Signs of Skin Cancer on Dogs

Grooming your dog is the perfect time to check for skin problems. Most of the time everything turns out fine. Then there is that one moment in time you feel or see a lump you never seen or felt before.

 

Your first thought might be, "oh no," my dog has cancer. And your next thought might be, "oh no," it can't be cancer.

 

There is a good chance it is not and just a hemangioma instead. Hemangiomas are harmless. Hemangiosarcoma are deadly. At any rate, a trip to the vet is warranted. A biopsy will determine the best course of action. Never ignore a lump.

Hemangiomas on the skin looks a lot like a blood blister. The color can vary from red to black and the lesion can bleed as well as grow. When these blood blisters grow it makes it easier to bruise, lacerate and cause infection.

The cause of hemangiomas is unknown. They usually do not appear until middle age and are more often seen on thin-skinned, light-colored breeds of dogs. You will find them mainly on the trunk or legs and especially on hairless areas like the lower stomach.

A vet will usually recommend the hemangioma be surgically removed and tested for cancer. Before removing, you will need to keep the area clean and ask your vet what type of topical antibiotic or wound cream is needed.

Signs of Skin Cancer on Dogs include:

• any new lump or growth calls for vet immediate attention
• a classic sign of skin cancer is a lesion that just won't heal
• watch for bleeding, change in color, crusty look or layer
• inflammation
• itchiness
• swelling
• wart-like appearance lumps

Hemangiomas are not malignant, but do resemble closely aggressive cancer called hemangiosarcoma determined with a biopsy.

Time is important. Do not wait for a newly discovered lump to go away. Waiting for a lump to disappear could prove to be a costly mistake. Early diagnosis is key to how to move forward as well as life saving for your pet.
