Spooky Canine Superstitions

It does make sense that superstitions about dogs would crop up over time beings how we have spent so much time with them. Read more to learn about a few of the most unusual dog legends.

Legend or Superstition: A Howling Dog Brings Death
This is one of the most common dog superstitions that can be found in multiple cultures. In Greek mythology, a howling dog was thought to be a signal that the Wind God had summoned death to a nearby home. In Norse mythology, dogs howl at the approach of Freyja, the Goddess of Death. In Welsh lore, the king of Annwn patrolled the land riding supernatural  hounds that only other dogs could see. The howling was their way of acknowledging the presence of these spooky beasts as they raced by. Hint: Don't tell your kids these kind of bedtime stories!
Facts of Dog Howling:
Dogs howl as a form of communication. Have you ever heard the orchestra of dogs howling together? One dog begins to howl, and even dogs nearby will sometimes join into the songs of howling creating a grand orchestra of howling dogs.
Dogs also howl for attention. Perhaps the howling dog orchestra is one way all dogs collaborate with each other saying: We need more attention! Other times dogs howl as expressions of anxiety and sometimes a howl is just a very loud way of saying HELLOOOOOO. Since dogs are pack animals, one dog's howl can be heard many miles away thus creating the "howling orchestra." I tend to think they all just like to hear their voices howling together in happy tunes only they the dogs understand. They could be saying HELLOOOOO to each other.
Legend or Superstition: Dogs Can See Ghosts:
If you live with a dog you probably have experienced at least "once," when it is pitch black outside, you are home alone, and in the eerie silence, your dog suddenly starts to stare at a wall, or a door with no window and starts to growl. Your eyes widened and you gasp wondering what it is the dog senses that you don't hear or see. Did the dog see a ghost? Will the ghost suddenly appear to you as well or pass through the closed door into your presence?
Facts:
Dogs do perceive the world differently than we do, however, this is hardly proof dogs see supernatural beings or ghosts. Dogs enjoy a heightened and sensitive experience of their environment beyond our capabilities. This is demonstrated by dog whistles that pick up high frequencies we cannot register, but a dog can hear, as well as dogs have a smell 10,000 more times sensitive than humans can smell.
In addition, many people report dogs appearing agitated in moments before natural disasters and storms. The theory is dogs can pick up on sensitive vibrations we miss out on. These dog capabilities help trainers to train dogs to be alert to people about to have seizures and other human dangers. The dog's heightened sense of smell also helps solve many crimes.
Legend or Superstition: Seeing Three White Dogs Together Signals Good Luck

This legend comes from an English myth that says seeing three white dogs standing together is a sign of good fortune, particularly financial luck. There is an alternate version of this legend saying good luck will come to you if you spot a Dalmatian on the way to a business meeting.

4. Seeing Three White Dogs Together Signals Good Luck
Origin: An English myth contends that seeing three white dogs standing together is a sign of good fortune, particularly financial luck. An alternate version states the same good luck will come to you if you spot a Dalmatian (pun intended!) on the way to a business meeting.
Fact: No one is quite sure where this came from. Maybe because these dogs were rare, it was more of a unique find to see them wandering the streets! Just as possible is the simple associations people make between white being a symbol of good luck and black a symbol of bad luck, an unfortunate fallacy that results in many wonderful black cats and dogs having a more difficult time getting adopted.
It is my express opinion just having a dog in the house is good luck no matter what else is said about the matter. More and more research suggests people who own pets of any kind are usually healthier and live longer lives than people who do not own pets.
I am sure there are 100's of more dog related legends and superstitions. These are just a few for entertainment purposes.
