sounds of the engine with food, fun and games.

Once you get your dog to look forward to getting into the car, add the motion. Start with very short distances such as moving the car to the end of the driveway. Continue building the time spent moving in the car by short increments. Make every step of the way pleasant. If you can find a helper who will ride beside your dogs and continue playing or giving treats, this would be fabulous.

When you start traveling with your dog, choose destinations you know your dog will enjoy. You could drive to the park or the woods. Get out and allow your dog to play and explore before returning home.

If you will remain calm and patient, you will have your dog riding in the car and looking forward to the ride.

Tips to keep your dog from getting motion sickness:
  • The car's inside temperature should be warm in cold seasons and cool in warm seasons
  • Lower the windows to let some fresh air in
  • Limit your dog's food and water for a few hours before the trip
  • Ask your vet for motion sickness or anti-anxiety medicine
  • Exercise your dog about twenty minutes before your trip to decrease stress
  • Use a dog pheromones collar or spray to mimic the odor of a nursing mother dog. Pheromones mimic the odor of a nursing mother dog and can relax even an adult dog.

How to Tell if Your Dogs are Wrestling for Fun or Are in a Knock Down, Drag Out Fight

How do you know if two dogs wrestling is just play time or actual fight to knock out time? The sounds and body language are very similar. You will hear and see:
  • growling and snarling
  • body-slamming
  • biting of each other's necks
So what do  you do? Stop an innocent period of play time or separate a vicious attack on one another?

In fact, growling, snarling, body-slamming and even bites here and there is "normal dog play." Puppies learn this type of play from their own mother and litter mates. Puppies play with their litter mates continually. It is cute to watch. You know they are not going to hurt each other. Many times they don't even have all their teeth. Wrestling to a litter of puppies is almost as good as meal times. After a good meal, they say to each other, come on now see if you can lay me down and keep me down. It is a critical time for social development among their pack team. It is good exercise and fun to watch as well.

Go on You tube and see how many views are attached to "puppies wrestling" with each other. However, as a new dog owner of more than one dog, you should try to learn the difference between innocent dog wrestling and a real knock down, drag out fight.

Here are behaviors that say it is good fun and playtime wrestling/fighting:
  • Front end down, back end in the air indicates dog body language of "let's play." The dog trying to initiate play might slap his front legs down on the ground repeatedly.
  • Big, silly open-mouthed grins indicate good fun play.
  • Bouncing movements around each other that just looks like the dogs are acting silly.
  • Exaggerated or loud continuous growling and snarling. Sometimes play growling sounds a little scarier than serious fighting.
  • Dogs or puppies keep going back for more wrestling sessions. There might be one on its back, then in a few minutes the other one might be on his back.
  • Dogs or puppies will voluntarily tell each other in the body language of falling down and exposing their bellies and allowing themselves to be caught when playing chase.
  • They take turns chasing each other.
The following behaviors are some of the signs that tell you this is not a game, but a real knock down, drag out fight:
  • Dogs get very stiff.
  • Hair on dog's upper back is raised. You might not be able to readily see this if the dog's hair is long.
  • The mouths are closed.
  • The lips are curled up.
  • You will hear a low warning growl.
  • Dog movements will be quick and efficient. There will be no bouncing around and no taking turns.
  • Ears will be pinned flat.
  • Lips will be curled back and you will hear snarling. There are no big silly smiles as if the dogs are having fun.
  • If true combat begins, hope it will be a short encounter. The loser will try to leave the area. They won't be going back for more play.
  • One dog is trying to get away from the other dog. Body language is not happy and bouncy.
  • Tails might be tucked in. This is an indication of fear. It might be just one dog with a tail tucked in or both dogs. This indicates they are not having fun, but are in a fearful battle with one another.
Of course, if you determine the wrestling match is not fun play time, you should attempt to separate the dogs from each other.

Puppy Grooming Tips

Spring is usually the time we all get into the mood to "clean." If you have not already established a grooming routine with your dog, spring is a good time to start. Consistency is key.
Here are a few grooming tips to get you started.
Before you even start grooming your dog be sure to handle his ears and paws when he is relaxed to get him use to you handling these areas. Dogs are especially sensitive in these areas. They need to learn to have them handled during a relaxed an pleasurable time. It makes it easier when you have to clean the ears and cut toenails during grooming sessions. Start using Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner at 12 weeks of age to safely remove dirt, odor and waxy build up's. Regular use helps to keep the ears healthy.
Now is the time to establish a weekly groom session routine. This way, the puppy knows what to expect. This time slot should be a time before he has a meal and be sure he has relieved himself as well.
Place your puppy on a non-skid surface. Be sure to keep one hand on the puppy at all times. Always end the session with lots of praise and treats (if puppy behaves appropriately.)
Be sure to invest in a high quality brush and comb. There will be areas you will need a comb instead of a brush and areas where you will need a brush instead of a comb. Human hair dryers work well.
Set up a grooming table or shelf with all your tools easily accessible. I suggest using Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist to help untangle mats and/or just to make the comb out easier. This product will help neutralize odors and will leave the coat shiny and silky soft. You can use Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist in between baths to help freshen the coat and as a perfume to keep odors neutralized. Regular use will also prevent tangled hair and mats. Puppies usually don't develop mats, but as your puppy grows into a dog depending upon the breed, mats can develop and they are a pain to have to deal with. It is better to use the Bath Fresh Mist regular to help prevent them.
Never bath a dog without first brushing and combing out the coat. If the dog has mats, bathing without combing through the mats will make it much more difficult in the end to get through the mats. If you use Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo, there will be no need for an extra conditioning product after the shampoo.
Keep a blood stopping powder on hand just in case you cut the nails too close. If you do cut too close, the powder quickly stops bleeding.
Finding an experienced and caring groomer is a must especially if you are unable to do proper grooming yourself. An important question to ask groomers is: "What safety protocols do you follow?" A well educated and experienced groomer will know how to keep your dog safe and keep an eye out for things that are just not right with your dog.
A day at the groomer's is always a delightful experience for the owner. When you see your dog come out from a great grooming session, you will "swoon." They are so beautiful at that moment. You can usually tell at this time whether or not the dog enjoyed the experience. If you notice any kind of negative after affects from your dog's appearance or disposition, then shop for another groomer, or try to find out from the groomer WHY your dog did not like his spa experience.
