When you bring home a new puppy there is so much to do and so much to teach the new puppy you might forget one important command and that is "Come." Why is this so important?

Well....you could save the puppy's life by teaching them this command in an event, for example, the puppy suddenly darted out the door into the street. If the puppy knows what this command means, all you have to do is say "Come," and puppy will come running back to the arc of safety in your arms.

Begin training (come when called) in a quiet area and indoors.
Sit with your puppy and say puppy's name or the word "come."
Each time you say "come/name," give your puppy a treat.
The puppy need not do anything yet. You only want to condition him to the repeat command "come/name" (insert the puppy's name so if your puppy's name is Calvin, say "Come Calvin), and give the treat. Easy peasy stuff, but vital to the well being of your new puppy.
Now....drop the treat on the floor near you. Watch closely. As soon as puppy finishes the treat (this is important to do this as soon as puppy finishes the treat, not before, or even a few minutes after, so you will need to watch puppy very closely to get the right moment). As soon as puppy finishes the treat on the ground, SAY HIS NAME AGAIN. When he looks up to the sound of his name, give him another treat. Repeat this a couple of times. Now...start tossing the treat a little further away at a distance he will turn around to face you when you say his name. AVOID REPEATING PUPPY'S NAME, because saying it too often when he does not respond makes it easier for him to ignore the call. Do this instead. Move closer to your puppy and back to a step where he can be successful at responding to his name the first time you say it.
Once you teach your puppy to turn around to face you, start adding movement and make the game more fun. Toss a treat on the ground and take a few quick steps away while calling your puppy's name. Puppy should start running after you because "the chase" is fun stuff. When they catch you, give them vigorous praise, a treat or play more with a tug toy. Remember, this part of coming to you should be taught as being FUN STUFF!
Continue building on the above procedures with longer distances and in other locations.
When training begins outside, use a safe and enclosed area, and keep your puppy on a long leash at first if it is easier to maintain control. Remember you are the PACK LEADER of the two of you.
When your puppy comes to you, don't just reach out and grab him real quick as this can confuse the puppy and even be frightening to some dogs.
If your puppy is the timid type, kneel and face puppy sideways and offer treats as you reach for the collar.
Never call puppy to punish him as this will teach puppy that you are not to be trusted or unpredictable and it is a better idea just to avoid you than to COME to you.
Lastly, in order to condition the puppy to always come to you when you call its name or the give the command, REWARD the dog extravagantly for just responding to his or her name by coming to you when called "even if you catch them in some kind of mischief." Again, this command is to help you save the puppy's life in dire situations, and just in general to teach the puppy that when you say COME CALVIN, they definitely will come to you without hesitation!
