Shih Tzu: The Tibetan Lion Dog

The earliest “Lion Dog” in Tibet had long hair, were small in size and similar to the Maltese in type. As Tibet and China exchanged traditions and beliefs of culture and religion, the exchange of dogs became a two-way affair as well. The Chinese definitely interbred their small dogs, which were of many varieties, with the Tibetans with long hair, and the people of Tibet no doubt interbred their small dog with those from the Chinese people.

Shih-Tzu

The outcome of this interbreeding eventually became the Shih Tzu. The Chinese called the Shih Tzu “Tibetan Lion Dog.” The Apso was also involved with the interbreeding practices. The Tibetans called the Apso, “ApsoSeng Kyi” or “Apso Lion Dog.”

The Chinese tried to retain the characteristics they admired, which was the unnaturally short face and broad head, the wide barrel-like chest and the low-to-the-ground look.

The Tibetans, however, could not hold these same characteristics because of the climate and environment of their land. Tibet is an area of high altitudes. The very short face with restricted nasal development (which incidentally gives many Shih Tzu lovers a great pain to deal with at times) and the heavy body and short legs of the Chinese Shih Tzu would be at a disadvantage in these conditions. They could not breathe and survive in the high altitudes of Tibet. The Lhasa Apso could survive in Tibet. The Tibetans produced a dog slightly modified from the Chinese dog of a similar ancestry which was the Lhasa Apso.

The Tibetan Terrier (also involved in the exchanges between Tibet and China) is probably closes to the basic canine with a long head, compact and natural in conformation. Then comes the Apso, which begins to show the influence of some of the Chinese type. This influence resulted in a smaller dog, shorter on leg than the terrier relative, shorter nose than the terrier, and the teeth and jaw formation revealed a shortening of the face. The eyes are more frontally placed.

The eyes of the Shih Tzu have always been one of its most valued signature characteristics. I have never met a Shih Tzu that did not have a warm expression that radiated through its eyes. Some Shih Tzu has this characteristic greater than others. They are almost human-like.

When comparing the Shih Tzu to the Apso, one can see the most distinct Chinese characteristics. I have had Shih Tzu that look as if you are absolutely looking right at a Chinese in person. I am amazed at how the Chinese accomplished this. It truly was a work of art, as they did not breed according to pedigree as we do. They bred according to a picture of their minds of what they wanted the Shih Tzu to look like. Most of the time, their goal was to create the Shih Tzu to resemble what they thought a Lion should look like, and they apparently also, created Shih Tzu to resemble themselves in the face.

Smallness must have been fashionable and something of a status symbol in both the Apso and the Shih Tzu as well as the Pekingese. The Pekingese were also involved in the interbreedings to reduce size.

It should be noted here, however, that this article addresses the history and development of the Shih Tzu breed. The American Shih Tzu Club’s Code of Ethics clearly states it is against their rules, ethics, standards to breed our present day Shih Tzu with any other breed. It must be understood that this article is not an endorsement of any kind of practice that is against the rules and regulations of The American Shih Tzu Club or the American Kennel Club. This is an article regarding the history and development of our Shih Tzu.

The Shih Tzu and the Pekingese are Related According to Some Experts

In this article I share some facts about the relationship between the Shih Tzu and the Pekingese. I personally just love both breeds.

Shih-Tzu
Some westerner breeders challenge the assumption that the Shih Tzu from Tibet were on occasion interbred with the native Pekingese to reduce the Shih Tzu to a smaller size. However, there are those in China at the time who probably have a better position to know exactly what did happen. There are several statements made by different people who was actually in China at the time the Shih Tzu were crossed with the Pekingese.

Colonel Valentine Burkhardt for one points out that the Shih Tzu were most definitely crossed with the Pekingese. The Chinese did not breed by pedigree. They bred according to the image they had of the Lion Dog. Cross-breeding with the Pekingese was apparently done to reduce the size of the Shih Tzu. It is also felt the cross-breedings occurred to flatten the forehead, making it more lion-like in Chinese eyes.

There was a definite “Peke cross” in England in 1952 with the specific purpose of eliminating certain faults in the breed. The cross was done with the full knowledge of the British Kennel Club. This cross was made under the supervision of Miss E.M. Evans, a distinguished breeder of the Pekingese, who grew to love the Shih Tzu and felt a conviction that this step was necessary for the betterment of the breed in England.

In defense of her action, she explained that the Shih Tzu in her homeland of England were “too large, too high on leg, too long of muzzle with very bad pigmentation and too closely inbred.” Miss Evans bred a Shih Tzu bitch, Elfann Fenling of Yram, to a beautifully coated black and white Pekingese, Philadephus Suti T’Sun of Elfann, who had perfect pigment and large dark eyes. His only fault was straight legs.

The offspring of this out-cross were bred back to purebred Shih Tzu, one from each generation, and the successive breedings were fully recorded with the British Kennel Club in the crossbred register. This outcross proved to be quite successful in correcting the pigmentation and creating the shorter leg Shih Tzu.

During this time period the Shih Tzu were mostly terribly big, near 18 pounds in weight. The smallest one found by Mrs. Jungefeldt was black and white named Fu-Ling of Clystvale. He was low on legs, strong chest and weighed about 9 ½ pounds, and probably the smallest Shih Tzu in England at the time.

I cannot rave enough about the Life's Abundance grooming products. If you are looking for a long lasting fresh scent after you groom your dogs, try the Life's Abundance grooming products. Every dog grooming closet should have a superior ear cleaner. Life's Abundance ear cleaner is definitely a superior product you need to try. Regular weekly cleanings can help you stay out of the vet office for more costly vet remedies. Use all their products for a extra boost in the fresh scent they all produce for you. It is like a "layering effect" we humans get when we use the same scent with a shower or bath gel, then put on a same scent lotion and end it with the same scent perfume. We get that extra boost of the scent we love the most. You will just love the long lasting fresh scent effect using all these products together create.

If you are a groomer, try using all these products on your groom jobs and then recommending them to your customers for home use. Hand them a business card with your replicator site information so they can purchase these products in between your groom jobs. You will start to build an income above what you get paid for each groom job.

The Secret of the Chinese Imperial Palace: Shih Tzu

An explanation of why the first English Shih Tzu imports were “very large” is during the days of imperial rule eunuchs were in charge. Eunuchs tried to profit from all breeding processes. The oversized specimens produced were passed into the hands of the general public.
Shih-Tzu

Eunuchs fed glass to the small Imperial Shih Tzu just shortly before committing suicide themselves. This practice kept others from breeding their bloodlines of the smaller type Imperial Shih Tzu.

The Countess d’Anjou was a leading western authority on the Shih Tzu breed. She felt the first English Shih Tzu imports were too large. She agreed to a Peking Kennel Club standard of 10 to 15 pounds.

This was an agreement she later regretted. In a very famous letter the Countess wrote to Mrs. Widdrington, she states the Shih Tzu really should be under 12 pounds.

At one time in Peking they had two classes, up to 12 pounds and over 12 pounds judged separately. She went on to say in her letter to Mrs. Widdrington, “they never had the big ones in the Imperial Palace…” The Countess acquired her information from the Princess Der Ling who was a lady-in-waiting at court.

Princess Der Ling had a unique position to know exactly what the palace dogs were truly like. The Countess’ letter gave no explanation as to what happened to the larger Shih Tzu. Her letter did make it quite clear that only the small Shih Tzu were kept in the Imperial Palace. There was some measure of priority given to them at Peking Kennel Club Shows. The Countess’ wanted this arrangement to continue in Europe. Obviously this did not happen.Empress Dowager and the eunuchs did not want outsiders to have possession of the smaller size Shih Tzu.

Take a closer look at the history and development of the Shih Tzu since the fall of the Imperial Palace. The Pekingese cross after the fall of the Imperial Palace also accounts for the smaller size Shih Tzu. It is not true that “size” predicts health status. It is not true that all small size Shih Tzu are produced from excessive line-breeding and inbreeding of close relatives.

Shih Tzu Are Constant and Loving Companions

What sets the Shih Tzu apart from other breeds? The Shih Tzu is mysterious and charismatic. Its charm, self confidence and alert countenance is certainly very alluring. The Shih Tzu is highly intelligent. The Shih Tzu’s outgoing personality, big eyes with that warm and trusting expression is so hard to resist. Is a Shih Tzu going to be the right dog for you?

Shih-Tzu

First of all, the Shih Tzu want to be with their people more than anything else in their lives. They do not do well in lonely kennels or when left alone for long periods of time. They have been bred for centuries to be a quintessential companion, always at your side, always in your presence craving love and attention.

If you sit down, your Shih Tzu will want to immediately sit with you or an even better spot in the Shih Tzu’s mind, would be to jump into your lap and lavish you with kisses. Your Shih Tzu will want you to pet and snuggle him.

If you are eating, your Shih Tzu will either beg you for a bite or sit waiting patiently until you give him a bite. In essence, if you want a constant loving companion by your side at all times, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you.

If you have lots of time to stay home or are able to take your Shih Tzu along wherever you go, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you. By lots of time, I mean especially enough time to groom, socialize and exercise your Shih Tzu. The lifespan of a Shih Tzu is typically 11 to 15 years.

Shih Tzu are usually active, busy, curious and creative. You will need a variety of toys to help keep the Shih Tzu’s mind occupied. You will need a fenced-in yard or an area where you are able to walk your Shih Tzu for exercise.

Shih Tzu are very good nature d, but also very vivacious. Shih Tzu have a good sense of humor and would rather clown around than to be serious. Always keep in mind that Shih Tzu were bred to be ornamental or decorative pieces to have around, not for any particular work purpose. A Shih Tzu thinks just their presence is enough and anyone should be pleased to just be in their presence. They are proud and arrogant with a slight stubborn streak. A Shih Tzu has a mind of its own.

The Shih Tzu is a palace-dweller. For thousands of years the Shih Tzu had addresses in such places as imperial palaces, chez Dalai Lama, and with top political figures and dignitaries homes. It was a status symbol of wealth and dignity to own a Shih Tzu. To your small Shih Tzu companion, your safe and cozy home is its palace.

Give your Shih Tzu a comfortable place to sleep (and I might add, the Shih Tzu discovers quite quickly that “your pillow” is the most comfortable spot to sleep), excellent care, high quality food such as Life's Abundance and a loving family. Your Shih Tzu could not be happier. Although their stubborn streak may appear from time to time, the Shih Tzu can be trained quite successfully. Just use consistency and patience with your training lessons.

The Shih Tzu is strictly a house pet. Shih Tzu cannot tolerate harsh weather, either too cold or too hot, especially the heat. Shih Tzu need good ventilation, fresh air and a cool, protected area in warmer climates.

Shih Tzu require careful daily grooming. Most of the hair that is shed from a Shih Tzu’s coat will end up in the brush if you brush daily. They do very little shedding elsewhere. Shih Tzu are also less allergenic than most other breeds, which makes the Shih Tzu an ideal companion for adults or children who suffer from allergies and cannot house other types of pets.

Are you looking for a way to make extra money to help send your kids to a good college, or to take nicer vacations, to be able to stop stressing over long commutes to and from work and working 60 hours or more per week. Are you wishing for more quality time to spend with your family?

The Shih Tzu Dog Breed has had Many Nicknames

Several theories exist as to how the Shih Tzu was created. It has been reported that around the year 1650 the Dalai Lama visited China and brought along three “holy dogs” from Tibet. The Dalai Lama was believed to be a reincarnation of Buddha. Tibetan monks were devoted to breeding “holy dogs” to resemble their perception of lions. Based upon this theory, it is believed the three “holy dogs” were interbred with Pekingese to create shorter muzzles, broader heads, smaller dogs in general and is quite possibly the foundation of today’s Shih Tzu breed.

Shih-Tzu

Some people believe the Shih Tzu was created by crossing Lhasa Apsos with Pekingese. Another theory is that the Tibetan Spaniel was bred with the Pekingese to create predecessors of the Shih Tzu.

Others believe the Shih Tzu developed centuries ago in Tibet and reached China originally as a purebred. The answer to just how the Shih Tzu were created still eludes us today. Its origin is steeped in mysteries and legends. The Shih Tzu is generally the result of interbreeding original Tibetan “holy dogs” and various “lion dogs” in China. It is also generally accepted that the oldest and smallest of the “holy Dogs” are the ancestors of today’s Shih Tzu.

Through time the Shih Tzu has had many nicknames:

1.Lion Dog
2.Holy Dog
3.Fu Dog
4.Chrysanthemum-faced dog
5.Sleeve Dog
6.Under The Table Dog
7.Shih Tzu Kou
8.Lhasa Lion Dog
9.Lhasa Terrier
10.Tibetan Poodle
11.Shock Dog
12.Imperial Shih Tzu
13.Teacup Shih Tzu
14.Imperia/Teacup Shih Tzu
15.Standard Shih Tzu

After World War II, there were very few Shih Tzus in Europe. A few of the larger specimens reached the U.K. from China. Of these few larger size Shih Tzu, many had medical problems or died at an early age. The problems could have been caused by poor living conditions, insufficient food or food of low quality.Always feed a high quality food to your Shih Tzu. I recommend and have had good results with Life's Abundance.

Breeders began breeding as many of the remaining Shih Tzu as possible. They did not remove a Shih Tzu from the breeding program just because it wasn’t a perfect specimen of the breed, and at that time, who really knew what was a perfect specimen of the Shih Tzu anyway. The result of these breedings resulted in Shih Tzu much larger than was ever seen in the Chinese Imperial Palace during the days of the Empress Dowager. Eunuchs tried desperately to keep the very exquisite, small treasures of the Imperial Palace from reaching anyone outside the Palace. There were even instances where some Eunuchs fed the Shih Tzu glass just before releasing them to others outside the palace and then committed suicide themselves.

Despite all their efforts, however, Shih Tzu managed to survive. We are blessed today with these exquisite creatures, and regardless of what their nicknames have been or is now, the fact that we have Shih Tzu at all is quite a miracle.

What Exactly is a Shih Tzu?

The Shih Tzu has long been prized solely as a companion. The Shih Tzu’s temperament is of the utmost importance. It is the Shih Tzu’s unique head and expression that actually distinguishes the breed from two other related Oriental breeds, the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese.

Shih-Tzu

Shih Tzu are alert, arrogant, full of playful antics, and affectionate. Dog show judging is based on how closely each Shih Tzu entered approaches the ideal picture described in the breed standard.

Much of the Shih Tzu breed standard is devoted to the head. A correct head and expression should be round, warm and soft. The head of a correct Shih Tzu is large and round when viewed from the side. The ears look like they blend in with the head. The Shih Tzu’s topknot should be placed fairly low on the forehead in a double band to keep the hair from falling forward into the Shih Tzu’s eyes.

The eyes of a Shih Tzu should be round, large and dark. A small amount of eye white is acceptable. Excessive eye white in the corners of the eye or around the entire eye detract from the desired warm, sweet expression. Lack of good dark pigmentation on the nose, lips or eye rims also distracts from the desired warm, sweet expression. The eyes should be placed well apart.

The muzzle is short, square and unwrinkled. This is unlike the longer, narrower muzzle of the Lhasa Apso or the extremely short, wrinkled muzzle of the Pekingese. The jaw is undershot, which means the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The teeth should not show when the mouth is closed. The lower lip should not protrude when viewed from the side.

The Shih Tzu should move smoothly, flowingly and effortlessly. One common problem area in the Shih Tzu is poor fronts. Front and rear angulations should be in balance for smooth movement with a good front reach and a strong rear movement.

The Chinese said the Lion Dog should have dragon eyes, a lion head, a bear torso, a frog mouth, palm-leaf fan ears, a feather-duster tail and movement like a goldfish. Lion Dogs (Shih Tzu) appear not only in Chinese art, but also in the art of Tibet, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

The first imports of Shih Tzu to the United States came from England. These very early imports were noted to be “quite large.” In 1955, Shih Tzu were admitted by the AKC to the Miscellaneous Class (the breed is now in the Toy Group). At this time the Shih Tzu breed began to gain greater popularity. In 1998, 38,468 Shih Tzu were registered with the American Kennel Club, ranking the Shih Tzu eleventh of all registered breeds.

Famous owners of the Shih Tzu have been: Zsa Zsa Gabor, Yul Brynner, Elizabeth, Queen Consort of George VI.

Puppy Whelping Postpartum Care

Whelping a litter of  puppies can sometimes be physically and emotionally exhausting for both you and the  matron. Before you take your well deserved rest, be certain the matron and puppies are comfortable, each puppy has nursed well, the heat lamp is not too close, and the heating pad is not turned up too high. At this time it is crucial to maintain proper environmental temperatures. Newborn puppies are incapable of controlling their own body temperatures. Chilling to any degree leaves newborn puppies susceptible to infectious disease. Room temperature should be maintained at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit for at least their first few days.

Initially offer your dam only soft, messy-type foods and the wellness supplements from Life's Abundance. Use a high quality milk replacement added to her food. I like using Life's Abundance canned formulas with Just Born milk replacement powder sprinkled on top or mixed within.

Most  dams are ready for a good meal once whelping is over and the puppies are all settled in nursing well. However, do not worry if she refuses one or two feedings during her first 24 hours of motherhood. Do not expect her to leave her newborn puppies. If she is too exhausted to eat right after whelping, she will be ready by the next day most usually.

To prevent serious cleanup problems, place four interlocking layers of open newspaper on the floor over heavy plastic film such as that used by painters. Plastic sheeting covered by newspaper saves all flooring, is nonporous, makes any cleanup easy and is inexpensive to purchase.

Use Clorox bleach, ¾ cup to a gallon of water to disinfect the whelping box and immediate area. You will need to disinfect daily.

Two days following whelping, offer your matron soft food mixed with a high quality dog food. I use  Life’s Abundance and have found it to be the absolute best food and supplements.  Turkey and Shrimp with Broth is one good choice. Try them all to see which is your matron's favorite and give that one to her at this time.

Your dam should be seen by a veterinarian for a postpartum examination within 24 hours of whelping. It is not uncommon for a dam to retain one or more placentas, large amounts of blood and other body fluids in the uterus. It is also possible that she retained one or two puppies as well. All of these need to be expelled immediately. Retention will predispose the dam to infection. Many veterinarians will give the oxytocin shot within the first 24 hours of whelping to help her expel any retained fluids, placental material and/or puppies.
