How to Teach a Dog to Stay Off the Furniture

If you prefer to keep your dogs off the furniture, teach them that is where they are suppose to be.

Manage your dog's furniture access:

Take steps to prevent the dog from being able to get on the sofa. You can remove the cushions or flip them up. You can put boxes on the sofa to block the dog's access. You can use a baby gate to keep the dog out of the room completely.

If it is comfort your dog seeks, provide them with an alternative comfortable place to rest especially for dogs such as a new bed that proves to the dog the new bed is more comfortable than your sofa. Just as you can teach a dog to eliminate in the right place, you can teach a dog that it is okay to lie on this sofa but not that sofa.

Teach your dog furniture rules:

1. Teaching a dog to get up on the furniture is usually pretty easy. Use the cue "Up" when you invite the dog onto the furniture. When the dog is up, mark the behavior with a click of a clicker or a verbal marker such as "Yes." 
2. Give a treat
3. Then say "Off"
4. Toss a treat on the floor
5. When the dog jumps off to get the treat, click again, as she gets the treat off the floor
6. Repeat the above with several repetitions and start fading the lures by giving the "Up" or "Off" cue and then waiting a few seconds to see if she does the requested behavior. If she does not, motion but don't toss a treat on the floor or actually lure her onto the furniture. When she responds, click and treat.
7. Gradually reduce the suggestive movement until she is doing the "Up" and "Off" behaviors on a verbal cue only.
8. Start alternating other forms of reinforcement. If you click, you must feed a treat. Occasionally skip the click and treat, while praising instead, or giving her a scratch behind the ear or inviting her outside for a game of whatever.
