By tradition the Central Asian Shepherd Dog was used mostly for sheep herding and to stand on guard duty. After the Communist revolution, the Soviet government focused upon working dog breeds for the Red Army harming the local dog population over the decades. Introduction of new breeds to the region led to crossbreeding. Consequently, purebred dogs remained with herders, breed enthusiasts and farms. Even through all this, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog population is still fairly stable.
The large Central Asian Shepherd Dog may spend a considerable amount of time moving around in its native lands. He likes best this kind of slow, steady exercise. Give him a job to do protecting a piece of property and he will find the highest spot to nest and keep an eye on all that happens.
There is minimal grooming the coat, however, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog sheds (the undercoat) twice per year. The coat is short to moderately long with a heavy undercoat. Ears are very short. Colors are commonly black/white, fawn of different shades from an almost white as seen above to a deep red, and brindle, some having the black mask. He has a very solid head. The neck is low set and short. His typical gait is that of a "gallop."
He or she is a robust dog of greater than average size, great strength and power. They look as independent as they truly are, and they are curious as well as alert.
