Chews That are Bad for Your Dog and Chews That are Good For Your Dog

Chewing is an important part of your dog's life. It is good for his oral and mental health. Chewing helps keep the teeth clean and gives his body exercise and keeps his mind occupied. Encouraging your dog to chew on a regular basis on something safe will also help prevent problem behaviors. For example, a dog who chews for 30 minutes is more apt to take a nap rather than getting into some kind of trouble doing something he or she should not do.
Dog with black KONG toy
Dog chewing is also good for owners in that while your dog happily chews, you can sit back and relax, read a good book, watch a little T.V. knowing your dog is safe at your feet chewing on something safe and good for he or she.

Some of the items not good for a dog to chew include:

  1. tennis balls
  2. rawhide chews
  3. cow's hooves
  4. real animal bones
Let us first take a look at tennis balls and why they are more harm than good for your dog. Tennis ball chewing can cause serious dental problems as the wool and nylon is abrasive and can wear down tooth enamel with prolonged use.

As tennis balls bounce along the ground, they pick up grit and grime. For aggressive chewers, the repetitions of gnawing down on the tennis ball can wear down the enamel so completely that the tooth pulp becomes exposed creating a painful condition that can only be fixed by a root canal or tooth extraction.

Most dogs love a good game of fetch and it is excellent exercise as well as mental stimulation for both you and your dog companion. Use a plain rubber ball instead. A plain rubber ball won't accumulate as much dirt as a tennis ball.

Rawhide chews are a definite no no for any dog, big or small. They are made from compressed layers of cow's skin. The concerns here are harsh chemical processes like bleaching that makes the rawhide chew more susceptible to bacteria contamination. Rawhide chews are also a choking hazard. They are not easily digested and can cause stomach upset. Dogs who are allowed to chew rawhide chews may experience tooth fractures or intestinal obstruction from the small fragments bitten off the rawhide chew.

Cow's hooves is much like the rawhide chews. Don't go there. Don't purchase these for your dog to chew on no matter how inexpensive they may be, just don't allow your dogs to chew on cow's hooves. Here is why. There is danger in breaking a tooth. There is danger in ingesting small fragments that can lacerate the intestines and there are choking risks.

Real animal bones is another chew you should never give your dog. The hazards are much the same as for the above mentioned chews, choking, possible bacterial contamination and overall digestion problems may result.

Don't make your dog sick with any of the above chews and most of all keep your dog alive, happy and well.

Appropriate chews include those produced by Life's Abundance.

Mouthing Off – A Review of Canine Chews from Life's Abundance on Vimeo.

The Beautiful Solid Brown Boykin Spaniel Gun dog

The Boykin Spaniels are medium sized. They are larger and rangier than Cockers yet more compact than Springers. They are easily recognized by their hallmark solid-brown coat. The colors range from a rich liver to a luscious chocolate. They have large feathery ears that hang close to the cheeks giving an expression of soulful intelligence.
Bogie Female Boykin
They move effortless and balanced typical of durable gun dogs. The Boykin Spaniel was bred to work the lakes and swamps of their homeland of South Carolina. Their web toes help them to swim like a seal rather than a dog. His credentials include criteria that no other canine can honestly claim. Originally bred by South Carolina hunters he was developed at first to be the ideal dog for hunting "wild turkeys" believe it or not in the Wateree River Swamp during early 1900s. They now adapt beautifully to the dove fields, the duck marshes and the home fires of his modern day master.

It is important to note here that most Boykin Spaniel dogs have a special personality (I can see this in their eyes and face). They live life enthusiastically possessing field abilities that no other dog can match. They usually become extremely devoted to their owners. They can be trained to participate in and excel in most all AKC performance events including Spaniel Hunt Tests, Spaniel Field Trials, Working Ability Certifications, Tracking Tests, Obedience Trials, Rally Trials and Agility Trials.

Boykin Spaniel also serve quite well as therapy and service dogs. Many more of them compete with great success in conformation shows. (source: American Kennel Club)

Life's Abundance's Strong Commitment Toward Pet Health

Like many companies, the Life's Abundance Company started small. In 1998, Dennis and Carol Berardi co-founded Trilogy International, now Life's Abundance with a commitment to offer exceptional health products for people, the planet and pets.

From the outset, they employed two other people, including Stephen Berardi, Dennis’ brother. Together, they worked out of the office of Dennis and Carol’s home in Palm City, FL.

In 1999, Dennis and Carol began searching for qualified product formulators. Within a few weeks the duo met with fate, at a pet fair where one of the nation’s leading holistic veterinarians, Dr. Jane Bicks, was in attendance. Soon, a great partnership was formed. With Dr. Jane onboard, the company quickly added more professionals – Ann McEver, Linda Logue and Lester Thornhill – each with their own areas of expertise. It wasn’t long before they realized they had too many people working in that one-room office, and soon they moved their new “home office” in Stuart, FL. Soon, there were more hires and product was flying off the shelves.

The next phase of development came when George and Cris Jochum became major shareholders. Based upon George’s extensive business development experience, the Berardi’s asked him to assume the mantle of President and CEO. Under George’s direction, the company flourished … in fact, Life's Abundance has never failed to make a profit since 2003. Soon, the corporate headquarters was relocated to Palm City, FL, to accommodate an increasing need for space, both for new employees and growing inventory supplies.

In August of 2008, Lester Thornhill was promoted from Senior VP of IT to Life's Abundance CEO and President. Dennis and Carol Berardi ceased their overseeing of day-to-day activities of the home office, and now they commit all of their energies to supporting our extensive network of Field Reps. George retired in 2012 and Cris succeeded him as Board Chairman.

Throughout the years, the company has continued to grow and expand. As sales have increased, so have the numbers of employees and warehouses. Growth and improvements in technology have also led to numerous improvements in our products, services and business processes over the years.

In October of 2010, the company officially changed its name to Life's Abundance, Inc.

Life's Abundance is one of the first pet food companies to prominently feature antioxidants, prebiotics and probiotics in their pet food formulas. This accomplishment has been ground breaking innovations for the pet product industry.

Life's Abundance has also been deeply concerned about the prevalence of artificial colors and flavors in many commercial pet foods. The dependence upon artificial preservatives relied upon gluten, corn and wheat as the cornerstone ingredients to many commercial pet foods.

These grains are highly susceptible to dangers due to mold toxins. You do not want your companion animals congesting these harmful substances.

At Life's Abundance they have never used artificial colors, flavors or preservatives and they never will take short cuts when it comes to making premium pet food.

Life's Abundance continues in the year of 2017 to be pioneers passionate about providing innovative highly effective products for your dogs and cats to help them live healthy and happy for as long as possible.

The Alert and Curious Boxer Dogs

If you have ever seen a well-conditioned Boxer he or she is an awesome sight to see. The males can stand as high as 25 inches at the shoulder. Females as usual are a little shorter. Muscles on the boxer dogs ripple beneath their short, tight-fitting coat. They have dark brown eyes and wrinkled foreheads, both of these characteristics give the Boxer dog breed an alert and curious look.
Male fawn Boxer undocked

The Boxer is an athlete and moves like one as well. They are powerful, moving smoothly and gracefully. Colors can be fawn (tan to mahogany-red) or brindle (like tiger stripes) with white markings.

The Boxer has a heritage known throughout the whole of Europe since the 16th century. He reached perfection in Germany during the past hundred years. Prior, his ancestors were hardly recognized as Boxers. Evidence reveals the Boxer as one of the many descendants of the old fighting dog of the high valleys of Tibet.

They are patient and spirited with children, but also very protective, making them a popular choice for family life.

They have a heritage as a chaser of wild game. You can expect them to spend some time jumping and leaping about. As young puppies, they may be in constant need of correction to teach them to stay down. They need daily exercise. They are very intelligent and tolerant of repetitious commands, although they may consider these commands "boring." They are known to have a mind of their own and are excellent at solving problems. (source: American Kennel Club)

For this dog, I would first choose the Life's Abundance Buffalo Lungs healthy chews. However, try them all and find the exact ones your Boxer likes the best.

NOT all Dog Treats Should be Fed to Your Beloved Pets

Why should you be more selective about the treats you feed your dogs?

The main reason is to ensure you are promoting good health and long life rather than reducing the life of your dog and creating health problems he or she otherwise would not have.

Read the labels on your dog treats before you buy, just the same as you read labels on your own food products.

If the label says there are any of the following ingredients, pass the treat up, for the sake of your dog's good health and longer life expectancy:

Ingredients to avoid are:

  1. Wheat
  2. Corn
  3. By Product Meals
  4. Artificial colors
  5. BHA/BHT
  6. Propylene Glycol
The above ingredients are more harmful for your dog than good. So why increase the chance of making your dog sick when it is easily avoidable by choosing dog treats wisely.

Wheat in dog treats is a common reason for allergy. Guess what? You might be paying a vet thousands of dollars a year to treat allergies in your dog, when all you have to do is NOT buy dog treats or food with the ingredients of wheat. Simple.

Wheat in dog treats can cause a dog to have itchy skin, ear infections, diarrhea, vomiting and excessive gas. I bet you been buying all kinds of topical products and perhaps even giving prescription medicines to stop the itchy skin, hot spots, ear infections, diarrhea and vomiting when all you need to do is read the labels on your dog treats and avoid ones with Wheat.

Wheat as an ingredient in dog treats can cause dogs to be more susceptible to mold, such as aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is deadly to humans as well as animals. It attacks the liver and can cause death.

af·la·tox·in
[af-l uh- tok-sin]
NOUN
1.
any of various related mycotoxins produced by a species of Aspergillus, commonly A. flavus, found as a contaminant in moldy grains and meals, as in rice and peanut meal, and suspected of causing liver cancer in humans and other animals.
Wheat is an ingredient in many dog treats sold at common retail outlets online and offline because it is "an inexpensive source of protein."
Corn is another cheap way to boost protein content, however, dog treats containing corn is difficult for pets to digest. Corn ingredients in dog treats also can cause stress on the animal's kidneys. Been to the vet lately for a kidney infection in your dog. Corn in the diet could be the cause. Eliminate it.  Corn is the #3 reason for allergies in dogs. Again, you might be paying expensive vet bills for expensive allergy medicines when all you need to do is choose your dog treats more wisely. Read the labels and avoid treats that contain corn as well.
Corn in dog treats can make the animal more susceptible to mold such as Aflatoxin.
By-Product Meals: This is one that should not be in the dog treats you choose at all! Don't even go there. Just put it back on the shelf. No good for your beloved dog companion.
Artificial colors provide no nutritional value. They are often used to make the treat prettier, or make a treat look like a fruit or vegetable. Colorants were introduced into dog treats without any medical studies. Why not? Just an animal. Right? But when it is your beloved dog, why take a chance about anything you give he or she to eat. You could be slowly poisoning your pet and don't even realize it.
BHA/BHT Preservatives are not natural preservatives, but are used in cheap dog treats, even more expensive dog treats to preserve the food over time. They are used because they are cheap to use, but provide no nutritional value and could even be harmful. Avoid dog food and treats with these kind of preservatives.
Propylene Glycol has been proven to cause anemia in cats and is banned from use in cat foods by the FDA. Data also indicates propylene glycol is toxic to dogs with a 50% chance of being lethal at doses of 9mL/kg. Watch out for this ingredient in your pet treats. It is easy to be mislead about animal nutrition when you are not well informed. It could be a sick dog or a dead dog. Don't take the chance.
Consider the following ingredients in Life's Abundance Treats.

Ingredients
Turkey, Turkey Liver, Pumpkin, Molasses, Vegetable Glycerin, Cranberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Inulin, Liquid Smoke, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative).
 Ingredients:
Oatmeal, Heat-Stabilized Rice Bran, Brown Rice Flour, Ground Flaxseed, Dates, Rolled Oats, Peanut Butter, Oat Flour, Flaxseed Oil, Apples, Honey, Rye Flour, Eggs, Cranberries, Carrots, Citric Acid, Brewers Dried Yeast, Natural Vanilla Flavor, a-Tocopherol Acetate (a source of Vitamin E), Lecithin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (a source of Vitamin C), Beta-Carotene.
 INGREDIENTS:
Oatmeal, Honey, Vegetable Oil, Brown Rice Flour, Peanut Butter, Flaxseed Meal, Dried Whey Product, Eggs, Dicalcium Phosphate, Parsley, Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus casei Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus faecium Fermentation Product, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (a source of Vitamin C).
 Ingredients:
Brown Rice Flour, Oat Flour, Rye Flour, Pumpkin, Oatmeal, Heat- Stabilized Rice Bran, Flaxseed Meal, Chicken Meal, Applesauce, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, Eggs, Apples, Yellow Field Peas, Green Split Peas, Honey, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Cranberries, Cinnamon, L-Carnitine, Ginger, Cloves, Allspice, Nutmeg.
Tasty Reward Nutritional Treats

Ingredients
Lamb, Chicken, Ground Brown Rice, Dried Chicory Root, Lecithin, Ground Pumpkin Seeds, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative), Vitamin B12 Supplement.
I don't know about you, but I think I rather go with the Life's Abundance treats. They are a heck of a whole lot more nutritious for your beloved dog companions.

The Bouvier des Flandres Dog Breed is Large, Rugged and Compact

The Bouvier des Flandres dogs were rugged working dogs back in the days of first appearance on farms in Flanders. The monks in Flanders were among the earliest known breeders. The French name of the breed means "Cow Herder of Flanders." Judging from his appearance in the photo below, I would hire him to do farm work. He looks as if no job is too tough for him to handle.

These dogs stand as high as 27.5 inches, they are heavy boned and have powerful muscles beneath a weatherproof coat. The Bouviers were taught to do anything that needs doing in a barnyard or pasture with the exception of milking the cows. They are more than farm equipment. They have a sterling character, a huge heart and keen intelligence. All these traits have endeared them to dog lovers all over the world.

On the French northern plain in Southwest Flanders, owners and farmers needed help churning butter and grist mill, hauling the products to market, driving the cattle and guarding the farm and stock. These job duties were those of the Bouvier des Flandres Dogs.

Today, it is important to socialize the Bouvier, enroll them into obedience training. A puppy kindergarten is also highly recommended. Positive reinforcement training is a good start.

The Bouvier dogs are highly protective by nature. They should make good guard dogs for a family. They are loving with children and make excellent family dogs, however, be aware the early puppy behavior can be too rough for small children. Crate training is essential, humane and safe. The crate will provide your Bouvier puppy a way he or she can be near you any time without getting into trouble. The crate will become his quiet nesting place as an adult. Give your Bouvier des Flandres dog a daily supplement. It is impossible for dogs to get all their vitamins, minerals and nutrients in nuggets of dog food. A formulator can only put a certain number of nutrients in each nugget. A daily supplement will enhance the nutrition of your Life's Abundance dog food choice.

Life's Abundance Skin and Coat Formula is a good daily choice to keep the skin and coat healthy.

Life's Abundance Skin and Coat Daily Supplement

  • Omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed & fish oil
  • A total of seven B vitamins
  • Vitamins E, C & zinc
  • Irresistibly tasty, chewable tablets

How would you rate your companion animal’s skin and coat health? Does your pet have …
  • Dry, flaky skin or a dull, brittle coat
  • Oily, foul smelling skin or a matted coat
  • Thin coat, excessive hair loss or red, blotchy skin
  • Excessive scratching (especially, seasonally)
Keeping your companion animal’s skin healthy and coat shiny can prove very challenging. There’s more to skin-and-coat health than regular shampooing and daily brushing.
Even though the skin is the body’s largest organ, it takes a backseat to other organs when it comes to nutrition. In fact, the nutrients eaten by your pet go directly to the other vital organs first (such as the brain, heart, lungs and liver); as a consequence, the skin often suffers. Even if you are already feeding your companion animal a high-quality, nutritionally dense food, sometimes it’s just not enough to ensure skin and coat health. In fact, problems relating to the skin and coat are much more common than you might think as they account for a significant percentage of trips to the vet.
Skin & Coat Formula Can Help!
A comprehensive nutritional supplement, Skin & Coat Formula for Dogs and Cats addresses skin and coat health in a holistic way. Unlike ordinary skin and coat supplements that contain fatty acids and a few other ingredients, this formula supplies a whole host of additional nutrients that work together to address the complex factors that play a role in supporting skin and coat health. The nutrients featured in this formula can yield several health-promoting benefits. Here are just some of the highlights of how this supplement works …
  • In addition to skin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids, this formula contains vitamin E and zinc, which help increase the effectiveness of the fatty acids.
  • The vitamin A in this formula helps cells to grow and supports the naturally-occurring layer of oil on the skin, helping to keep it healthy and supple.
  • This formula also contains vitamin C, which supports healthy collagen development.
  • And to top it off, our new and improved Skin & Coat now contains seven different B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, d-pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and biotin), all of which work with the other nutrients in this formula to aid in the many complex chemical reactions required for healthy skin and coat.
If your companion animal’s skin or coat is less than perfect, try a bottle of  Skin & Coat Formula with a comprehensive line-up of nutrients that work together to help support healthy skin and a shiny coat.

The Short-Tailed Boston Terrier Famous for a Tuxedo Coat

Boston Terriers are well balanced and compact dogs weighing no more than 25 pounds. They wag a little short tail and are most famous for their Tuxedo coat. They are white or black, brindle or seal. They have large, dark and round eyes giving the Boston Terrier a kind and intelligent expression that will melt your heart.

Boston Terrier male
The Boston Terrier is nicknamed the American gentleman among dogs because they have such a gentle disposition. This breed is an American creation resulting from a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier.

Most usually you can let a Boston Terrier out into the yard and they will stand near the door waiting first for their owners to join them (the gentleman disposition).

Exercise may depend upon your own activity level and living arrangements. They love to run and play and should be contained within a fenced area or on leash. The Boston will enjoy playing fetch, tossing flying discs and playing with large balls. If he is one that enjoys less activity, a daily walk may be enough exercise. The Boston will enjoy walks in the park where they can mix and mingle with other dogs and people. Many Bostons also enjoy mental stimulation from agility or obedience classes.

Keep in mind the Boston Terriers are more susceptible to overheating than many other breeds. Take care in sunny, hot or humid weather. Have plenty of fresh water available so he does not overheat. Learn what to do if your Boston does overheat. On the flip side of that, Bostons are also susceptible to extreme cold. A sweater or coat is a must in extreme cold temperatures.

The Boston Terrier do not have odor any different than other dog breeds, however, you might want to try Life's Abundance Bio deodorizer Spray:
