What Are The Most Important Things To Teach Your New Puppy?

Aren't puppies cute? A cute puppy always, always makes me smile. How do puppies learn? How can we teach our puppies the most important things for them to know to make their life with us and our life with them the best it can be?

Puppies learn vital skills through lots of appropriate socializing and positive training techniques. 

Socialize your new puppy to many different situations and he or she will learn life is full of fun and happiness, not fear and unhappiness. If you teach your new puppy nothing else, this one lesson is probably one of the most important. 

Take your puppy lots of places. Expose your puppy to different sights, sounds, surfaces, humans and other animals and be sure puppy is having a good time as you do so.

The primary socialization time period is from 3 to 4 weeks to 13 to 14 weeks. New puppies usually arrive in homes around 8 weeks of age. That means you as the owner has roughly around 4 to 5 weeks to get this first phase of training underway in puppy's new and permanent environment. Hopefully, the breeder has laid some good ground work for you already.

Take your puppy to safe places where you can control things. Avoid loud parties and crowded street fairs. Puppy classes are always a good thing along with small social gatherings, controlled groups of children, teens and elderly people. Find businesses that will allow you take puppy along. Of course, never leave puppy alone in the car. You want a business that allows your puppy inside with you.

Prevent separation anxiety. Avoid long periods of time such as over 10 hours at a time leaving your puppy alone.

Housetrain puppy in designated places and/or times.
