The Genetics That Help To Make The Dog Man's Best Friend Are Both Blessings and Curses

Hard to believe that below the surface of that cute face puppy exists a mind similar to its ancestor and/or cousin - the wolf!

People have stretched and molded the dog's genetic material to create hundreds of different dog breeds ranging from a tiny Chihuahua to a giant St. Bernard. They each have a purpose or role in life to serve us humans.

It is hard sometimes to understand our wonderful dog pets still have many of the wolf's survival instincts that humans began about 15,000 years ago to invite into the warmth and protection of our ancestor's caves.

The genetics that helped to make the dog man's best friend are both a blessing a curse. In what ways you might say?

• the desire to be a member of a social group or pack is a blessing to us in that this makes the dog fit in so nicely to our family life and training....they want to belong due to their past instinct to be part of the pack and a social group
• this same desire to be part of a social group or pack is also a curse to us in that it can trigger destructive separation anxiety when a dog is left alone such as non-stop barking, inappropriate urination and defecation, chewing on inappropriate items and self destruction attempts to escape the aloneness

When we begin to understand the canine's behaviors and instincts we can create dogs with proper training to be well adjusted and cherished as family members, which is what  everybody wants in the end. Many of us fail at this task miserably. The millions of dogs left at animal shelters in the U.S. is a testimony to this fact.

What can we do other than learn the best approaches of training. We can give back to the shelters that end up housing our failures.
